IGotWorms 3,311 Posted January 26, 2017 I wonder what restaurants Timmy is eating in. PF Chang's and so forth, yeah I'm sure they're giving you a fork. But I don't think I've ever been to an authentic Asian (non-Chinese) place that gave you silverware without request.

They have a little ladle type thing for the broth and use the sticks to put the noodles in the ladle. much bigger than a spoon A fork with soup would be barbaric

Since Americans like to use chopsticks they have to roll the sushi tighter so it doesn't fall apart.

They went to Japan to visit his family and went out for sushi. She randomly ate stuff and found out afterward there apparently was a proper order to eat it, and others in the restaurant were laughing at her. She darn near killed her husband. Djgb13 2,338 Posted January 26, 2017 I read somewhere that sushi is meant to be eaten with your fingers. Since Americans like to use chopsticks they have to roll the sushi tighter so it doesn't fall apart. Yes it is meant to be eaten with your hand. You're also supposed to dip the sushi in soy sauce with the fish side down. Not the rice. Wasabi was also eaten with sushi to kill bacteria in the fish but with better sanitation it is no longer necessary

wiffleball 4,640 Posted January 26, 2017 I came in here to talk about Eating sushi with your fingers. I'm glad others have heard of this as well. You kind of cracks me up to watch westerners Try to eat sushi with chopsticks. It's like watching people eat nachos with a fork. What westerners also don't understand is there are as I recall Like five distinct categories of sushi. Of that, Four of them are specifically designed to be eaten with your fingers. What's the most hilarious is watching Westerners try to eat the seaweed rolls that are shaped like mini ice cream cones (maki?) With chopsticks. It's pretty f****** obvious that was never designed to be the case. The same thing with Rolls that are sliced up into Bite-size pieces. Really, by Design and practicality, The only sushi that Requires Chopsticks is sashimi. One, so you don't end up with stinky fish fingers And 2 because it's f****** barbaric To take a beautiful piece of fish and stab it with a fork. Having said that, I will admit to having given into Societal norms If I'm With business people or on a date And acquiesce and go the stupid way with chopsticks.Mostly Just so I'm not that guy Who lectures everybody on how they're supposed to eat. wiffleball 4,640 Posted January 26, 2017 As far as eating Westernized Asian food With a fork, It pretty much makes sense. Because the way we cook our rice Necessitates it. True rice should be sticky should form into Lump that are easy to eat with chopsticks, But given that most of our Asian food is prepared by Juan Rodriguez That's not how our rice generally comes out. Thornton Melon 544 Posted January 26, 2017 Used to be this way and still is in some places. But there are also the fork and no chopsticks places. Ate Korean yesterday and had to ask for chopsticks. I've eaten at Korean restaurants in Korea and not even seen chopsticks. As for me, I'll use a fork, thanks. I don't know what the big "experience" is of eating at an Asian restaurant. In my neck of the woods, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an Asian restaurant...assuming you can find a dead cat in the vicinity of an Asian restaurant
