Do I want a car payment again?

Recommended Posts

My wife has always loved this car.... with her new job, a $300 payment a month wouldn't be bad.

Right now we have a 2013 Ford Explorer as the fam car. It's paid off and has around 80k miles on it. She's also using it as a commuter now. Not the best gas mileage.

I have a work vehicle so there's no commute worry for me.

Our second vehicle (can't use my work vehicle outside work at all) is a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country. Lots of miles @ 169k and it's off and on reliable, though I think the tryanny (can't join the military) is on it's last legs. Also the side sliding doors don't work, and neither does the AC. Needless to say it needs to go before something bad happens to it and I get $50 for it.

Thinking of going in today and trading it off on that Chrysler 300 above for the wife as a commuter. It gets 19-31 supposedly.... but she's always wanted one.

I just don't like trading off a paid for rig, for a new $300 car payment.

What you guys think?

You have three cars. I would sell the 05 T&C and not buy another car.

Like every geek, I hate the idea of a car payment. I also hate the idea of buying a Chrysler. But $300/month isn't that much, especially when you factor in the gas money saved.

This Chrysler Town & Country Touring we've had for 12 years, it's been really good. Cross country trips galore, zero problems, until yeah... it's got 170k miles.

Generally I'd say no but three hundo ain't bad

Yeah and the price on that is about 4k below book. Looks like it's a Caddilac dealer that's had it on the lot for 40+ days and want to move it. It's a 2013 and only got 29,000 miles. Should last her quite awhile.

You'll be lucky to get $1000 for the trade which means you're looking to shell out at least $3,000+ for a down payment to get your $300/mo.

I like those cars and even though its a Chrysler the ZF 8 speed tranny is very sweet

You could always buy it and tell one of your kids, Daddies got some good news. You don't have to learn latin this year!

Nice looking car. I think those are sharp. Have you thought of selling the van outright or is the $1000 a fair trade in?

You're most likely right.

That's a decent ride at a decent price if it serves your purposes.

I posted some of my recent vehicle transactions in the thread about Bunny's daughter's ride so I won't repeat it all here.

We bought a used 2012 T&C 3 years ago when it had only 19K miles on it. So far, it's been a great family van for those road trips etc you mentioned.

Will the Explorer serve as the road trip vehicle now?

I have never had a car payment and never will. Unless you have to have a car right away, save up or don't buy one. Interest is for suckers. MAYBE if it's 0% interest.

True geeks have so much money they can pay cash but they also don't care about interest. I will go without before I pay interest.

If the interest rate is very low you're basically paying thousands less for the vehicle over time.

my real answer is= wait until your next trip to europe and do a euro-delivery for either bmw, benz, or audi

edit: volvo and saab also have good savings. porsche does it, but they are the only one that makes you pay for the privilege.

2012 Chevy Cruze, which has had its share of troubles, but none engine wise. Wife drives a 2014 Buick Enclave. Car payment of 370. Great investment with 2 kids. Especially since there was a story about a family near my home town recently. Pregnant mom and 3 kids all die in a Subaru because a pickup ran a stop sign and tboned the car. Ran it off the road. If they were in something like an Enclave, everyone probably survives. Or at least maybe only the person closest to the collision dies

Bought a 2005 T&C last year, 142,000 miles, $800. That $750 isn't too bad.

Good stuff bro.. gives the wife a little perspective.

Need to keep the car 2013 or newer to get 2.79% from the credit union.

That 3rd link is probably the best, it is essentially a nissan altima with all of the features.

I will never buy a European car again. Way too expensive to fix.

They're nice, but you can get other luxury brands that are much more economical. Infiniti, Acura, Lexus, etc.
