Roughing the passer

Recommended Posts

Matthews RtP.

This shite has got to stop. Defensive players basically can not tackle the QB now. Everything and every way you can tackle them is a penalty.

It was a 100% clean hit/tackle.

This penalty is hurting the product on the field.

And I'm talking about the whole league, not this particular play/player.

This is the "Aaron Rodgers rule" in effect. Are QB's made of glass now? Or do they play football? "Landed on him with most, or all, of his weight"? Weak. All because Rodgers broke his collarbone last year.

Dude Barr actually drove him. Clays last 2 hits were not late nor driving. If anything trying to not drive. Sick of that argument.

Sure I guess it is the Rodgers rule. But he was actually driven to the ground snd it wasnt a flag. Now they are just throwing a flag anytime a QB hits the ground. It is pukeworthy. I cant watch this game.

Barr may have driven him to the ground, but much like Calvin Johnson affecting "what is a catch" rules, that's the play that overall started these bogus Roughing the Passer penalties.

The NFL doesn't want their golden child hurt again.

Then call it when they are driven into the ground.

Have you seen thr new clay roughing? He sacked the QB. If you csnt do that you are not allowed to sack a guy. Literally.

Thr Barr play I wouldnt have called anything either. But he actually drove him into the ground. Clay is form tackling going easy on QBs and it is still some how roughing.

I cant watch this game anymore. Its about the NBA now. It is that bad.

Horrible call. I don't watch as much a I used to. Still watch a lot, but it's definetly less. I've missed whole prime time games last year and this year. Unheard of a few years ago.

I agree with you. These particular ones are all BS.

Another BS one in the Dallas/Seattle game. 100% perfectly executed tackle.

Can't argue there. What's the guy supposed to do when the QB is falling back? Horrible

Hey - this is what the league has become. Im also watching less. Every game Ive watched this year has had some BS roughing call or some illegal hit call that were completely fine and well within what you'd expect to see in a football game. Its focking awful. If the goal is to prevent all injury then simply fold the league and let the players all get desk jobs selling insurance. No injuries other than maybe carpal tunnel.

Who started this crap? Goodell, wasnt it? He should go kill himself.

Protecting the players from brutal hits makes sense. But I have no idea how the defense is suppose to tackle a qb when running full speed towards him if some of these calls are going to be called the way they are.

Haven’t watched a game since 2010 or 11 I can’t recall when he gave up tv.

But I agree with you the game isn’t nearly as entertaining as it once was.

Flags will be next.

Football is still pretty fun. The folks in charge are pretty easy to slag, but that doesnt make the NFL a special entity on this current earth.

At worst, the experience of fandom has become bloated. There is so much non-game content during the week. And theres a mountain of commercials during the single-game viewing experience. Add in all of the fantasy and betting, and football can be hard to get away from. And everyone who can read a box score thinks they are an analyst. It leads to a mountain of horrible content all over the place. I deeply respect the folks online and on tv who try to provide good content: fftoday, footballguys, Harris, Footballers, several others.

And I agree with the big dogs who point to bad offensive line play as a big culprit. Mix that with some overtly bad qb play and there are some teams that ARE tough to watch. It guarantees that good QBs are going to continue to make big money. Of course, a few sneaky bums are going to get paid too!

What can the nfl do to fix these compounding issues?

They can start by not pushing the fans away with his hitting the QB bs

The one Wilson got was a bad call. I agree. It was just a clean hit, in time tackle.

The one that Prescott got was 100 X's even worse though.

He was pushed. Then he did a basketball type flop, and they called it. F0cking terrible.

Admittedly, I did not see the Prescott one...I quickly lost interest in that game, and my wife had me doing some tasks.

Oh man, if you can find that play someplace, check it out. I think it's the worst one so far this year.

This keeps up, the league is gonna look really stupid. Not by us fans, but by the casual observers out there.

I found it. That was terrible. And I blame the refs, but it isn't really their fault...they are just following orders of the League Offices.

I agree with most of the above. I also believe the rule is not being enforced properly particularly the terms unecessarily and strive in the below rules.

Taken from section 2 of roughing the passer rule:

When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down or land on top of him with all or most of the defenders weight. Instead, the defensive player must strive to wrap up the passer with the defensive players arms and not land on the passer with all or most of his body weight.

This x1000. Touchdown! Commercial break. Extra point! Commercial break. Guys drinking water! Commercial break. Kickoff! Commercial break. Flag on the kickoff they are still sorting out! Commercial break.

Here you go--in 3-3.5 hours of a 'football game', according to 2013 stats, there were over 100 commercials. And eleven minutes of time when the ball was in play. So if the cameras are rolling (not at commercial) for the whole time the game clock is running, then we're looking at 49 minutes of booth announcer/sideline announcer garble. And 2-2.5 hours of commercial watching. (a bit of slush time when the game clock isn't running but we're not at commercial--add that to the booth/sideline garble time)

What surprises me is that I put up with it for that long. I watch a game a week, maybe. This week I won't be able to catch any of it (travel/work). Not really caring.

So when people get irritated (say by players kneeling, or in my case being irritated by owners and other fans being irritated by the kneeling), it's not hard for people to walk away. Gee, what else will I do with 3 hours in order to get those exciting 11 minutes of time back?

Just look at the skyrocketing contracts these QBs are getting. $33.5 million annual average for Aaron Rodgers. And each QB who signs a new deal raises the bar higher. With those numbers, QBs are just too valuable now to the franchises, who are not going to allow their prized assets to be driven into the dirt by 260 lb cement heads. Like it or not, that's business.

Business that will not continue. They need to do their best to keep fans wanting to come back each week. Kids are not going to have the same care for the sport when they can find so many other ways to entertain themselves

So, there was a DE for the Dolphins that tore his ACL trying to flail off and not land on the QB. There are rules for safety, then there is dumb. This is dumb. Beef up the padding on the QB. Let guys hit him. It's football!!!!

If a guy is getting crunched by a 300 lb man and his collar bone broke, what did the padding do to protect against that??? NOTHING.

I'm not disagreeing with everything you wrote. But this here just doesn't follow. That a guy gets a break one time doesn't mean the padding didn't protect him ten other times. It just means the padding isn't perfect.

Here's a link I put in another post about this:

It appears there are already repercussions of linemen trying not to fall on the QB during a sack..

https://www.thephinsider.com/miami-dolphins-injuries/2018/9/24/17896446/william-hayes-acl-out-for-year-injured-reserve-miami-dolphins-derek-carr-sack-oakland-raiders

"The Miami Dolphins have lost defensive end William Hayes for the season with an ACL injury, according to head coach Adam Gase. Hayes was injured during the team’s 28-20 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. He sacked quarterback Derek Carr early in the second quarter, with his knee appearing to buckle slightly just as the two players were heading to the ground and the defensive lineman tried to adjust himself to avoid landing with his full body weight on the quarterback. Hayes immediately reached toward his leg, then crawled in pain through the endzone before trainers came out to get him."

has anyone seen the video ciruclating on fb today? where the girl is in her aaron rodgers jersey and her bf mock sacks her...he walks up next to her and picks her up as if hes going to carry her ....lays her down gently and then pulls out a pillow and puts it under her head.....it made me laugh

Khalil Mack came out and said that he doesn't necessarily focus on hitting the body of the QB anymore, but rather he just goes for the football. So far it has worked for him. 3 forced fumbles by him alone. That's more than 12 teams as a whole have this year.

Might want to check your link for that. It say about 1/3 of the game, about an hour, is commercials.

Which is about normal for TV today. 18-20 minutes of commercials for an hour long show. It's just more jarring in game because there's an assload of 30-60 second breaks rather than five 3-4 minute breaks.

Thats one thing soccer has on football. 2 45 minute commercial free halves. Couple commercials at half. Too bad the actual game is almost as boring as baseball.
