I have never tried it before. I think this is going to be the year I do it. After looking at my last 3 years picks at rb and where they finished I want to get better value from the spot I am using on the rb.

Ive never done it and dont plan to anytime soon. It can work but I prefer to just take who I think is the best player in the first few rounds. Sometimes I prefer WRs since I usually only do PPR and Ill start with 3 WRs but thats about as far as I go. I like to get at least 1 RB in the first 4 rounds.

Who are you planning on drafting in the later rounds to carry the load for you at RB ?

When others were doing zero RB over the last fews years I cleaned up in almost every league I played in by going heavy RB. Not winning every league but either winning or going deep in the playoffs each year in every league. I will continue going heavy RB even though the times are changing back seemingly.

Its your team you can do what ever you want with it. If you think this is the year to go zero rb then go for.

I personally had the best luck not necessarily with zero rb, but with drafting a more wr oriented team early.

With the resurgence of young RBs and the parity among WRs, I don't think this is the season to go this route

Would ageee, I think there are a lot of good talent later in the draft at the wr postion then rb.

I wouldnt go no rb early three rounds or so, but I do agree with Hawkeye about taking. The best available.

I think WRs postion is easier too fill later then Rbs.

Great question.

Thanks.

Hasn't been a good idea the last few years. Outside of the elite, of which there are few, teams employ a committee approach at WR. If more than one, maybe two teams have done zero RB in your lequge the last few years your league isn't very good. Zero RB was viable 2008-2014. It's time has passed.

While I was looking at the championship match ups posted from last year I remember the two things that were very prevalent and almost a requisite were stud RBs and a top 5 TE. I wouldn't be surprised if I had 3 RBs and a TE before I had a WR. Maybe even 4 RBs depending on how the draft falls.

that might actually be a good thing.

what I have noticed about the zero RB strategy is that it can work if you are the only one doing it.   But for each other person in your draft  running the same strategy your chances of winning drop fairly substantially.

granted I have a small number of drafts I have seen this.

I ran the 0 RB strategy when it first came on the Scene and nobody believed in it.  I won my draft.   the next year 3 people in that same draft utilized the strategy and they all crashed and burned.

ironically I was not one of them.  I was going to use the strategy a second time, but a top RB fell to me at the bottom of the first round and I abandoned the strategy (to a very good result)

in other drafts I've seen drafts where one guy used the strategy and it worked well enough where I'd consider it to be a viable strategy.

overall, my feeling is that the strategy can work if you are the only one using it in your league.  for me, that is the sweet spot.

it is worth noting that this strategy is not by itself a recipe for success.   You still need to draft well and I truly do not feel any strategy out there can make up for poor preparation and drafting.

so the fact you are zigging when the world is zagging might be a good thing.

if you see that nobody is taking RB's in round 1 you may wish to abandon the strategy and load up on RB's at that point.

Just my opinion.

if you did, you would be zigging when everyone is zagging

Good point. If you are the only guy running it it might work. Youre left with the top two WRs. You kinda have to land them or youre in trouble.

Id say you have to land Antonio Brown to even bother.

I did it last year. I was lucky and ended up with Kareem Hunt drafting the day before he was promoted/pumped as a starter, and I didn't really hit on the WR's that I took either.  I came out of last year basically with the theory to zig when others zag because at the end of the day any strategy will work if you hit the right players.  If I would've hit on the WR's then I would've dominated even more than I did with mediocre WR play.

Bingo.

my general policy is to not go into the draft with a specific strategy in mind.

The order of the picks rarely goes the way you think it will.  That's where mocks can be useful.   you can participate in a few mocks, and in the end, ask yourself...

how did things go down when lots of WR's went early?

how did things go down when lots of RB's went early?

how did things go down when lots of QB's went early? (if applicable.  this may not be realistic depending on your league rules)

then you can formulate general strategies for each scenario.

sometimes you will naturally fall into one of these scenarios early just based on who gets drafted ahead of you.

Zero RB gives you zero RB production 80% of the time. That's why you will find 7 or 8 of the first 10 picks being RB this year. People who did zero RB the last few years got hurt by it. That's what I saw anyway...

People finally learned not to grab QBs early, and now have learned not to go zero RB.

the problem with the zero RB strategy is it is a niche strategy.

if you have 2 or 3 people in a 10 or 12 team league running the strategy, they have close to a zero chance of success (in my opinion)

if you are the only one doing it, you have a chance, but you still need to nail your picks and grab undervalued running backs starting in round 3 or 4.

but if more than one person in a league run that strategy, it looks a lot tougher to get that job done.

because this was a hot strategy for a couple of years, there have been multiple people running it and having no success.

I definitely think this is a strategy to hold in your back pocket.

I would never go into a draft planning to use it.  but if you draft late in round 1 and everyone is taking RB's early, you never want to be picking position players at the end of a run, so if no RBs fall to you, an option is to take a WR in round 1 and again in round 2 on the flip because great WR's are available.

in that scenario, you fall into the strategy by picking what you feel are the better value picks.

at that point it helps to be aware of the zero RB strategy.  you can run with it or tweak it to fit your own needs and based on what is happening at the draft table.

but I'd suggest you should never go into a draft thinking this is the strategy this year, because it rarely works out the way you think.

Bottom line: there are scenarios at the draft table where this strategy can work.   but you watch what other teams are doing and adjust your strategy on the fly.

if a bunch of top WR's and/or QB go early, the zero RB strategy will backfire on you.  You need to be aware of this if trying to use this strategy.

I just ran through a couple of mock drafts on the fantasy pro's draft wizard and ended up with these teams (both picking out of the 9th slot)...

QB - Russell Wilson, SEA (5)
RB - Jerick McKinnon, SF (4)
RB - Kenyan Drake, MIA (6)
WR - Odell Beckham Jr., NYG (1)
WR - A.J. Green, CIN (2)
WR - Marquise Goodwin, SF (7)
TE - Rob Gronkowski, NE (3)
DST - Philadelphia Eagles, PHI (14)
K - Chris Boswell, PIT (15)
BN - Dion Lewis, TEN (8)
BN - Royce Freeman, DEN (9)
BN - Rishard Matthews, TEN (10)
BN - Theo Riddick, DET (11)
BN - Matt Breida, SF (12)
BN - Dede Westbrook, JAC (13)

=============================
QB - Russell Wilson, SEA (5)
RB - Alex Collins, BAL (4)
RB - Dion Lewis, TEN (6)
WR - Odell Beckham Jr., NYG (1)
WR - A.J. Green, CIN (2)
WR - Larry Fitzgerald, ARI (3)
TE - Jordan Reed, WAS (9)
DST - Houston Texans, HOU (14)
K - Dan Bailey, DAL (15)
BN - Jamison Crowder, WAS (7)
BN - Derrius Guice, WAS (8)
BN - Marlon Mack, IND (10)
BN - George Kittle, SF (11)
BN - James White, NE (12)
BN - Mohamed Sanu, ATL (13)

Are they possible?  Don't know.  I didn't check ADP's, but there you have it.  Zero RB through first 3 rounds.  This was a simulator though, not real people.

I feel like McKinnon is a cult classic this year. Most people think he's fine and worth a fairly early round pick, but there's always one person that has him rated way higher than others.
