My 65 Merc fastback arrived today

Recommended Posts

It's a friggin gold mine, imo. Not only does it have the impossible to find side chrome, but it has some almost perfect NOS parts. I just washed it and it already looks 100 times better. I don't get it. You put it on craigslist after it's been sitting for 5 years and don't bother to wash it? It still has the original paint! The seats need redone, and it needs carpet, but the rest of the interior is pretty nice.

So now, I hafta decide which one to keep, or if I should sell both, or keep both. I think what I do is paint the convertible and offer them for sale as a package. See what kinda interest I get.

Oh yeah, it also comes with some extra side chrome, that unfortunately is not for 1965. Likely either 64 or 66. Still, really rare stuff that I can sell for some cizash.

Psyched.

Thanks. It would look a lot better with the American Racing rims I have on my convertible. Those aren't the original hubcaps even. Seen one that some guy put some wire wheels on it that looked really nice.

I just bought a cutoff wheel/grinder from harbor freight. I have a little trouble with wider wheels and tires, really tight on my car, had to roll one lip a little, and it's supposed to have chrome there. I think what I am gonna do with this hardtop, if I can't flip it real fast, is just cut out the entire lip there, and make it so you could put fatter rear wheels on it. Call it a "custom fiberglass" job instead of a rust repair.

And this time, I'm gonna get under the car and cut out the exhaust and do the undercairage BEFORE I take it to the exhaust shop. The car is so original, it has parts on it that my car had, that I didn't even know my car had. Explains the gap between the rear bumper and the body, there is supposed to be rubber moulding there. On this car there is still moulding, molding. Car came from WA, just like my convertible. In WAY better shape than when I got her though. Really tempted to keep it.

I learned something on one of these TV shows where they fix up old cars, you check how the doors work when you are buying them. If the doors open and close smoothly, and have a good sound, that's a really good sign. These sound great. Makes my convertible jealous. Also, are roll up instead of electric, and still work.

Just looking at the extra parts it came with, I think I have some trim pieces for a convertible Mustang or something. Car cost me $2k, i got $500 in extra parts I can't use, but I can sell. One piece is the interior stainless that covers the top inside of a convertible something. Very similar to the one in my convertible, but the mounting holes are in different places. My original is actually in pretty bad shape, been painted it was so pitted. I might be able to make this work ... that would be an amazing bonus. Whatever these are for, they are in excellent original condition.

Also, the Montclair has these chrome parts, like 8 or 9 of them that go across the rear trunk lid. Just like vertical lines of chrome. The originals on this car are still in good shape, but found in the trunk in an envelope labeled "65 Merc" a complete set of perfect NOS, rear decklid chrome for a 65 Montclair. Prolly worth, $150 or more, all by itself. It's like focking Christmas in April.

There are no repops of this stuff. It's OEM, NOS ... or SOL.

Also, interestingly, I didn't even think about it, but I'm sure my step-dad did, painted on the drivers side, above the Marauder emblem, is a black panther. I have been trying to sand it off, but that is kinda gangsta, OG shiat. Kinda makes my step-dad hafta be ok with it.

He said to me one time, about my car and my mess, "We are not white trash, ya know." to which I quickly responded, "Well that's easy for you to say." Plus, all our neighbors are Mexicans. Most of them have a non-running car on their property .... and that's just the way it is. Get over it. He can be a real pain. He can lecture you for a long time, without ever really making a point. Prolly why he was a good college art teacher ... but he knows. Times have changed. I gotta hustle to get by. Fortunately I am smart, and that makes it easier .... but I gotta be creative about how I make the salad.

If I was allowed to buy up all the cars I wanted in the 80's, I'd be rich now, and not hafta be asking for permision.

BTW, there's a good deal on Tucson craigslist, for a 64 Buick Wildcat. If that car is as described for $2900 obo ... steal. But I got 2 cars, and apparently I am not allowed to get a third. But ... parents are cool with this purchase. Mom says, sell the convertible, and keep this one. No brakes, blown head gasket ... lotta work to get this thing on the road.

Funny quote from my Mom a couple weeks ago:

"Why don't you just focus on poker, and get out of the car business."

And, I didn't have the proper response, I should have said, "Why do you have a business that sells African art and lost $25k last year?" or even better, "Because I love old cars." which, since I was a kid, she knows, I love old cars, I was in love with her 54 Mercedes 220 back in the day.

Poker ... it's a way I have found where I can supliment my income, and that's great, but it's not something I really want to pursue on a professional level. The people I know that play full time ... are mostly degenerate pricks. Always angry over something or another. Bitter, angry, fat, old men.

I don't want to end up like that. I want one big score, and retire.

My brother, even though he eventually came to the dark side and was racing a Mustang in the end, started much like my father, I remember when I was a kid, my parents had a Triumph, I think it was a TR4 ... Like 1972 model, mighta been the newest car we owned at the time. My Dad was a VW Mechanic and race car driver, before he went to Law School. Anyway, my brother wrecked that Triumph, and then he also had a Porsche 911 that was a disaster. Ruined all chances for my parents trusting me with anything cool, and I bought a 69 Mustang coupe with my own money when I was 15. $500. Just a few years ago I helped my Dad sell a Mercedes SL coupe ... 74 I think was the year, just a pile of garbage. Only thing worse, and hardeder to fix in America, would be a Jaguar.

I slowly converted my brother, first to Chevy and eventually to Ford. My Dad is all about his Prius now.

1. Since, unless I missed something, you have yet to sell a car, you are not "in the car business."

2. Poker "supplements your income?" You mean your food stamps?

Did I say i was in the "car business"? I sold my Jeep, made money. Sold the 67 Merc, too cheap but I had to move it.

And yeah, this year I have made more money playing poker, more than any other income for the past 5 years. Maybe longer, year isn't over yet.

I had an SL until it became a total nightmare to own... They weren't coupes, they were convertibles... Maybe in 74 it was different but from the 80's onward they were verts.

I forget the year, it was a convertible with a removable hardtop. Maybe 79?

Yep .... nightmare to own sounds about right. Lost money on that one, but had the joy of it being broken down in the garage for 3 years.

I just don't get the love for European cars.

ya, mine had a hardtop for the winter too which was nice. The EPA also made sure the wiring harness my year was biodegradable... So when it sucessfull degraded which I'm sure was just an enormous success for the green movement, my electrical system went to complete hell and became a never ending string of costly fixes. I got rid of it and bought a bulletproof japanese car...

V8, tight handling but extremely comfy and refined, in its heydey it was an incredible car. Put the top down and cruise somewhere.
