More fear-mongering: Trump pullout from climate pact means even hotter world

Recommended Posts

https://phys.org/news/2017-11-trump-pullout-climate-pact-hotter.html

US President Donald Trump's pullout from the Paris Agreement will push up global temperatures nearly half a degree Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100, according to a report released Wednesday at UN climate talks in Bonn.

If all countriesincluding the United Stateshonour carbon-cutting pledges under the 196-nation treaty, the world would see 2.8 C of global warming above pre-industrial levels, the Climate Action Tracker (CAT) research group had previously calculated.

That is not nearly good enough to avoid climate catastrophe, scientists say.

The Paris pact, adopted in 2015, calls for capping the rise at "well below" 2 C, and even 1.5 C if possible, to avoid climate-addled future of extreme drought, deadly heatwaves and superstorms made more destructive by rising seas.

But if the US abandons its goals for reducing greenhouse gases, set under the Barack Obama administration, the end-of-century thermometer will climb even further to 3.2 C, the report showed.

"This is largely due to the fact that the United States is walking away from its 2030 target, and long-term 2050 goals," CAT said in a statement.

In 2015, the United States made a voluntary commitment to cut the country's emissions 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. Last year, it also laid out a "mid-century strategy" that would see it's emissions slashed 80 percent compared to a 2005 benchmark.

China, India 'stepping up'

The annual analysis of the world's top 32 carbon pollutersaccounting for more than 80 percent of global emissionsalso showed that China and India have accelerated the transition toward greener economies.

"China's emissions growth has slowed dramatically: in the first decade of this century, its emissions grew by 110 percent, but between 2010 and 2015 growth slowed to only 16 percent," the report said.

Beijing is on track to fulfil it Paris pledgea peak in CO2 emissions by 2030a full decade ahead of schedule.

At the same time, CAT rates China's efforts as "highly insufficient," saying its targets are "ripe for an update."

After stagnating for three years, global CO2 emissions will rise two percent in 2017, dashing hopes they had peaked, scientists reported earlier this week.

A surge of coal, oil and natural gas consumption in China was the single largest cause of the increase, they said.

India has also stepped up its climate action, the CAT researchers said. Projected emissions in 2030 are about 20 percent less now than they were only a year ago, they reported.

"It is clear who the leaders are here: in the face of US inaction, China and India are stepping up," said Bill Hare, a scientist at Climate Analytics, a non-profit research organisation in Berlin.

lol Science, if we do all of this and all of that and donate trillions of dollars to science, we can reduce that number by 0.05%

truly the Paris agreement was nothing but ways for the US to funnel $$$ to foreign countries

.9 degrees by year 2100?

Where should I send my money to stop this tragedy? Oh, I don't have to send my money? The Government will take it automatically and save me the trouble.

I can't wait to see how many carbon credits I can get per dollar!

I’m as logical and scientific as they come and even I can see the global warming thing is just a racket and scheme to suck fear money from clueless people. Oh no, In 100 years the temp might raise by a quarter of a fraction of a degree unless we give all our money to Al Gore or whatever! The climate changes naturally and always has. Are we polluting and destroying the planet? Yea sure, but that doesn’t mean every hot day is global warming and then every cold day is...also...global warming? It’s fear mongering for profit and no one can prove or disprove anything so there’s no resolution.

90% correct.

When it's hot it's global warming. When it's cold, it's climate change

This hurricane season particularly showed how blind everyone is to this. We had a couple hurricanes....and the conversation was GLOBAL WARMING--because we had these hurricanes(which we actually have a season for, so not so unusual)!! But if we have a hard winter, or a big snow, well you can't use ONE example to disprove global warming...

It's a level of hypocritical you rarely see.

SCIENCE! What does this have to do with science.

The Paris agreement allows China to increase their carbon emissions until 2030. The United States has to cut emissions between 26 and 28 percent compared with 2005 levels by 2025.

As of 2015 Chinas CO2 emissions were more than twice the emissions of the USA. China is by far the number 1 contributor.

I would assume population plays a role, and we have 1/5 as many people... not to mention, we outsourced much of our emissions to them. How much of the crap being emitted by. By Chinese factories is to make crap for the us market?

Im all for reducing emissions, and getting off fossil fuels. I do believe the climate is changing, and it will have catastrophic effects to many places in the world (read about Bangladesh for example), but I have no idea if we are accelerating the process.

As for 2100, Ill be dead anyway, and I aint breeding. So not my problem.

I will give China credit for adressing their emissions though. They do use far less energy per capita than we do. Electric vehicles are far more common, etc. I think they are doing it more for strategic energy reasons than anything though.

record cold here in Boston last week.

As the ice caps melt.

Politically I am not sure how to balance this situation. But the world as a whole, as it grows, is suffering. Soon enough we will bury it with all the random nukes thrown in the ocean, and population increasing worldwide at the clip that it is.

People don't grasp how much of a blip on the radar industrial revolution/emissions/mass cities is in the scheme of things. Think about what it was like in 1900 and the little we threw up in the air compared to today. Just 117 years ago.

117 years later and I don't believe we're that much more educated on what exactly 'normal' is for this planet.

I'm not saying climate doesn't change naturally.

I'm just saying you are a fool if you don't think urban expansion and just the sheer volume of people throwing nasty into the air all day every day has no affect on the planet.

In the very least our natural is drying up or being tarnished quick. Not quick maybe in terms of your own selfish views. But quick enough.

I'm not saying we're not affecting it but rather stating people should realize we don't know how great an effect we have on the planet.

And consider that other countries are given a free pass to industrialize as they see fit while we (US) are supposed to pay trillions AND hamstring our growth. Why support such a venture?

Running out of fresh water is the first major crisis to come I think. Middle East and India first. China next.

Someone who perfects and cheapens large scale desalination of seawater will make a fortune. And or lots of people will die.

I just know when stuff like that hits LA, NYC, HOU and all those people move out into the woods. The woods will quickly suffer.

I live fairly rural as opposed to anyone in or right next to a major city. Just a shame that perhaps my kids will grow up with much less real outdoors than I had growing up. My Gramps has always said the air just seemed to feel more fresh and smell better in the 30s and 40s when he was growing up.

Man, living in china has shown me where its going. Even out in the country, its hard to find an inch that isnt humanized in some way. This place is just endless sprawling city that runs into the next endless sprawling city.

I love hearing people talk about their village. I went to a village once. Focking place has more people than the entire Memphis metropolitan area.

Now Im told out West there is still some wilderness. But they are hard at work ruining that too.

Yeah was thinking this. I don't really like the prospects of living like it is China when I hit retirement. I can't imagine some of the biggest cities in China and how life is there. I love NYC....to visit. But could never consider living there or anything similar. China has to be unimaginable in certain places.

It is odd to say, but the west of America is still trying to populate. Places like Colorado and Washington look like hot places right now. Out of the top 10 state population growth it looks like 6 are what I would consider west. With 2 OTHERS being Texas and North Dakota. Only states declining in population are Vermont, Illinois, West Virginia.

Oh, youll be fine. The population of the us would have to multiply by five before it gets to present day china levels. Youll be dead long before then.

It still amazes me sometimes. The cities are so damn big and dense that there are entire districts I have never been to. Just no reason to.

New York wouldnt even be a top ten city here.

Yet they keep breeding just like its nothing. Everywhere I go its grandmothers and babies all over (Chinese parents seem to have little involvement with their kids, seems to be a grandma thing.)

Ive asked a couple Chinese friends... like man. Do you not see where this is going? Now its 1.6 billion. Next generation, what, 2, 2.25 billion? Then three?

Seriously. How many fockers do you people think you can stack on top of one another? Pull the Fock out already!

Great comment from the Yahoo story concerning the latest dire warning from the 15,000 scientists from 184 countries -

"Hmm, perhaps this would be a good time to re-visit some of these geniuses' past dire warnings. Here are just a few:
1. Within a few years "children just aren't going to know what snow is." Snowfall will be "a very rare and exciting event." Dr. David Viner, senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, March 20, 2000.
2. "[by] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots…[by 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers." Michael Oppenheimer, published in "Dead Heat," St. Martin's Press, 1990.
3. "Arctic specialist Bernt Balchen says a general warming trend over the North Pole is melting the polar ice cap and may produce an ice-free Arctic Ocean by the year 2000." Christian Science Monitor, June 8, 1972.
4. "We're actually projecting this year that the North Pole may be free of ice for the first time," Dr. David Barber of Manitoba University , 2008.
5. "By the year 2000 the United Kingdom will be simply a small group of impoverished islands, inhabited by some 70 million hungry people ... If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000." Paul Ehrlich, Speech at British Institute For Biology, September 1971.
6. "In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish." Ehrlich, speech during Earth Day, 1970.
Tell you what. When these frauds get even ONE prediction right, maybe then I'll start worrying."

One of the smarter things that China has voluntarily agreed to do even though they are allowed to increase their emissions for quite some time into the future, they have decided 2 limit most of their unnecessary emissions until after the heat of the day has passed. Meaning most of they're heavy factories and heaviest pollutants will be running in the evening and overnight.

Soon they will lead the world in nocturnal emissions.
