Easily the Beatles. Too many to list. Not sure who would be second as it gets very personalized.

Internationally, id say Michael Jackson. Elvis and the Beatles were too long ago.

My first year in china, my assistant said, "I heard a great English song yesterday. Do you know it?"

She plays it. It was something someone sung on the china idol or some such show.

It was Hey Jude.

I was like, "um yeah. Everyone knows hey Jude. But all the little teacher girls were running around like they discovered it.

One of the worst songs ever...

Best choice so far.

I don't care who you say Tom Petty is close. All those songs play on classic rock radio stations. Old and new like him.

List the songs. I can't think of 13 MJ songs off the top of my head.

Little kids and old people of all races know his songs. Do you think 10 year old black kids know Tom Petty? 10 year old white kids know Michael Jackson.

I was thinking he was more thriller album oriented. I forgot a few songs.

I don;'t know I just feel a ton of white folks 10 to 75 know Tom Petty and even some black folk. Tom Petty is certainly an underdog here.

Reason #47 why I'm doing this dad thing right.

Out of the blue, my 9 yr old son asked me to play Hey Jude on guitar tonight.

I used to play and sing it to him to help him go to sleep when he was a baby.

You guys are ridiculously ethnocentric.

For example, Google despacito.

That is a one-off.

More to the question, Tom Petty even the Beatles Don't even crack the top 10 when you start thinking outside of our pathetic little borders.

Beyond Staples like any one of the great Tenors, look to any artist who has hit big in say, India.

There are so many huge mega stars out there that Americans have never even heard of. Just in England alone Robbie Williams has officially surpassed Elvis and The Beatles. And everyone else.

I mention India not just because of their huge population, but because they have expats all over the world and their music and culture follows them.

Related, you'd be amazed at what a Bollywood hit pulls in versus a Hollywood Blockbuster.

Despacito is huge in multiple continents - and Americans are largely clueless. Again, just an example.

I like Tom Petty and we get it, you love him. But he isn't in the stratosphere of the Beatles and Michael Jackson as far as worldwide fame. Not even in the adjacent universe.

Define the era first.

Cause I could go all over the board with this topic.

Also, Tom Petty, Beatles and The Stones are obviously good calls.

I think those into the Stones are really into the Stones.. I'm not sure they have a casual base.. Me for instance, I'm damn near 48 - can maybe name 4 Stones songs by title. :dunno:

I dislike the Rolling Stones music. I almost made a thread about most popular artist or band you don't like and was going to put Rolling Stones in the first post.

If it was most people alive today, due to media and tech, I'd say maybe Adele. Not as many songs as others listed, but widespread reach.

Nah. It would be some boy band. Probably an Asian one you've never heard of.

In terms of contemporary American acts, Bruno mars, Coldplay, Katy perry, would probably be your winners. Adele would be up there though.

I'm just going off what I hear people singing in ktv mostly.

If those huge populations have heard her, and almost all the medium and smaller pops have, yet the medium and smaller pops don't necessarily hear the artists big in China or India...then...

This might be Algebra.
