How did you eventually talk to your kids about santa?

Recommended Posts

So my 7 year old daughter is starting to catch on about this whole santa thing. She has the elf on the shelf and kids already talking about how it's just parents moving it around which I've already had to lie about.

So im guessing this is the last year we can pull this all off. Which kind of breaks my heart that that portion of her child hood will be over.

Is there a smooth the way to do it? To finally break it to her? I mean she's eventually going to ask in a way that I'm not going to be able to to just lie out of it.

Does she have any other siblings? If so, younger or older?

My experience was that, while you can wax poetic about Santa being a symbol of the giving spirit in celebration of Jesus' birth blah blah blah... kids actually like being included into this little secret of adulthood. And you tell them that if they spoil it for their younger siblings, Santa won't bring them anything.

When my daughter found out, she actually helped set up the Santa gifts for her younger brother on Christmas Eve... She loved it... I think she was more sad when my son found out and she couldn't do it anymore...

Hah.. Yes she has 2 younger sisters.

I thought about that too about trying to explain that she's now a big girl who's in on The Secret or something like that..but I dunno.

My oldest still believed until he was like 13 years old. He just wasn't getting it. My youngest (11 at the time) said to us, "either you tell him or I will, but we aren't playing this game again this year". :o
