Racism in action on this side...

Recommended Posts

So there is a flap lately.

WeChat is the dominant messenger app here. It is a messenger, a social media account, you can pay for things with it, blah blah.

One nice feature is that it translates for you. So if someone sends a message in Chinese, you can quickly translate it in English. This has enabled me to get laid many times.

Unfortunately the translations are often bad.

The other day, it came to attention that 非洲人 (feizhouren) which literally translates as africa person, was being translated as, yep, you guessed it, nagger.

The company has promised to fix it ASAP.

Chinese are some of the most racist people I have ever met

It tends to be racism in a hilariously ignorant childish sort of way. Not like American racism at all. Theyve never even met anyone not Chinese, so its more theoretical than actual hatred.

One thing we struggle with here is that the fiancée is Filipina. She speaks perfect English. Has a teaching degree, unlike me. Has more experience than I do. And is a far more hardworking non complaining employee than me.

But because she is not only Asian, but a saltwater Mexican (most Filipinas here are maids or nannys) it is very hard to get her a good job.

They insist on native speakers. And then turn around and hire Russians, Ukrainians, poles and Serbs that can barely speak English.

I was teaching a lesson with a Serbian chick once. She was supposed to be teaching them food words. She wrote ten vegetables on the board.

Misspelled 8 of 10. colleyflour was my personal favorite.

None of the college students in the class called her out. Later a few asked me. I corrected her discreetly.

yah all I know is from the casino here in the states, they hate other Asians, especially Filipinos the most

They usually hate Japanese the most.

I had my students write a story once. We had been studying natural disasters. The story ended, "A tsunami killed ten thousand Japanese people, and I was happy, because I don't like Japanese people."

The chinese teacher in the room laughed, and said, "It's true, we don't like Japanese."

I was kinda like... "ok, moving on."

Japs to the Chiners are like Hitler to the Euros. What the Japs did to China around WW2 was atrocious, and history has failed to even discuss it

Yah they hate them, Filipinos to them, its not really hate, just more like a second class race

I watched many videos of African Americans trying to get work teaching American English in Asian countries (Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam) and being passed over for Australians or other "American" looking people with non-American accents. They just don't associate black people with being American even though blacks were here in America before many white people. They just don't understand the history. This problem happens to Asian Americans as well. In the end, everyone finds work eventually, it's just a little harder.

True. And it's not the Australians at all to get bent out of shape about. Growing up speaking the language, their English is as good as anyone black or white. Although teaching American English.... in that case. Schools and parents would rather non-native speaking Europeans than black Americans. If they're really good, they can be about the same as an American but schools will settle for much less, like TBBOM's Serbian colleague, ahead of a black American.

Black Americans aren't getting any help from black Africans either. I've met people with heavy African accents say they're from Toronto, Kentucky, or New York. Now these Africans' English is often good seeing as most come from countries that have schools in English but the heavy accent is hard.

Often times the boss of the school or whoever is hiring in English knows what's going on. They can hear the American or British sound as opposed to the Russian or Serbian or African or whatever, they may not recognize but they know. Parents can't make that discernment and don't know and just want the white face. The schools in turn, in a largely racist society anyway, they're not interested in racial equality or being colorblind and fair, they likely don't know, maybe don't care. They'll make the parents happy. Which means hiring the Serbian lady rather than the black American or TBBOM's fiance.

Yep. My bosses have me doing management crap lately. Theyve been sending me to other schools to evaluate the others.

Like my ass has any business evaluating anyone.

Anyway, I go this school the other day, and dude is from Ghana. He holds a British passport as well, so he was able to slip through as a native speaker.

Even I was barely able to understand the guy. It was funny to hear all the Chinese kids speaking English with a half Chinese half African accent though.

You can tell where the kids teacher is from though. They pick up American, British, Canadian, or Australian accents and idiom.

It's weird how I feel conflicted sometimes. I've watched videos of Africans in Russia pretending to be black Americans. It makes me mad. I know the difference, but people outside the United States can't tell. Like if someone from Scotland pretended to be from England I doubt I'd be able to tell.

Like, 80% of the time I can tell a black American from a black Caribbean from an African from a black Latino. To everyone else we're all just black I suppose.

They cant. I sometimes respond in French and pretend I cant speak English when some annoying Chinese person stops by and wants to make friends, practice English.

I speak it well enough to function. I can perform most transactions on a daily basis and was once a fair hand at picking up girls with it.

I live in a much bigger city now with many many foreigners, so we are not as big a deal here. I still get a little bit of attention, but not like it was. Its also much easier to undertand people here, as they speak proper mandarin instead of the gutter backwoods dialect from before.

Ive stopped studying Chinese now though. I know enough to function, and have no desire to know more. They arent worth talking to anyway. Ive been studying Filipino lately, since I hope to live there someday and my fiancées mom doesnt speak English.

Do I like china? Its ok. There are good things and annoying as hell things. For my purposes, its better than living in the states (low cost of living, good pay, easy access to travel destinations.)

I rarely go out anymore. We are saving for a trip to Tanzania for our month long winter break, and also paying for the wedding, so Im trying to not p!ss money away more than needed.

I hope to find us jobs somewhere else next year. Just for a change. But I doubt it will happen. The only place that pays as well is the Middle East, and Im not to keen on that. Her not being native speaker makes it hard as well.

They know what they see from television. AA also have a measure of blame on themselves. When someone speaks proper English they're ridiculed by members of their own race for being a sellout.

It is dead easy to spot Americans from other people. White, black, Asian, doesnt matter.

We dress differently. We walk differently. We carry ourselves differently.

I could sit in a busy international airport all day and spot the Americans.

You know, a friend of mine who lives in Germany said the same exact thing! He said we walk differently. How so?

You guys just don't bother to look at black people.

Not always, but I think it can tell if someone is Jewish or Italian or Eastern European.

I group Koreans with Japanese but can separate them from Thai and Filipino.

We (and to a slightly lesser extent the other westerners) walk like we are actually going somewhere and have a focking clue how to get there and recognize that time is a factor. Asians and Africans and Arabs and whatnot walk like they are just wandering aimlessly for no reason.

We carry ourselves with confidence. We hold our heads up. We make eye contact and smile. Other cutlures tend to shrink from any notice.

The flip side of that is that we are often obnoxious. If you see a white person abroad acting like a jackass, its 75% an American, 20% Aussie. The Brits and Canadians are more reserved.

When the airline announces a delay, the white people are pissed, Americans the most so. The other cultures dont even blink an eye.

Bottom line, we expect things to work and expect respect. The others expect things to be sh!tty and treated like sh!t.

Ive been working on this with my fiancée. The whole, if you take sh!t, it never ends. If you tell people to jump, they usually ask how high.

This (with the exception of black Latino) I can do, and I think probably most non-black Americans can.

I pat myself on the back too quickly on that one. I realize that I was basing my abilities to pinpoint people on more than just their looks. I usually have a hint by their accent and name. So, I will revise and say that I can sometimes tell...

Great analysis.

I need help with the red bold. Your wife is lucky. I am awed at you guys because you are able to command respect where I am always asking and being gentle with my voice, rarely demanding anything.

Feel free to post the tips you give your wife here. I'll use them.

(but I suppose I'm nowhere near as gentle as an Asian foreigner)

Its a fine line. I on occasion go too far the other way.

Shes so meek it was hard at first to get her to tell me what she wanted. Vacations. Where to eat. Anything. She would just go along with whatever I said.

Eventually I just stopped suggesting things. Made her decide. That didnt really work well, so we went to multiple choice. Id pick several things, shed choose one.

With her work, she is still a little too willing to be treated badly. Of course, its easy for me to say not to take sh!t. I dont have to. I can find another job tomorrow at the same pay. She faces difficulty I dont.

Omg....in fact, your wife needs to give me advice!

In a relationship I express my views, probably too much.

That is a skill I never learned; submissive partner.

I'm not loud and aggressive, but I'm not quiet and whatever he says goes.

Le sigh....men like that sh1t. <_<

....then again, maybe to her you're a real catch. Women stfu with the right guy, lol.

Its like anything else in a relationship. Just requires figuring out how to communicate.

Honestly, when I was dating Chinese girls, I didnt like the submissive thing much. They take it way too far. No personality of their own. And it becomes a game. They pretend not to care about stuff. Then they get pouty when you guess wrong. Gets boring and annoying real quick.

When I was a young man, I said I didnt want a doormat or an accessory. I wanted a partner. Someone who will discuss things and defend their position with conviction. Get in my face when Im focking up. Etc. I have determined that if that exists, it is unicorn rare.

With my first wife, she chose to weigh in very obliquely. Then she could throw every mistake in my face as an I told you so, and claim credit when things worked out.

This one is the most genuinely sweet person Ive ever met. Nothing much bothers her. She doesnt let little things upset her much. Very even keel. I try to get her to speak up for herself, because I know what happens otherwise. I run roughshod and do what I want, she eventually resents it and we have an unsolvable problem. I had front row seats to that show with my parents before the divorce.

Anyway. You live you learn, you try to do things better than you did. Thats the idea anyway.

Bottom line, we expect things to work and expect respect.

We also give respect more than any other culture. We respect people we don't even know, we respect other's cultures, religions. A major point in teaching our children is teaching them to respect others. With that, fear of others is lessened and confidence is strengthened.
