What's the nicest/coolest/most famous golf course you've played?

Recommended Posts

Ed talking about his buddy playing St. Andrews got me interested in what sweet courses everyone around here has played since we have quite a few golfers that post here.

I guess my best is Black Bear Golf Club in Louisiana a few years back. It's been rated as the top public course in Louisiana quite a few times by a couple of magazines that I know of. We played it in the spring after Louisiana had been going through a pretty bad drought so it was pretty browned out sadly. Still an amazing track with a beautiful layout. Never seen so many bunkers in my life.

What's your most memorable course? Digby, we all know you're a member at Augusta, no need to chime in.

I have played a couple of TPC courses that host PGA events (Scottsdale, AZ and Norton, MA). I have played Innisbrook as well (nothing special). The best was East Lake in Atlanta. Super private. Great clubhouse and I played right before the US Amateur was hosted there and it was super tough.

Not a golf guy. My father is devout. Growing up, most vacations were close to excellent courses. I would play with him a little here and there. My brother enjoys it and is pretty good (member of the Olympic Club).

My favorites:

Kauai Lagoons

Kapalua

Mona kea

several around pebble/carmel

Torrey Pines

That's probably my favorite due to the location and the 18th hole. 600+ yds, all downhill and I managed a par.

I played Pinehurst by myself since I was there for biz. It was a great course but the experience is a little hollow when you don't have a friend to hang with.

Harbortown on hilton head

Fastest Greens I've ever played on. I knew I was in trouble when on the practice green my first putt was a six footer and it rolled 20 feet past. It was a flat putt.

Damn, that's a bucket list of a lifetime for most.... Cog Hill looks spectacular, doesn't hurt that TW won 5 times there either.

I still wanna add Pebble Beach, St Andrews and Augusta. Of course, the last one is nearly impossible for a guy like me.

No, but I'm also not on a first name basis with any of the 300 or so members who would have to invite me to play.

Prettiest: Princeville on Kauai. On the Rainer Fantasy Island side, not a blade of grass out of place (until I chunked it).

Hardest: Ponte Vedra (Verde?) near Jacksonville. I was with our golf team and we got bumped from TPC Sawgrass, coach got us in. I think it was new and private at the time (1989). We played the tips; my wooden 2 wood literally couldn't clear the water on a few holes.

Most memorable: New South Wales outside of Sydney. No caddies, classic old course.

No but I did get to play Augusta National with my BIL, his friend (who set it up) that is a manager for music singers and got a round thrown in on a deal he made, his friends dad, and a club member (who apparently I can't name or else we won't get another invite there). I can tell you now I didn't appreciate it as much as I should since I'm not an avid golfer. My nephew who is an avid golfer was dying to go but couldn't so my BIL took me. He has also played golf with Tiger Woods, another golfer on the PGA tour that I can't remember the name of, and Rickie Fowler. During the masters my nephew apparently got to ride with Rickie Fowler on his golf cart during it somehow. He's my nephews favorite golfer so he was pretty stoked

Next time you're down here let me know. I could prob set us up to play at the members course with my BIL and nephew. They love going and the members course is so much nicer than the guest one

Looking at the Myrtle courses, I'll add TPC Myrtle as a close second for hardest course I've played, also from tips.

With 5 players, did you guys use 3 carts or did one of you guys have to stand on the back?

Cool that your nephew got to ride with Ricky on the cart. What were those seating arrangements like? Ricky driving or passenger?

No carts. We walked all the holes but had Caddys. You weren't allowed to take a golf cart though they were willing to make an exception for my BIL cause of his cancer but he didn't want them to or else we might not get invited back. I felt bad for him cause I could tell he was in a lot of pain but it couldn't been a once in a lifetime opportunity so he played through the pain.

And Ricky drove. My nephew was in passenger seat. Apparently it wasn't at the masters. It was when they went to play golf with him. Sis posted it during the masters and I mistook it as him riding with him.

Black Bear? In Louisiana? Where? Are you thinking of Grand Bear in Mississippi? One of the casinos courses?
