Judging by the last election there are plenty of morons. Hillary won the popular vote, remember?

Id say the morons are the ones who let Russian twitter trolls trick them into believing Hilary frequented some pedo dungeon in the basement of a pizza restaurant.

But either way, Im not saying were succeeding in having a well educated populace capable of critical thought. Just that its a lofty goal

For those of you whining about property taxes funding schools, consider this:

My city is home to less than 3000 full time residents, 30% of whom are considered poor.

The school district isnt funded at all by the state

Instead, there are thousands of 2nd home owners paying 2nd home level taxes that completely support the school system. Exactly 0 of those households have kids in the schools and none of those 2nd homes qualify for a homestead exemption.

As a result, the schools are funded at about $14K per pupil, while the rest of the state funded schools scrape by on $7-8K per pupil.

On top of that, casino money funds a scholarship program for every kid in the school system. $5K per year for each HS year attended and an extra $5K if you attended any middle or elementary school in the district.

I have 2 kids in the schools so, thats an automatic $50K in college tuition theyll have when the time comes.

Even having no kids I'm okay with contributing some, but a 25% increase across the board for a new middle school p!sses me off.

We pay a little over $6k per year in property taxes. MA has a law that indicates that your tax rate cannot go up by more than 2.5% each year. They also have to have their valuation audited every 5 years so that they can't value your home significantly more than it is worth.

So what towns do when they have a big purchase like a school is that they have to do an over-ride which allows the town to spend beyond that 2.5%. Typically, they get a bond to finance it, but your taxes go up to cover that extra cost. Going up by 25% sure seems like a lot, so hopefully they are not building the Taj Mahal for a school.

That sounds like good common sense there, these dips around here have no idea what that is.

Wow thats crazy. Did you up your exemptions or something? I claim none even though I could have like 3 or 4, just so I dont get hit with a huge bill. A couple grand is fine but 15...ouch!

No change in exemptions. The huge bill doesn’t bother me, but the penalty does. I intentionally haven’t upped the withholding amount because I saw no reason to give .gov an interest free loan, though this penalty changes my thought process.

I do my own taxes, so I do a comparison from last year to the current year and see if I missed anything. I would start there to see why, if all other factors are the same, you owed significantly more in taxes.

We owed about the same in taxes, earned and withheld the same amounts, too. From what I can tell, the only new thing is the penalty.

Okay so youve been short for a bunch of years and they dinged you because you hadnt upped your withholdings?

That makes sense. Odd timing with the big tax cut but I guess they want to get it while they can.

But 15,000? Jeez thats a hefty penalty. What were you generally owing in years prior?

You should learn about exemptions for state income taxes on your federal taxes before you go too far down this road. Already your yarn is not credible :(

I pay about 9500 in property and school taxes. You should do some research before running your mouth. It's not uncommon in places people actually want to live. But if you care to make a wager, I'm game.

No, the penalty was ~$150. We generally pay 10-15K on tax day. Maybe my fundamental understanding of taxes is off, but I thought they werent due until April 15. But I guess Im wrong :dunno:

Taxes are due during the year. They let some slide, but if you consistently owed $10-15k each year, then I am surprised it took this long for them to hit you up. Normally, they would force you to file quarterly estimates. If you have a one-time event that causes you to owe a bunch in April, then they let that slide, but if you are consistently not having enough withholdings, then they are usually much quicker to act.

Did you get hit with AMT? I get a boatload taken out and still owed over $3k due to AMT.

I had no clue that I'd get hit with AMT. Had calculated everything (or so I thought) and was going to get a few hundred $'s back. Nope, owed $4,600 due to AMT.

Hidden taxes make every day Tax Day

Income taxes make up less than half the tax most of us pay. We also must pay payroll tax, corporate tax, gift tax, gambling tax, federal unemployment tax, gas tax, cable and telecom taxes, plane ticket tax, FCC subscriber line charges, car documentation fees, liquor and cigarette taxes, etc.

But politicians are cowards. Instead of creating a tax, they magically create these little fees (so) they dont have to tell their voters they raised taxes.

Can they make you pay quarterly's? Your accountant will advise you to, to avoid penalties but I thought as long as you made more than the previous year you weren't subject to penalty.

I believe that they can't force you to make the quarterly payments, but they will hit you with a penalty. They will get their money one way or another.

I don't remember the safe harbor rule. I thought that you either had to have paid 90% of the current year tax liability or 110% of your prior year tax liability as of 12/31. Sorry, that probably doesn't help much.

is this something new? I have never paid a penalty for not withholding enough, as a matter a fact I refuse to give them as much money as a I can during the year, and I always claimed 9 all year to acheive that, then I would just cut a check for whatever I owe in April.

I thought along the same lines, but justed learned income tax is pay-as-you-go. Don’t think it’s a new concept.
