Recommended Posts

So, we're remodeling our kitchen. OK, we're paying a guy to remodel our kitchen. Buying all new appliances, and after some research , consumer reports digging, have settled on a set of LG appliances. Fridge, stove, dishwasher, micro.

Any recommendetions, cautions, etc? What do you like?

LG is what I like. However I'm thinking of buying Samsung due to in large part to their black stainless steel series

LG seems good for that stuff. I think I have all Whirlpool currently and have had a few issues here and there over the last 9 years (one fuse on the dishwasher went out and cost a good deal to have replaced)...the icemaker on the fridge focked up (the little thing that is supposed to keep it stired a bit so they don't all stick froze up and had to be fixed...issues with the water lines too...they just gave us a new unit and that one has been fine.

Cooktop and micro have been good.

Have not heard great things about Samsung for some things. In laws had issues with their washer and dryer and customer service was surprisingly bad.

On Dishwasher...stainless interiors...and get the quietest one you can. Big thing for us too is making sure the top part is tall enough for taller cups like those insulated Tervis things.

How are your whirlpool washer and dryer? Those are what I'm looking at getting as far as those go.

Have Samsung fridge, stove, microwave, W & D, and a couple TVs. Have had nothing but great luck. Couldn't comment on customer service because I don't believe we've had one problem with any of them.

Don't do Whirlpool. That's what came with our new construction home and the dishwasher and stove are garbage. We're actually giving up on the stove and buying a new one even though the damn thing is only two years old and has been "fixed" a half-dozen times.

Relatedly, don't go for the cheapest or near-cheapest models available. That's what the builder did of course and mid-range is way better even within the same brand.

What are you doing for countertops? Im having mine remodeled. We went with solid surface. Taking it to the bare walls..re wiring, plumbing etc. Setting me back about 30 grand..hope its worth it and gets the wife off my friggin back..I even am adding a chain attachment to the island so she cant come out and bother me in the livingroom.

Have Kenmore Elite W&D...love them.

Have had whirlpool before and they were ok.

Just a general rule for appliances, avoid the bottom end as mentioned. Also, avoid the very top as well, as the price is never really worth any supposed extra gained. One step below the top seems to be the sweet spot most of the time.

Our kitchen stuff is all GE except the range top (Dacor flat glass which has a crack and we need to replace). Overall good, had to replace the ice maker on the fridge, no big deal (moving parts in a freezer will not last forever IMO).

On the dishwasher, we replaced it a few years ago with a GE (I forget what we had before), and we actually took our plates and glasses/cups to the appliance store to see how they fit. I know, if you are dropping $30G on a remodel you can get plates that fit the new dishwasher, but... you'd be surprised how the racks are different.

Also have relatively new Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer, so far so good. Front loading is the way to go; it spins clothes dry like a motherfocker.

This is a total tear out, cabinets, granite counters, new floor, everything. It's the original kitchen from 1967, so it's time!

Convert to a gas stove if not already. Thank me later.

Have all Kenmore Elite, which themselves are just renamed stuff from others, had a few issues over the years, but the Sears warranty is strong.

Wow, terrible advice.

Maybe you mean a gas range? Those are awesome but you definitely don't want a gas oven.

Not unless you're Hitler, anyway.

Gas as opposed to electric is good advice.

I would also look at a combo microwave/convection oven for when you just want to cook something small.

No you don't want a gas oven. They are sh1t and don't cook certain foods well. They break a lot too. I've had both and this has been my experience as well as what appliance folks tend to say.

Do want a gas range though.

Best thing is a combo gas range and electric convection oven.

I have had gas for over 20 years. Never had a problem. Maybe your trailer's propane tanks are dirty. :dunno:

You have a gas OVEN? We're talking about the same thing here? Not gas RANGE?

You ever actually make stuff in there or does the missus?

I dunno, the builder did put in a sh1t oven as detailed above but I've lived in apartments in my earlier years that had electric ovens that were older than dirt and still worked great. Prior to this house had a newer electric convection oven that was focking awesome

Whirlpool and GE still make a lot of their products in America. Not being preachy, but when I buy a new grill I will factor it in before I buy one.

I meant what I meant.

Sorry your gas oven was what your "box builder" wanted to install. Homeowners should choose what they want installed.

I stand by my advice.

Implying I didn't know what I was talking about, yes, I'll defend my position and highlight where your opinion was worthless. You are basing your opinion on a shithole, cheapass gas oven, you already agreed was a piece of crap.

I, in my opinion, believe a good gas oven and range is the way to go.

Better?

I've never heard one way or another about gas ovens. Gas ranges are supposedly preferred by chefs; we had one in our previous house, and my wife was sad when we moved to a neighborhood without gas. But in the end it wasn't a big deal, and the convenience of cleaning the flat glass electric range top is better, even she agrees.

A range has both a stove (stove top) and an oven (the box at the bottom that you bake in).

Gas ranges, stoves and ovens are fine.

Agreed...no experience myself with gas ranges. Mother had one and replaced it withing a year. Hated cleaning it and loves her glass top better for keeping things just warm and so on. (and my parents cook a lot)

I've had both types electric and gas and I prefer gas for almost all cooking situations. We bought all GE Profile stuff about 9 years ago and it hasn't been great.

I just recently had the igniter switch replaced in the oven portion of the gas range. ($135) No big deal.

But, I had to replace the OTR microwave after 3 years (now i'ts an LG) and the ice maker in the fridge went out at about the same time. Recently the fridge has gotten a little louder as well.

I won't buy GE again.

I couldn't believe that it took people this long on that one. I lofted it up there, waiting for something... [crickets]

I have LG front loading stackable W/D and they are great.. Before that has Kenmore Affinity which was also very very good.

I replaced the dishwasher with a maytag that I have no complaints with. I get GE kitchen appliances for the stuff i build and they tend to be pretty reliable. No brand is perfect.

cleaning is definitely true, but cooking on a gas range is much much better than electric. It just heats up so much faster.
