New Offensive Coordinators effect on their new teams

Recommended Posts

11 new OC's this year. What's your take?

Norv Turner (Vikings)- "The Norv Turner Effect" Bottom line? The guy has had an overwhelmingly positive effect on just about every offense he's been connected with.

Gary Kubiak (Ravens)- The Ravens hired Gary Kubiak this offseason to man their offensive coordinator position. A former Denver Broncos backup quarterback and coach, he is one of the founders of the famous zone-blocking rush attack that Mike Shanahan made famous in the late 90s. The Houston Texans hired Kubiak to be their head coach in 2006 and he brought that same scheme to Texas. It is no accident, then, that he is now a member of the Ravens’ coaching staff, who implemented a zone scheme last year under the tutelage of Juan Castillo.

In a zone scheme, you need to have athletic blockers who are flexible and able to move their feet well. You also need to have a running back that is decisive and can plant his foot and hit a hole that hasn’t opened yet. These are two other positions – offensive line and running back – where the Ravens will look to improve this offseason, with Kubiak surely looking to install the right pieces in place to get his system going. Pitta and Rice should have good years!

Kyle Shanahan (Browns)- Shanahan, who learned a run-heavy West Coast offense under his dad, helped create what his Mike dubbed the "East Coast Offense” in 2012 that led Washington to its first NFC East championship in 13 years. Incorporating the pistol formation, Shanahan's offense became the first in NFL history to pass for 3,400 yards and rush for 2,700 yards in the same season. In four of his six seasons in charge, Shanahan's offenses finished in the top 10.

Hue Jackson (Bengals)- he'll bring a better balance to the offense than Jay Gruden did. Look for Giovani Bernard to improve his numbers in his Sophomore year.

Jeff Tedford (Bucs)- Tedford’s task is to take his pro-style offense, which has elements of the spread offense, to the NFL. Tedford’s offense has been called “voluminous,” “complicated,” “intricate” and “complex.” His offense is definitely quarterback-driven and requires the QB to do a lot of reads and checks at the line of scrimmage. Tedford also puts an awful lot of time into preparing the quarterback for any possible situation that may happen on game days. Can Mike Glennon handle this????

Bill Lazor (Dolphins)- Lazor's has to elevate an offense that has been struggling for nearly a decade, one that desperately needs the development or discovery of an upper echelon quarterback. And he'll apparently do so with a take no prisoners approach. Lazor wants his unit to hurry to the line of scrimmage, his quarterback to process the field quickly, and then throw the ball on time. And most importantly, he needs everyone to practice at game speed every single day, keeping their foot on the gas to make the pace become second nature. I think Lazor FAILS to elevate the Dolphins due to the lack of a good QB!!

Jason Michael (Titans)- Michael has collected eight years of NFL coaching experience with the NY Jets, Oakland Raiders, SF 49ers and SD Chargers after leading Western Kentucky to the 2002 NCAA I-AA (now FCS) championship as a star quarterback. Although Michael will direct daily meetings and oversee the offense, this is still Whisenhunt's scheme and will be calling the plays

Frank Reich (Chargers)- One concern about Reich is experience. He has never served as an offensive coordinator in the NFL and has not called plays in his eight years as a coach in the league. So you wonder if Mike McCoy (HC) would go back to calling plays like he did in Denver as Reich learns on the job.

Ben McAdoo (Giants)- He spent his last eight seasons as an assistant under Mike McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers. So now, McAdoo will try and brings the Packers offense to NY which is heavy on screens, draws and pulling linemen. Will it work?

Sean McVay (Redskins)- From TE’s coach to OC and is only 27 years old. Yikes!!! So what does this mean???....Nothing, Jay Gruden has already been asked, and he indeed will be calling the plays, so McVay’s primary task should be to mostly help formulate the game plan and run meetings when Gruden is unavailable. So you will be looking at a pass happy offense!!

Joe Lombardi (Lions)- New Lions new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi isn't just bringing a famous last name to Detroit, he’ll also will bring the New Orleans offensive playbook. The best part is, the Lions have the personnel to run the playbook!!

forgot linehan in DAL. while garrett's concepts will still be incorporated, reports from OTAs are that linehan's concepts are very evident in terms of mismatch creation and route packages. there is good reason to believe that his use of megatron will strongly influence how he employs dez. and while he's a renowned passing guy, he stated that he has never had a back like murray. in addition, he uses backs extensively in the passing game.

it's tough to predict, but bears watching.

Really happy for this one, although we'll see how long it takes Detroit to fully implement the new offense.

Really this is the best thread right now, great stuff by the OP.

This is a major place where value is born, along with rookies and players coming off injuries or down years.

The key ones I see (IMO):

  • OC Tedford in TB
  • OC Shanny Jr. in Cleveland (Turner gone)
  • OC McAdoo in NYG (ie Gilbride leaves)
  • Caldwell HC, Lombardi OC in DET (Linehan gone)
  • Whiz HC in TEN (Loggains gone)
  • OC Turner in MIN
  • OC Lazor in MIA (ie Sherman leaves)
  • Gruden in WAS; McVay (former TEs coach) OC
  • OC Hue Jackson in CIN
  • Chudzinski Special Asst. in IND
  • Linehan passing game coordinator in DAL
  • OC Kubiak in BAL
  • HC O'Brien in HOU

Hoping that Kubiak can step in and find some success, already missing Caldwell who was pretty great; not that it is hard to be better than Cam Cameron, who is just pathetic

This is a major place where value is born, along with rookies and players coming off injuries or down years.

The key ones I see (IMO):

  • OC Tedford in TB --- Runs a VERY complex scheme. Neither QB in Tampa can run it, in my opinion. Doesn't bode well for the offense.
  • OC Shanny Jr. in Cleveland (Turner gone) ---- Great for the run game, but he has a tendency to think he has more talent than he truly has.
  • OC McAdoo in NYG (ie Gilbride leaves) ----- I LOVE this guy. Quick drops and a true west coast offense. Cruz is being MASSIVELY underrated.
  • Caldwell HC, Lombardi OC in DET (Linehan gone) --- So many weapons and a creative mind. They will score a lot this season. Spread the wealth type of offense.
  • Whiz HC in TEN (Loggains gone) - Has been good when he's had a good QB. He will make the WR's much better. Considering they will be playing from behind a lot, I am targeting some of the offensive guys.
  • OC Turner in MIN - Love all things MN on offense.
  • OC Lazor in MIA (ie Sherman leaves) - Wallace will improve big time. Watch him go in the slot 25% of the time.
  • Gruden in WAS; McVay (former TEs coach) OC - He will pass as much as anyone in the league. Calls odd plays at odd times though (think playoffs last year.....)
  • OC Hue Jackson in CIN ---- I like Hue. He believes in running to set up the deep ball. While AJ's stock is falling, it's a nice time to nab him.
  • Chudzinski Special Asst. in IND -- Don't see him making a difference
  • Linehan passing game coordinator in DAL --- Love the Dallas guys, including Murray, Williams and Romo. Obviously Dez too.
  • OC Kubiak in BAL - Great for the running game. Who will the big WR be though? Smith (both) are what they are.
  • HC O'Brien in HOU - LOVE his offense. Involves his RB's in the passing game and spreads the ball to eliminate one guy being covered too often.

My opinions of these folks are behind your comments. I base a LOT of my rankings on Coordinators. Last season I posted about Trestman, and took some crap for it. You can definitely gain an advantage in the draft if you know your Coordinators.

The 'Turner Effect' and the 'Kubiak Effect' will probably be built in to ADP by draft day.

Jeff Tedford's Cal teams really deteriorated his last few years at Cal. Can he make the adjustment back to the pro level w. success? This is a question mark. Other than having the gift of Aaron Rodgers he did not have much success at the collegiate level w. QBS.
