Have been wondering this for a long while.

 

This whole taking pictures of everything nonsense. I think we can agree that women make up about 90% of that, no?

 

F****** ingenious to include a camera in cell phones. I want to punch that guy in the face so badly.

 

Here's my question. Do you think there will come a point when people will get sick of that crap? I mean, they've added filters to make taking pictures more fun but at a certain point there's got to be some diminishing returns. Womens vanity finally has to max out at some point doesn't it?

 

Okay, we get it, there's five thousand pictures of you out there. Enough already. The same thing with your kid your dog what you ate for dinner etcetera.

 

Maybe it's more about hopeful thing, but it just seems like this stuff has to be burning itself out, right?

In fairness, the technology isn't there yet. We need further miniaturisation. If you think about chipping a dog, they still need to be taken to a vet and scanned. Because it's simply a barcode. GPS receivers need batteries and other Hardware that are much bigger than just the under the skin dermal chip.

 

But, no damn reason why we can't GPS planes. You know where we dont? Pilots union. No kidding.

The worst part of the selfie craze is that everyone filters their pictures so much that they all look like they have the porcelain skin of a seven year old. No one has laugh lines or forehead wrinkles. Then you see them in real life and it looks like they've aged 30 years overnight. I have so many 40-45 year-old Facebook friends who post picture after picture of themselves filtered to look 21.

I was a big part of that thinking in the past. And I still am to a certain degree - because there isn't much I can do about it. However, let me disabuse you on two and half fronts:

1) Access to 'benign' data

2) Implicit criminality

 

Let me walk you thru (an abbreviated) 'real world' example:

 

A bad guy (BG) can use the say, Disney Channel database to know the approximate age range and gender of children in a certain region. He can further narrow that search via many methods / databases.

 

He can also determine not only what your wife buys,(who cares?) but when she goes to the grocery store, or gym, or massage, etc. - Because everything has a 'membership' card now.

 

He can also tell when and where you typically hang out at a bar, golf club, gym, etc.

 

He can also come up with a plausible reason to BE at your house when you guys aren't (but your kid is).

Kid: "Oh, Mom did say something about upgrading the cable...."

 

Now, a lot of what I just listed used to require authorized LEO's going through a specific warrant process - showing reasonable cause. That information is now collected passively and/or volunteered actively. For example, cop used to have to call your plate in to 'run' it. Now, EVERY plate on every side of the cop car is read passively and simultaneously and run automatically.

 

Congress just passed legislation that let things like Grocery, Disney, etc data be sold to anyone with a bank account. You don't even need to 'hack' data anymore. Just whip out your cc.

 

As far as access? It'd be great to think that only a few hundred - or even thousand - fully vetted LEO's going through a strict process can have this data. - That's why I brought up the bondsman.

 

Took her maybe two weeks - while working full time as a bartender - to get her license - and have access to virtually everything the FBI and local LEO has at their immediate fingertips. It was focking scary.

 

In this case, you didn't have to be a criminal. You could be Captain America. But now, for what? 100 bucks, some sleaze or some ill-intended ex, perverted neighbor, coworker, etc. can get all of the above - and a LOT more - from some sketchy individual - or get it himself online. Now imagine what they can do by simply hacking a single low security (Alexa) device that controls ovens, lights, alarms, locks etc.

 

It can drive you crazy if you think too much about it. And, most people put more thought into the Kardashians, Dancing with the Scars or their FF league than shiit like that. I guess it's more a natural defense mechanism more than anything.

 

Hollywood's got nothing on reality in this case.

I think it's a dumb idea, but there's no need to wax poetic about losing liberty. I don't think even ed is suggesting anything mandatory. I presume it would be up to the parents. Making decisions about your kids is a big part of that job description.

I'm in agreement, kids should be chipped. Cell phones get lost or stolen, it makes sense to take every precaution to not lose your kid. They can get it removed when they are 18 or start paying rent. But if it's a wandering toddler, a 7yr old hell bent on getting himself killed or lost, or a teenager driving MY car, you damn better believe I have a right to know where they are at all times.
