Olympics start Thursday/Friday - does anyone give a chit?

Recommended Posts

So bummed that NHL players arent partaking in the hockey this year. Im usually pumped as hell about that. This year, meh

I am probably in the minority, but I liked it better when the NHL players were not playing in the Olympics...

Some people feel like that the same way they dont like seeing NBA players in the Summer Olympics. I get that.

But in the olympics I wanna see the best in the world go against each other. And like it or not, you need NHL and NBA players to participate to see that.

Im a big olympics fan.....i dont gravitate toward the winter olympics as much because IMO too many events are judged, not won on time or score.

Appreciate the skill the skaters have ...but shiit...like i have any idea how they score anything. Also i wanna bang tara lipinski.

I've said for a long time I can't believe they still have this. First, the corruption is so egregious. The amount of money that changes hands to get the ioc to sign off on a particular City is off the charts.

Second, they build these Olympic Villages that immediately go into disrepair. Seriously, go back and look at articles on Sochi. It's already falling apart. And Putin spent a trillion dollars building it. Of course, most of that money went to his oligarch Buddies. But that's another story.

Brazil? One of their greatest Financial crises ever? And they damn near literally bulldozed homeless poor people into the ocean just to get rid of them.

Think about it, Europe is going through the greatest human crisis since World War II. They didn't have better use for the money they've spent on the Olympics in the last decade or so?

We've got 50,000 American lives literally feet away from landmines to protect South Korea because they allegedly can't protect themselves? But they can spend a trillion dollars on the Olympics?

Here's a thought you little zipper heads. Don't build the luge run and send one of our divisions home.

And, by the way? Look at all these chicks who testified against Larry Nassar. You know what a bronze medal and $7 get you? A cup of coffee at Starbucks and an hour of your pay at whatever job you land after the Olympics.

Seriously, I get it if you are a curler from Burkina Faso.

For fucksake, your country is going to last as long as yogurt in the desert. You need something to give you a little bit of national identity and pride.

But we've been to the Moon. Repeatedly. Hell, we got so bored, we even brought a car up there. Like we really had to get somewhere faster - on the moon.

We stopped going to the Moon because it was boring. You? Are still working on that whole not having sewage running through your streets thing.

So I guess getting yourself a medal or something you can hang on your refrigerator mean something to you. But we won two world wars, went to the Moon and invented the internet. And then we invented the internet porn.

You know how they have the Paralympics for crippled athletes? Maybe we should just have the Olympics for crippled shiithole countries. They seem to really need it more than we do.

I love watching the athletes from tiny sh!thole countries.

I remember one cross country skier that seemed to keep getting lost

I remember a swimmer from some African country. The only swimming pool in his country was at a holiday in. Thats where he trained. He had never been in an Olympic sized pool until the Olympics.

The other swimmers were back at the other end checking their times before he made the turn. I seriously thought the dude might drown.

I agree..Someone somewhere said build the damn olympic village in Athens and have it there every 4 years. Each country can contribute some $$ to keep it in good repair and build new stuff as needed etc. I would have no issue with this. They can even have it "represent" any country each time, so they can be responsible for the opening and closing ceremonies etc. Easy fix.

I like the Olympics but it'll be tough to get into them this year with all the craziness in the home situation with my MiL in the hospital.

I made the mistake of watching some curling during the Olympic qualifying, and it was awesome. I'm officially into it.

Tweet says speedskater Shani Davis upset with selection of U.S. flag bearer for Olympics

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/winter-olympics-2018/2018/02/08/tweet-says-speedskater-shani-davis-upset-selection-u-s-flag-bearer-olympics/318701002/

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea – The United States Olympic team’s selection of flag bearer for Friday’s Opening Ceremony sparked controversy on Thursday night, as a tweet from the account of long-track speedskater Shani Davis angrily attacked the method used, even suggesting there could have been a racial element involved.

Davis, a four-time Olympic medalist and five-time Olympian, was picked by U.S. Speedskating as its candidate for flag bearer. However, in a vote among team representatives from each U.S. Winter Games federation, the 35-year-old tied with luge athlete Erin Hamlin. Her bronze at Sochi 2014 was the first medal for an American in singles luge in Olympic history.

A coin toss was then used to break the tie, which Hamlin won.

The tweet included a reference to Black History Month and listed his Olympic accomplishments:

"I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event. @TeamUSA dishonorably tossed a coin to decide its 2018 flag bearer, No problem. I can wait until 2022. #BlackHistoryMonth2018 #Pyeongchang2018.”

Davis became the first black athlete to win a gold medal in an individual event at the Winter Olympics when he placed first in the 1,000 meters at Torino in 2006.

U.S. Speedskating communications director Matt Whewell did not comment on Davis’ tweet, but spoke to the skater’s impressive Games track record.

"He was our nominee for a reason," Whewell told USA TODAY Sports. "He was deserving of that honor."

The United States Olympic Committee does not exercise control over social media posts made by athletes on the team, and Davis’ message was still on his account more than three hours after its initial posting.

USOC spokesman Mark Jones said of Hamlin’s selection: "It is an athlete-driven process and the selection was made between two great candidates."

During the selection meeting, each of the eight sporting federations nominated an athlete for consideration to carry the flag into the stadium on Friday. Federations cannot vote for their own nominee in the first round but are permitted to is subsequent rounds. Voting is done by one athlete from each of the governing bodies, and Olympic veteran Jonathan Garcia was the speedskating representative.

After a few rounds, the vote was tied 4-4 between Davis and Hamlin. The USOC’s official procedure, determined last year and communicated to athletes, dictated that a coin flip must be used to break the tie.

Now coins are racist...

The US womens champion (Bradie Tennell) skates out of the same rink that I play in a adult hockey league. I've seen her a few times at the rink on Saturday mornings. Sub par for figure a figure skater in the looks department. Doesn't have the great a$$ of most figure skaters either. A cup.

I have not been following the Russian olympic stuff. If their figure skaters are banned then she may have a shot at the Gold.

Only figure skating and and a couple of snow boarding and free style skiing events are judged. The vast majority are not judged.
