Bigger keeper: Ronnie Brown or Steve Smith

Alright so this is my first post on the FFToday Fourms. I've read many and it seems the collective FF knowledge here is unsurpassed.

 

Anyways, I'm in a 12-person keeper league where you must keep 1 but have the option to keep a second. For each player you keep, you lose the draft pick one less than their previous years pick. I've already chosen my main keeper (Shawn Alexander), but I'm having a tough time deciding on the second keeper. I have Steve Smith who was drafted in the 4th round last year and Ronnie Brown who was drafted in the 8th round. This means I'd lose either my 3rd round or 7th round pick depending on which I keep.

 

Our league has a fairly standard point setup (1 pt for every 10 yrds running, EDIT: 1 pt for every 10 yards receiving, 6 points per touchdown, etc). Also, my draft position this year is 10th (in a snake draft) since I came in third last season.

 

I've read magazines and most rank S.Smith as either the #1 or #2 WR pick while the ratings for Ronnie Brown range between 6 and 12 among the top RBs.

 

Any and all help is appreciated.

you have to keep Ronnie brown, you can get good wrs later

Are you sure you get 1 point for 25 yards receiving? Usually you get 1 point for 25 yards passing and 1 point for 10 yards receiving. If this is true I would keep Smith, but I am not one of those guys that beleive that RB's rule the game. Either one would be a good pick. If you do get 1 point for 25 yards receiving, there is no question...Ronnie Brown. If you get points per reception...Steve Smith.

I appreciate both the reponses. I'll double check the rules.. you may be correct on the passing vs. receiving.

 

Edit: n8dogg was right... it's 1 point per 10 yards receiving.

Welcome to the board for starters. Be warned though: it's addictive!

 

With that said, here's how I see it. In almost every ranking system I've seen, Ronnie Brown comes out ranked higher than Steve Smith. Yes, Smith's generally the top WR, but Brown is a stud in the making. I have him ranked 6th or 7th. So, if it were a simple matter of which I'd rather have, it's Brown. But on top of that, with Brown, you only lose your 7th round pick as opposed to a 3rd round pick with Smith. To me it's a no-brainer in Brown's favor, although it sucks giving up Smith.

Thanks, Aggie. I'm definitely leaning more toward Brown at the moment with the hope that I can pick up Smith at 2.15. Although if a higher ranked RB is still available i'd certinatly consider that pick up for depth/tradability. I'm sure most of you have much more experience than I but it seems a starting RB is almost always worth more than even a star WR trade wise. Ah well... I've got until Aug 22nd to decide, so I've got plenty of time to worry about the decision

I think keeping Brown is a no-brainer. To put any scoring aside, if your league members can just keep 2 players max, there are going to be quality RBs available when keepers are declared and all draft in the serpentine format. If you lose Smith, he may be available when you draft at #10. I would analyze which RBs will be left and see how this compares to draft positioning. Most owners would take a RB in the 1st round, so a quality #1 WR (Smith or others) should be there at pick #10. In this case I would much rather have a 3rd round pick as opposed to an 8th round pick.

A stud RB should be much more valuable to you than a stud WR.

Keep Brown.

 

You are giving up a much lower draft pick.

 

And you will be set at RB for a long time in a full keeper league.
