Kevin Harvick loses automatic championship berth and 40 points

Kevin Harvick is no longer locked into a NASCAR Cup Series playoff spot, as his race-winning car from Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway was found to have illegal alterations to the rear spoiler.

NASCAR slammed the Stewart-Haas Racing team with penalties, including not allowing Harvick to use the win for the automatic berth to be among the four drivers who will vie for the championship Nov. 18 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Harvick was docked 40 points, crew chief Rodney Childers and car chief Robert Smith were each suspended for the last two races of the season, and Childers was fined $75,000.

"It is not our desire to issue any penalties but will do so when necessary to ensure each race and championship is contested on a level playing field," NASCAR senior vice president of competition Scott Miller said.

The penalty leaves Harvick clinging to the final playoff spot available on points, as he sits three points ahead of Kurt Busch and 17 ahead of Chase Elliott going into the elimination race Sunday at ISM Raceway in Phoenix.

:shocking:

Well Harvick didn't win, but he needs to give Hamlin a Xmas card after he took out his two biggest threats in one crash.

Final Four:

Harvick

Logano

Busch

Truex

It would be great to see Truex win again, but I'm picking Kyle to get the championship.

Nothing to bust him on now. He got the penalty last week and still qualified for the championship race in Miami. If he doesn't win next week, then you can bust on him.

Eh, I don't know anything about this stuff, just that guys name. I will commence with the ball busting.

No underdogs got in, all heavy hitters.

All drivers will be in the top 5 at the start of the final segment.

Truex will blow a pit stop in the final 30-40 laps leaving it between Harvick, Logano and Busch.

Truex realizing he is out of it, does his best to make sure Logano can't win it either.

Busch and Harvick slug it out the final 25 laps. Busch will burn his tires up trying to keep Harvick at bay, Harvick slips by in the final 10 to win the entire thing.

What do you think Mike?

Love that part. Busch could do something crazy, but it won't be using up his tires, he's sneaky good at saving them. It should come down to Busch/Harvick, they have been head and shoulders ahead of everyone else this year.

Still it would be awesome if the Truex team who can't get enough sponsorship dollars were to win it...at least for a couple of days people would be talking about Nascar business model not working for the overall good of the sport.

Man I love the quirky tracks like Phoenix, racing is so much better than at all those 1.5's.

Between the two I'd rather see Harvick win than Busch. I can't stand Kyle Busch whatsoever. I like his brother though.

I love Phoenix too, ever since the redesign it has been one of my favorites. Would love to see a new track built with a layout similar to Homestead but turns 1/2 are 5-10 degrees of banking and 3/4 are 25-30 degrees of banking.

Would also love to see Iowa get a Cup date.

Once Canadian Motor Speedway is done they need to get that added to the schedule as well.
