Manning - Record 4th MVP

Recommended Posts

Very well deserved to the best QB in the league. Can this guy go a year without breaking a record somewhere?

Has anyone seen the voting stats? Just curious who else got votes.

Peyton Manning became the first player to win The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player honors four times. The Indianapolis Colts' sensational quarterback romped to the award Saturday in balloting by 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. He got 39 1/2 votes to 7 1/2 for Drew Brees as only quarterbacks received any backing.

The other votes went to San Diego's Philip Rivers with two, and Minnesota's Brett Favre with one.

Good to see him get the award considering the adversity that he's lead his team through. Surprised Brees didn't get more votes, though. Felt he certainly deserved more consideration.

Not sure if the Colts defense is strong enough to help propel the team to another SB win... but manning is certainly one of the top QB's in the game right now and deserving of the MVP title.

It should have been Phillip Rivers. But in all fairness, he isn't in as many commercials.

lot of deserving players this yr, esp qbs. in the end, the glaring preseason losses and incredulous expectations, and 7 4th qtr comebacks did the trick.

manning

Could this be sour grapes because the all mighty (over rated) Tom Brady got no votes.

:dunno:

Rivers was great this year but the Chargers would still be a darn good football team if they lost him. Now the Colts on the other hand would not be very good at all without Manning  So clear cut MVP even in my book

Solid choice. Chris Johnson should be the Offensive Player of the Year when that award is announced.

Nope. He didn't deserve it this year.

Wow. Rodgers got robbed...

More total yards

More total TDs

[i think we have to count rushing yards and TDs..... If peyton throws it in from the 3 or Rodgers rushes it in from the 3; does it matter? Actually, Rodgers case is better.... because that means that nobody was open and Rodgers did something that Manning couldn't do and got 7 points for the Packers when Manning would have gotten 3]

Alright... even if you don't count the valuable stuff Rodgers does on the ground.... yards and TDs are still very similiar (almost identical)....

Passer rating Rodgers 103.2 > Manning 99.9

3rd down passing results: Rodgers kills Manning

Interceptions: very important stat..... Manning with more than double (16!) drive-killing, game-changing INTs than Rodgers (7)

Manning does play on a better team than Rodgers does but I'm unsure on how that makes him more valuable....

He received 39½ votes to 7½ for Drew Brees of New Orleans. Only four players -- all quarterbacks -- earned votes. The other two were Philip Rivers of San Diego (2) and Brett Favre of Minnesota (1)."

I'm not sure about your last sentence. If the Colts without Manning played the Packers without Rodgers, I would put my money on the Packers.

Wooooooah... slow down... Have you seen Flynn play?? :pointstosky:

All i'm asking for is the slightest consideration..... of which there was none for Rodgers.... despite his stats being more impressive....

Rodgers had two of his best games of the season against Minn.... something like 770 yards and 6 TDs to only 1 INT (at a time when the O-line was the absolute worst)....

The Packers lost those games despite Rodgers excellent performances....

But maybe your post does highlight the problem: too many people who don't really actually watch the football games getting to vote :pointstosky:

I feel favre should have won this award. I am fine with manning........anyone other than brees rodgers or rivers is good with me

Rivers had the best argument...certainly a better argument than Favre did this year.

It was Manning or Rivers...either one IMO deserved it just fine...or CJ.

Rodgers was sacked a total of 14 times and held on to the ball way too long on many plays in those 2 games. If I remember correctly there was a team meating where Rodgers was told by his teammates about his problem with holding on to the ball. You may be correct though, seems like even the own players fans don't really know what happened in those games.. So if you honestly believe Rodgers played amazing games and had no hand in his team losing those games then football just isn't your thing. You are way to hung up on the final stat line at the end of the game.

Way to try to be a smart a$$ though, I guess whatever makes you feel better?

With your angle you should also be complaining that Schaub didnt get any votes.

Donny,

Rodgers had some nice stats and a great year but was never in the running for mvp as we discussed a few weeks back. Move on, he wasnt robbed, he just isnt quite there yet. His stats were comparable to others, not eye popping (for this year) and the team (and he) lost key games to the vikes and others along the way. Whether he played well or not, at the end of the day the voters look at Ws as one of the criteria.

To win an MVP, you need to be one of the following:

- best player on a top seed team (top 4 or so)

- record breaking stats far exceeding the pack

- a player that clearly carries a lesser team far beyond their expectation to the playoffs

Manning hit on #1, rivers, favre and brees also could be said to have done this to some degree, though I dont see favre as the vikes best player.

This was an amazing year for qbs.

- No less than 7 qbs exceeded 4300 yds passing

- 5 exceeded 100 in qb rating

- 12 exceeded 90 in qb rating

Without verifying, I'm sure these and several others are records that have never happened in a season before. Aaron is one of these guys, but his numbers are lost in the sea of several great qb seasons.

I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ at all.... You said, "at least show up" in those big games..... and I showed you he did way, way more than show up.

You were just flat out wrong.... He scored more than enough points and racked up more than enough yards to win if the defense isn't garbage.

He had 2 awesome games that I can't see any of the MVP candidate quarterback's having with what was such a pathetic offensive line....

The Packers have gotten better as the season progressed is due to them getting healthier (veterans Clifton and Tauscher back) and McCarthy using the short passing game more.... (not so much because of your meeting)

Ask me if I would rather take more sacks then chucking up Manning's 16 INTs... I will take the sacks.

I will also take the plays were Rodgers holds on for a bit an hits Jennings for 50 yards or runs for 20 yards himself...

Your "he took 14 sacks" rationale was weak.... he played very well in both of those games in crazy circumstances (bad, bad o-line)

Considering he was playing on a humongous national stage in the shadow of a GB and NFL icon, he definitely did "show up."

and during these last 8 games -- with an intact line -- he has been unmatched....

Have you seen CURTIS PAINTER play?!? :o

But in all fairness, Rodgers had a fantastic season.

Manning had equal stats as Rodgers, which is slightly (a lot) more impressive considering he had a new Head Coach, a new Offensive Coordinator, lost his HOF #1 WR (well now #2), AND lost his replacement in week 1. Also, his team was essentially 14-0 with Manning playing, while the Packers were 11-5.

Sidenote though - I think Manning probably had it won regardless, but was there any doubt after the Colts' week 16 performance?? Manning plays well against the Jets, builds a small lead despite a kick return for a TD...then Painter comes in and the Colts get outscored what, 19-0 in a quarter and a half??? The bottom line is there's never been a team carried by one player more than Manning carries the Colts...and that goes a long way in the MVP voting, especially if you're team goes 14-2.

When I said "Rodgers got robbed!" that was clearly a joke.... But I just wondering why he wasn't even in the discussion.... and I think I made a good case for him...

That being said, I love Peyton.... great QB..... will more than likely shatter all of Favre's records someday..

I will say that Rodgers may eclipse Brady this weekend if that's any consolation.

Well put...

I will say I think Rodgers deserved more credit than he got...It's probably the quietest 4,400 yard, 30:7 TD/INT (with solid rushing stats) season in the history of the NFL.

After watching Rodgers' performance his playoff loss... I would not at all be surprised if he were the MVP next year. If it weren't for the facemask fumble I'm confident GB would've won. Tho he should've connected with Jennings to end it first play of OT.
