How do I stop getting email updates?

I tinkered with my email setting 2 days ago and since then, my inbox has been flooded with notifications to new threads. I have since changed my account to have no email updates, but it still occurs. Any advice would be helpful.

A few steps:

 

1. my controls-email settings-uncheck "Enable 'Email Notification' by default?"

 

2. In the left menu toolbar, click "view topics" which is under "subscriptions"

 

3. Unsubscribe to any threads currently listed.
