Trade one of the most coveted position players on the market two weeks early for a return of three potential utility infielders, none of whom are in the top 100 prospects in baseball. Avila must have wanted his own "Fister trade".

Not sure how much better he could have done.

1) JD is a rental

2) Corner outfielders aren't in huge demand

3) Tigers aren't the only teams peddling (Andrew McCutcheon is just one of the other names I have heard)

I wish Texas would start the dumping frenzy here too.

Lucroy, Napoli, Gomez, Choo (if anyone would take him), Darvish, damn near the entire bullpen, Hamels - if's been real, but pack your shiit.

Yep. Add to this teams knew the Tigers had to dump him. they cant afford to resign him next year,. Bad position.

It was still seriously weak, even moreso with two weeks left until the deadline. I'm not expecting lightning to strike twice and the Tigers pull a Michael Fulmer for a corner outfield rental, but a few low upside utility infielders? How do you possibly reach the conclusion that you have to bite on that package with two weeks left to take offers?

I wouldn't say they are low upside, but they may be the best he could get. Maybe Pittsburgh was dangling McCutcheon, in addition to all the other reasons I stated above.

What might happen in the next two weeks that would make a deal get sweeter? Another team may have an injury I suppose, but I would counter with the fact that JD could get hurt himself.

I thought I read the one guy is AZs #2 prospect and #4 over all rated by MLB

Lugo? He's probably ranked decently in Arizona's farm system, but there's no way he's a top-5 prospect in baseball.

The Tigers also can potentially re-sign JD for next season,

not that they will, but its possible.

Yes but I guess the AZ farm system is dog crapola. Kinda like how Dumbrowski left the Tigers.

Who knows.....Maybe Avila will package one or more of these guys for something else? Like some bullpen help? :dunno:

This Lugo sounds like he may have a pretty decent upside.

Lugo was between 2nd and 4th in Arizona's system, which is near the bottom of the league.

they could, should and most likely are shopping Hellickson. Unfortunately he started off hot then had a real bad stretch but hes been better his last few starts. Any playoff contender looking for a cheap veteran that wont kill their farm system should look at Helli. I wouldn't mind one bit if my Rays brought him back. They need a 5th starter right now.

as for where prospects are "ranked" a lot of that is a bunch of garbage. MLB is littered with guys who were top 50 prospects who did nothing and guys who were outside the top 100 and had great careers.

Where was Judge ranked? Was he? I think I remember someone saying he was believed to be nada in the minors?

I did read a snippet that basically says trying to predict hitting skills for these prospects is a real crap shoot.

And Martinez hit his 5th homer as a DBack tonight in a 7-1 win vs. the Cards. Thanks Tigers!

Through six games and 18 at-bats, newly-acquired Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder J.D. Martinez appears to have settled in with his new team.

After a handful of fruitless at-bats that he later admitted were a result of pressing with his new team, Martinez hit a three-run home run for his first hit as a D-back on Monday. Since, he’s done more of the same.

He crushed two home runs for four more RBI two days later.

Then, Martinez broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals with a no-out, bases-loaded grand slam off pitcher Luke Weaver. The lead held as the D-backs won 4-0 to start their road series.

It was Martinez’s fourth career grand slam.

Following the grand slam, Martinez had recorded five hits, four of which were home runs, and 11 RBI in his first 18 at-bats with Arizona.

Martinez joined Arizona after being traded from the Detroit Tigers on July 19 but in his second at-bat was hit in the hand by a pitch. He returned as a pinch-hitter four days later before on Monday getting the monkey off his bat with the bomb against the Atlanta Braves.

For the season, he has 20 home runs and 50 RBI.

Is Kate Upton included?

Maybe. But considering she's from Michigan, it is a more natural fit for her with Justin being a Tiger.
