Another nice thread

Recommended Posts

Were going to go on a real vacation (I.e. not traveling to visit family) next winter before the youngest is 2, so as to take advantage of the lap child benefit.

What do you guys recommend?

Kids will be 4 and almost 2.

Were on the West Coast so thinking more like Hawaii than the Carribean.

Please feel free to discuss your favorite vacation even if it was off the east coast, Europe etc. :)

Hard to go wrong with Hawaii

Depends where you go on Hawaii, many of the beaches are not young kid friendly. Florida or myrtle beach has more "kid friendly" beaches.

I am in the same situation, I would like to go on vacation, but it is not feasible. It is easier to visit the parents and then ditch the kids with them a few times. This has been our strategy this week and we have had a great time going out to eat or to dave and busters.

Maybe when they are 3 and 5 we can do some kid friendly vacations easier.

Youre on the West Coast right? Wouldnt make much sense to travel this far but I loved Aruba and St. Johns.

4 and 2 is tough Worms... and it all depends on the kids themselves really - could they really enjoy a tropical or beach vacation?

why not take them to Disney but stay at a Deluxe resort? here's my thinking on that:

1. they are too young to realize-what they "missed" so you can go at your own pace.

2. even at a slower / young kids pace, they will still see a ton and get worn out

3. staying at a Deluxe hotel (Grand Floridian, Polynesian) makes the resort a nice place for you to hang out at

4. Exhausted / happy kids napping at a resort with you and the Mrs. is actually pretty damn relaxing.

We just took our kids to Aruba (ages 8 and 12) and they loved it as much or more than Disney... but they love the beach and swimming, waterslides, water sports, etc. I don't know if they would have done as well when they were younger - and the sun is a real concern when you have little ones.

We go to Hawaii often. I never get tired of it. Many fun activities. We have not had issues with the beaches on Maui. Big island and Kauai are more rugged.

Man..... I would love a winter vacation in Austria or Switzerland. The kids would enjoy the Christmas markets

Hmm, this is a good point. Disneyland may be a better way to go.

They would like the beach (at least the older one for sure) but maybe not for days on end. Plus theres the whole swimming issue which is stressful.

Yeah and you want them to appreciate hawaii. Been there 5 times now....didnt take my daughter until she was 6....its still all she talks about.

Not sure id deal with disney at that age...they won't remember it at all...then you have to go again.

Disneyland will be lost on them; whatever you do, they will never remember anything anyway. My advice is to do what you and the wife want to do -- whatever it is, you can figure out a way to make it fun for a 4 and 2 year old.

I would have the opposite opinion. I think the beach would be much easier and fun with kids at that age.

2 years old is a tough age to travel too, especially flying where you are captive in a seat for hours. Plus penultimatestraw and a few others hate kids, if they are on the same flight. How about Grammy and Grampa come in to watch the kids -- you pay for their flights depending on financial situations -- and you and the wife go on a fockfest somewhere to rekindle things, which you said recently are a little shaky?

The kids travel great so far. Took a trip recently (to visit family) that was four hours of flying plus an hour of driving. They did well and even that ol fuddy duddy penultimate wouldve gotten over their presence on the plane.

So thats not an issue. But them not remembering and cramping our style definitely are.

Thats not a bad idea. Neither set of grandparents is very good for the watching the kids thing they like visiting but dont want the responsibility. However it may be time for them to step up a bit

Kids at that age will have just as much fun at grandmas as they would in Hawaii. At least, my kid did.

Sounds like he wants a warm weather vacation, but Vancouver/Whistler/BC are awesome.

Also, definitely dont go to HI. Its rainy season and the kids wont be able to tell the difference between one beach and another at their age.

And for the record, I dont hate kids. Just think theyre a bit overrated (although there is no way I can rightfully have this opinion according to some). Also, I wear ear phones or plugs on planes, so I wont know theyre flying unless they kick my seat.

I like Jerrys idea of pawning the kids off on their grandparents while you and wifey enjoy an adult vacation.

He had mentioned Europe, where it likely going to be cold in winter. Just trying to save him 20+ hrs of flying

.

Have you ever had to bury one?

Because, if not, STFU.

Just when everything was looking great for my life, I had to.

I hope I never have to go through that again. It was awful.

But, the Little bastard was starting to stink horribly.

If you guys like to ski that is a good idea with young kids. They like snow in small batches, until they get cold and wet and cry. So take them sledding a little, build a snowman, go in by the fire, then leave them with someone while you guys ski.
