Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh is urging people to stay away from Boston Common tomorrow during the so-called “Free Speech Rally” as Walsh and other officials promised to deploy hundreds of police and security cameras in an effort to keep the peace a week after a Charlottesville, Va., rally turned deadly.
“The courts have made it abundantly clear, they have the right to gather no matter how repugnant their views are, but they don’t have the right to create unsafe conditions,” Walsh told reporters during a press conference this morning inside City Hall. “We are going to respect their rights to free speech, and in turn they must respect our city.”
Walsh, citing advice City Hall received this week from the watchdog Southern Poverty Law Center -- who recommend against giving hate groups a bigger platform with confrontations -- recommended people steer clear of the Common during the rally, which is permitted to take place from noon to 2 p.m.
“Hf anything gets out of hand, we will shut it down,” he said.
The event spurred fears after news broke that organizers originally had invited some of the far-right speakers who also had attended the deadly white nationalist rally in Virginia last weekend. They now claim no Charlottesville speakers are slated to address the Boston crowd.
The permit granted by the city Wednesday comes with severe restrictions, including a ban on backpacks, sticks and anything that could be used as a weapon.
“I do not want them here,” Walsh reiterated this morning, pointing to comments made by some of the billed speakers targeting the Jewish or African-American communities. “If I could have not had them...I would not have given them a permit.”
Approximately 500 Boston police officers will be deployed around the Common tomorrow, Walsh said, with more standing by if needed.
Police Commissioner William B. Evans said there would be no riot police at the outset of the event, but added, “they will be close by, ready to roll out and take the line if we need to.”
Gov. Charlie Baker said an additional 200 state police will be available.
“Make no mistake, the state will support the city's efforts to make sure public safety is preserved during tomorrow's events,” the governor said, “no matter how big or small, or where they re located.”
Evans said extensive planning has gone into the police response for tomorrow’s rally and security cameras have already been deployed in and around the bandstand on the Common.
“I want anyone who comes to know we will have eyes and ears all over the place,” Evans said. “Believe me, we are not going to let anything happen tomorrow. If we have to end the rally, we will.”
A counter-protest march is also planned for tomorrow, and Evans said officers on foot and on bikes will be used to help keep them safe. Estimates as to how many people are expected to attend the rally and counter-protest have varied greatly, ranging from a few hundred to well into the thousands.
As with other recent gatherings, barriers will be placed at certain points to prevent cars from driving into crowded areas, as the killer did in Charlottesville, and as attackers did yesterday in Barcelona, leaving 14 dead,
The area of Tremont Street around the Common will be closed tomorrow beginning around 10:30 a.m., Evans said, and towing could begin around 6 a.m. All MBTA stations normally operating on Saturdays will be open tomorrow, MBTA Police Chief Kenneth Green said.
Green said MBTA police will have additional officers posted at the stations around the Common tomorrow, and there will also be T officers dedicated to monitoring security cameras and gauging the movements of the crowd.
Evans said he has been in touch with the FBI and said there are no known threats to tomorrow’s rally. He chastised the media for hyping up the gathering, pointing to other large-scale events such as the women’s march and various championship parades in the city that have taken place safely.
“You're making this seem like a battle, you've ratcheted it up,” he said, addressing reporters and saying officers will keep counter-protestors away from the rally attendees. “The frenzy over the past six days, this is like a showdown, but it’s not going to be like that.”

Big Alt-right rally set for tomorrow in Boston at the Boston common.

Look for the liberals to show up and cause an issue. Good way to get it shut down.

Free speech? no on the liberals watch

Lefties show up to righty rallies and start violence... The righties get blamed.

Who do you suppose would get blamed if violence starts at a lefty rally?

They're protesting that the country wants more than just straight white people in it.

Woohoo. Trump's America. Nazi rallies all around the country tomorrow.

They've been happening for a long time. And they've never had much attention paid other than as an object lesson on how expansive the first amendment is.

At least not until dumbasses on the left decided they had the right to violently confront them.

They're rallying with chants and signs and carrying torches. Looks like a protest. Just wondering what the problem is. Their guy is the POTUS and he has a super majority.

This is an important point. Lost on the Newbies of the world.

The fringe racist KKK have been holding little marches and whatnot every year for decades. What used to happen is everyone ignored them, or there maybe would be a few people "counter-protesting" by holding up some snarky signs, then it was over, no violence......everyone just laughed at the racist trailer trash.

But now you have these militant groups....Antifa, BLM, etc. who show up with weapons ready for a melee. Then come the news cameras....all pouring gasoline on what was a little, iddy biddy fire that nobody cared about and that didn't effect anyone's life.

Now we have a dadgum forest fire on our hands.

Everybody is all worried about statues.....I didn't even know they were there.....nobody hardly did. I really think people look, search for things to get upset about.

KSB wins the internet for the 2nd time this week.

Last I knew "free speech" was still okay in America?

Why does the left hate free speech?

I don't agree for one second what they have to say, but I am 100% behind their right to say it

Who, the KKK?

Hell if I know, hell if I care. Let them have their first amendment rights to assemble and "march" or "rally" or "protest". It's a protected right. I think they are vile idiots, but who cares? Let them speak, they only make themselves look dumber for doing so. It's like when Newbie posts, no one would ever know what dumbass he can be if he was muted.

They will no longer be ignored now that we have a president that promotes them. Those days are over thanks to Donnie Boy

Two different groups. The last group was pissed off racists. This group is content to be left alone and have a peaceful rally.

Hopefully they get the opportunity.

It's not a peaceful protest if they are using torches, wearing helmets, and carrying clubs. They are threatening and intimidating. If black guys were walking through the streets that way, they'd be detained. Whether they're actually committing violence yet or not.

Refusal to criticize a hate group is promotion/approval. Don't be such a retard. We have a President who is fine with KKK, Nazis, and White Supremacists. In 2017.

I predict this weekend is going to be a bloodbath. If you think people are going to sit back and let these hateful focks run through the streets of this country without opposition and with Presidential support, you are nuts.

No he doesn't specifically support hate groups, stop putting words in his mouth. He supports your right to organize peacefully. You on the other support violence if you don't agree with what the opposition says. Your last two sentences make that very clear.

There were the Trumps this past week. The one who was scared of focking up so he waited till after even his brain dead wife gave her comments and then made is 'On many sides. On many sides' speech. Then came the Trump who caved in to pressure and read a scripted speech denouncing the KKK. Then finally, the real Trump who actually equated Nazi white supremacists with a group protesting hatred and racism. Leaders of his own party are embarrassed by him.

In Newbie's world, not wanting the president assassinated means you are a white supremacist.

This is the kind of person you people spend all day arguing with. Truly the biggest piece of sh!t our society has to offer.
