Name your top 3 beers

Recommended Posts

i'm not a beer drinker and tend to only like corona.

i would like to venture out and try some new ones.

i've asked the curlies to list their favorites and remembered that you guys are probably the beer experts.

what are your top 3 beers?

so far i'm going to try:

magic hat #9

sol

red stripe

schlafly pumpkin ale

xingu

boston lager

blue moon (with an orange slice?)

abita (not sure which)

guiness

ommegang (something or the other)

feel free to co-sign on any of the above.

Boston Lager is great. Drinking one right now at the bar and watching UFC. Also love a local Micro called Hazed and Infused. Another great beer that you would never like is called Arrogant Bastard Ale. Very strong. Even I can't drink it daily but when I'm in the mood for it it can't be beat.

Franziskanner Weiss Bier. If you like Blue Moon you should try this - it's slightly drier and less sweet, also goes well with a lemon. I think this is my favorite beer of all-time. Only problem is that it gives me wicked hangovers, I think from the sugar. Paulaner is in the same class, so is Hoegarden. Blue Moon is like the sh1t version of these beers.

Yards Philly Pale Ale. Totally different - this is a bitter, hoppy IPA type ale. Absolutely freaking delicious.

Not really sure I have a third favorite. A few others that I like are Alagash White, Anchor Steam, Newcastle Brown Ale ... Most of the time I drink Corona. If I'm really slumming it I'll go for Rolling Rock or the champagne of beers.

i think the thing i don't like about beer is hops...i'm not sure, but i was told hops adds bitterness to beers.

i was told IPAs have lots of hops....or was that american beers have lots of hops?

Hops add bitterness. Ales always have hops to some extent but IPAs are generally very hoppy. I love that flavor sometimes but if you don't like it, Yards Philly Pale won't be the beer for you. Check out Franziskanner though, just a great beer. I'm drinking one right now.

Corona is definitely one of the more distinct tasting beers, among the non-darks. Bush, Budweiser, Coors, etc. all have a similar taste. My top 3:

1. Rastputen's Russian Imperial Stout - hands down the best dark beer I ever drank. Not sold in Florida unfortunately.

2. Becks - best of all non-darks.

3. Corona - I know, i know... "mexican piss-water". Still, I've always liked it.

Whoever puts "Red Stripe" in their top 3 is insane. Ain't nothing distinct about Red Stripe. :dunno:

STELLLLLLAAAAAA !!!

Stella has been really well marketed, as a premium beer. The French should stick to wine. It's really sour. Well packaged, well marketed .... but about as smooth as a Budweiser. It's a beer meant to make you look cool, that tastes bad .... but be my guest.

Prolly the best beers I ever had were in Paris .... full % Carlsberg on tap. Did not have the alcohol content restrictions of American beer and was really smooth. They don't drink Stella in France .... they drink Carlsberg.

You aren't missing anything.

Better than Corona or Bud ... but not by much.

You're selling Stella short. It may be a little overhyped but it is far, far better than Corona and especially Bud.

Also, FYI, Stella is from Belgium, not France. I think you would agree that the Belgians know a thing or two about good beer, no?

Gulden draak

Duchess de bourgogne

Franziskaner dunkel weissen

St bernardus

Meridsous

I usually go for german and belgian biers. There a lot of very good american micros and craft biers out there, but for me a high percentage is either boring or trying out-hop the next guy (the ipa trend). Of the north american my favorites are ommegang, allegash, unibroue, new belgium (for their lips of faith lineup), avery, stone, dogfish head. As mentioned, blue moon is a decent attempt at a belgium wit bier (the orange goes better because of the coriander characteristics). Lemon tends to work better with the german wheats. If you are not into hoppy bier try some wheats, marzens, dunkels, doubles, tripples, porters and stouts

sux, i think it's one thing to have a favorite beer and quite another to discuss what you usually drink.

the guy i work with tends to drink pabst blue ribbon and miller lite, but he can still rattle off the best tasting beers.

oh, speaking of french beer, i forgot to add belzebuth to my list!

i hate georgia blue laws, i can't buy a beer today!!!

My favorite beer is the one I usually drink. That's kind of the point of having a favorite beer.

+1

If you want to try new beers, but don't like bitter/hoppy, stick with Belgium, Germany and England.

Ommegang Abbey is my favorite of the beers on your OP. The Chimay Red would be similar, if you can't find the Ommegang. The Rochefort Trappistes 8 is my personal favorite of the Belgium Abbey/Double style.

My favorite beer rigt now is the Tripel Karmeliet. It's fruity and aromatic, with really nice floral notes. The mix of 3 grains gives it a real unique flavor.
