World Cup Final Drops 32 Percent From 2014...

The 2018 World Cup is all over. And despite significant early ratings fatigue compared to the 2014 tournament, Sundays final was ultimately down a steep 32 percent in final returns.

Nielsen Media gives Foxs coverage of the France-Croatia final 11.8 million viewers, off significantly from the 17.3 million viewers who tuned into ABC and ESPN for the 2014 match. Earlier returns were much more optimistic. The game had posted a 8.3 overnight rating among households, down only 15 percent from the comparable 9.7 overnight rating in 2014.

Coverage of Sunday's match, which aired at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT, peaked at a 10.0 overnight rating. That was down 30 percent from the comparable peak in 2014. The fact that Frances victory was a relatively decisive one likely didnt help viewer retention. With a final score of 4-2, and a brief advantage of three goals, it was hardly the nail-biter of 2014. Germany took that game 1-zip over Argentina.

Compared to 2010, when Spain and the Netherlands played the final in South Africa, Sundays ratings were only only down a scant 3 percent.

Through the round of 16, Fox Sports World Cup coverage was down 19 percent from the comparable showing on ESPN in 2014 and improved from 2010. Final averages for both are expected this week.

Viewership and ratings for Telemundo, which carried Spanish-language coverage of the final, were not immediately available.

France vs Croatia the who cares of who cares.

England vs France would have been better.

An England/France game would have gotten better ratings, but in the end, it is still soccer...

For a worldwide sport that covers the globe, even 17.3m seems awfully low for a final.

Here alone in the US, damn near 104m people tuned in for the SB.

I DVR'd it and fast forwarded to the goals when I got home.

Does that count as watching it?

Weren't the 2014 Brazil games shown in the afternoon?

The final aired at 8 am on the west coast. That's probably a factor.

While Fox isn't happy about the number of viewers tuning into the 2018 World Cup Final, they are excited about the number of World Cup related posts made by the user "Posty" on a lightly trafficked fantasy football message board.

Fox's Director of Media stated, "Posty is doing his best to bring soccer awareness to the fantasy football community. For those who don't know him, he plays it off as though he doesn't like soccer. However, based on the number of posts he has related to the 2018 World Cup, it's obvious he's doing his part to bring people aboard the soccer bandwagon." He followed up with a chuckle, "We're already looking forward to what Posty brings to the table in 2022."

It's wasn't an exciting match up just going by the countries represented but the match itself was excellent and very entertaining. France/English would have attracted a lot more people globally to watch. It happens.
