Djgb13 2,338 Posted August 19, 2017 Why? For me it's close. Plus it's in a city my wife and I love. So we will prob stay the night there, go out to eat at a nice restaurant, and go to a bar or two. Figured if it's this close and going to be in a place we love might as well go

Gepetto 982 Posted August 20, 2017 Kind of interesting how the moon is just big enough to completely block the sun, from our perspective. How'd that happen? Â The moon and the sun look to be about the same size from our view from Earth. Other planets with moon(s) and our Sun, and also other planets with different suns have different sized moon and sun when viewed from those planets. It's most likely coincidence that our sun and moon appear the same size.

kutulu 1,545 Posted August 20, 2017 The diameter of the Sun is about 400 times larger than the Moon's and it is also about 400 times farther away from Earth. These two facts cancel each other out, and the Sun usually winds up looking either the same size or just a little bigger than the moon to us. Also the Earth is flat. MTSkiBum 1,594 Posted August 21, 2017  Ah, nice, so if we were on other planets with moons we would experience the same thing? It has to work out that way mathematically?   http://www.popularmechanics.com/space/moon-mars/a27824/when-is-last-total-solar-eclipse/    A total solar eclipse is possible because the apparent diameter of the moon in the sky, given the right conditions, is larger than the apparent diameter of the sun, and all direct sunlight is blocked at certain points on the globe. Eventually, though—long after you and I have departed—the moon will no longer be large enough in the sky to block the light of the sun entirely.  Every year, the moon moves about 3.8 centimeters (1.5 inches) farther away from Earth. In addition, the sun is slowly growing larger as it fuses hydrogen into helium and consumes its nuclear fuel. The moon has been slowly slipping away from Earth ever since it formed billions of years ago, a time when the moon was closer and larger in the sky. Because it is getting farther away and smaller as viewed by us on Earth, and the sun is getting larger, there is an inevitable day when the moon will become too small in the sky to block the whole sun.  That day is about 600 million years in the future.  An answer to your question. Big Guy 1,400 Posted August 21, 2017 Kind of interesting how the moon is just big enough to completely block the sun, from our perspective. How'd that happen? Â It's a GOD thing........but most here don't believe that kind of stuff, so carry on.
Mookz 1,287 Posted August 21, 2017 Â Â http://www.popularmechanics.com/space/moon-mars/a27824/when-is-last-total-solar-eclipse/ Â Â Â Â An answer to your question. Â Cool, so eventually one of these times the moon will crash into the sun instead of eclipsing it. I'm going to wait for that one instead. Â Â It's a GOD thing........but most here don't believe that kind of stuff, so carry on. Â It sounded like that's what I was getting at, but I really didn't know if it was a unique thing. Â But yeah, at the very least I guess I can't completely blame the primitives for inventing the idea of God(s) with crap like that happening. Â If the moon were just some small golf ball passing through the sun, they probably would have been like "Eh, I guess that's kind of interesting", but then they'd get right back to hunting that Stegosaurus.
