Mayweather-Pacquiao Boxing Match to Cost $99 on Pay-Per-View

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't have paid $20, probably not even $10.

A month before boxers Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao even enter the ring, their May 2 title fight is already breaking records, with the pay-per-view bout set to cost fans $99 according to people close to the negotiations between the networks and TV distributors.
HBO and Showtime, which are handling negotiations for the camps of Mr. Pacquiao and Mr. Mayweather respectively, are expected to wrap up deals with major pay-TV distributors in the next few days for the highly anticipated welterweight title fight. The negotiations stalled last week as distributors and HBO and Showtime sparred over the split of what is expected to be record-setting pay-per-view revenue.
Under the terms being discussed, the fight will be sold for $99 for a high-definition feed and $89 for standard definition, both of which are record prices. The previous high was $74.95 for high-definition and $64.95 for standard.
Initially, pay TV distributors were asked to give up as much as 70% of the revenue instead of the usual 50% to 55%. That offer was quickly rejected.
The tentative agreement now being hammered out will be less favorable to the distributors than the standard deal but not as drastic as the first offer, people with knowledge of the terms said. The final split will also be determined by the amount of marketing and promotions the various cable operators put into the fight. If certain incentives are met, the distributors have the potential to get 40% of the pay-per-view revenue.
The key deals for HBO and Showtime are with iN Demand, which negotiates on behalf of Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc. and other large cable companies, and with DirecTV, the nation’s largest satellite TV operator with more than 20 million subscribers.
The other distributors that HBO and Showtime will try to reach accords with are Dish Network and Vubiquity, which handles negotiations for AT&T Inc. and other distributors.
Boxing enthusiasts have been waiting years for this fight and the popularity of Mr. Mayweather and Mr. Pacquiao is such that the bout is expected to be of interest to more than just the hard-core fan. Some industry observers have predicted that it could top three million pay-per-view purchases, which could amount to upward of $300 million. The current record is $152 million for Mr. Mayweather’s fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

You are a full blown sucker if you pay $99 to watch a fight that should have happened 5 years ago. Featuring a couple of fighters that are not what they once were.

Watching my dog lick his empty ball sack will be more entertaining than the fight.

Five years ago, awesome, now, not so much

I would pay the $99 if Newbie vs RP was on the undercard. Although that fight might be more one-sided than Wiffleball vs sobriety.

I'd toy with Ducky for a few rounds before putting him on the canvas for good.

Wow what a blatant customer gouge.

That's just the world we live in now.

make as much as humanly possible, not what you need to put on the event. Have you seen concert ticket prices? Sporting events?

I'm definitely pulling a posty on this one - no way in hell I'd shell out a nickel to watch this.

I'm sure they are working on the script of how the fight will go and finalizing plans for the rematch. I hear it's going to be called: Fleece II.

It would be fun to watch. Me taking my robe off. You, with urine streaming down your leg, opting to keep your robe on to cover your 'computer-body'. Then the bell ringing and me lunging and faking a punch and you screaming in a high-pitched tone and dropping immediately into a fetal position. Twelve second knockout without having thrown a punch. :first:

Mayweather is the most boring champion the sport has seen in the last 20 years. No power. Just bobbing and weaving and counter punching. His fights are snoozefests. That being said, I would have paid to see the two best fighters in the sport 5 or 6 years ago. But never today. Both well past their prime. And as exciting as Pacman is to watch, Mayweather will even make him look boring.

Internet = free Pay-Per-View, along with every live sporting event in the world - every NFL game, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc., along with every movie/tv show ever made.

Or you could pay $100 to watch a terrible fight. :dunno:

LOLOL its actually a more realistic scenario than one may think. Actually facing an opponent and putting up your dukes takes a huge amount of balls, bravery and guts. Especially if the opponent is physically imposing. I cant say a fight between you and me would go any differently really, its just natural instinct if your not used to altercation or just plain scared.

I would piss myself if gutterboy told me to put of my dukes.

This may hurt their ppv sales. More people will want to seek out bars or "carpool" at friends houses rather than order it themselves.

I'll watch it in a bar that has it on. Just won't pay any money for it. It's always fun to watch and hope that bigmouth Mayweather gets beat, although I doubt that happens.

Well becasue you say there is no way people should pay for a fight that should of happened 5 years ago ... my point is while yes it would have been better 5 years ago but as we stand today there is still no BETTER fight to be made and they are still the very best in in business.

In the last 8 years or so, I think I've seen every Pacquiao fight and I believe I've only missed 2 Mayweather fights

So while I'll end up with friends at a bar watching it, I'll openly admit I would pay $100 for it even if I was watching alone. Yet I wouldn't pay $5 for any fight in the sport not involving either of these 2 guys, nor for any UFC fight.

He has definitely taken the Sugar Ray Leonard approach, thats for sure. Although he does get the benefit of the doubt much less than focking leonard did. Easily on my Mount Rushmore of most hated athletes ever.

Maybe in the surrounding Detroit area, but not so much in a lot of other places. Sugar Ray is also very loved by many.

Ha, but I do understand the hatred for Sugar Ray in your area... But hey, like all that saw the fight that night like I did - all Hearns had to do was stay away from him, he had the fight won - but he didn't, and it cost him the fight.

I wouldn't pay that for anything on TV. I'm not too much into boxing, like most of American sports fans, but I think you're delusional if you think this isn't one of the biggest fights ever despite both being considerably past their primes. I think it would be less interesting if one were in his prime and one was out of his prime, say if Pac was 32 and Floyd was 38. I think, essentially, both are equally out of their primes and neither really has an advantage when it comes to age.

Am I wrong in thinking they are still the #1 and #2 pound for pound boxers in the world? Honest question.

Floyd yes, manny eh maybe. Its because boxing is essentially dead, no fighters want to box, they are all mma training now. I cant even name other boxers right now. Back in the day I knew 20-30.

Yes, I agree with the assessment on the first fight. If Hearns fights leonard the way he fought hagler and vice versa he probably wins those fights. In the second hearns/sugar ray fight Leonard got pummeled, yet earned a draw. I've said it before and i will say it again...fock sugar ray leonard.

Was going to order and have friends over if it was $50 or $60. Now I'm refusing just on principle. I'll just watch it at the bar.

That's cheap. They normally charge per seat, up to the max.

does the bar hold only 30 people?
