Do I need a new router?

Recommended Posts

The wifi in my house isn't great. The biggest problem is watching sling on my tv. Sometimes there is a lot of buffering and freezing. On the far side of the house from the router, the Internet connection is weak. I have an old router. I don't think it is dual band and it is a g (as opposed to n or ac)

That sounds like I need a new wireless router, right?

Here is the one I am thinking of getting.

I have: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-ac5300-tri-band-wireless-ac-gigabit-router-black/5008900.p?skuId=5008900&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=0baf08b7-6aaf-45d4-b556-743f3d84ac23&ksprof_id=401&ksaffcode=pg196342&ksdevice=c&lsft=ref:212,loc:2&gclid=COyzgr6JzNECFYs7gQodNvgP6g

I know it is steep in price $300+, but you literally won't need another router for a decade. Thing is a beast, I love it. You will literally never complain about your connection speed ever again.

I recently upgraded my crappy old router because my new tv had streaming issues. I bought a "TP-link Archer C 9" for $120 based on a Toms Hardware article which considered it the best of the mid-range routers. Good enough for me. Works great.

This actually looks pretty cool. Wi-fi in the master bedroom upstairs is a little spotty. This might help with that. Thx for posting it. Do you have this setup?

Yes. im my living room under the TV

I did extensive research (as I always do) when it comes to electronics

Plug in, follow the CD, piece o cake

it screams. works really well.

Do you have the two piece kit? If so, do they work well together? Reviews seem positive.

Does the one I linked look good enough for a single floor 1800 sq ft house? And does it sound like the router is the problem?

The one I am looking at is $129 at Walmart and might be similar (AC1900).

Looks very similar. Should probably be fine

If you keep the old one, does that mean you will post less? If so, I recommend the status quo.

My house is a little over 2000 sf 2-story plus a basement. The router is on the main floor by the TV and we there is literally no place in the house where we can't get wifi. It works great for us.

I used the same set up at my old store/warehouse that was 3500 SF on one level with a block wall separating the shop from the showroom. Worked perfectly there too.

Cable internet. I don't remember what speed.

you should look that up. and then maybe do a speed test connected wired directly to cable modem. most likely a newer wireless router will help...but wont do sh;t if your internet speed is sh;t to begin with.

Get this

It is 50 bucks, I use it and it reaches all the way to my garage with no problem. I have had 0 problems with mine and I have 200 mbps service and the router still does not limit the internet speed.

You probably just need a 25$ extender, but go ahead and spend 200$ on a new router.

I thought about that but the tv is the biggest problem and it is close enough to the router that I would be surprised if that is the problem.

if you're TV is near the router, plug the focker in.

I have my PS4, computer for the TV and TV all plugged into the router.

wifi is for phone, tablet and laptop

At a minimum put the TV on the 5g signal. 2.4g is prone to interference from other devices.

It's not in the same room, just not so far away that a router shouldn't be able to reach it. I think.

I think my current router has only the 2.4.

Are there any routers that DON'T crap out after a year or two? I swear...

I've had the same Linksys WRT54GS router in my office for probably upwards of 10 years. Maybe longer.
