Deputies arrest protester who helped pull down Durham Confederate statue

DURHAM, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Durham County sheriff's deputies arrested a woman who said she took part in toppling the Confederate statue in downtown Durham. More arrests are expected.

Takiyah Thompson, 22, was taken into custody shortly after protesters held a news conference Tuesday afternoon at North Carolina Central University. Thompson climbed a ladder to the top of the statue to tie a rope around its neck before the crowd tore it down

Thompson is charged with:

--disorderly conduct by injury to a statue (Class II Misdemeanor)

--damage to real property (statue as a fixture (Class I Misdemeanor)

--participation in a riot with property damage in excess of $1,500 (Class H Felony)

--inciting others to riot where there is property damage in excess of $1,500 (Class F Felony)

The protesters who took part in toppling Confederate statue in Durham on Monday held the news conference Tuesday to call for the dropping of any charges related to the incident.

"The people decided to take matters into our own hands and remove the statue," said Thompson, a member of the far-left Workers World Party and a student at N.C. Central University. "We are tired of waiting on politicians who could have voted to remove the white supremacist statues years ago, but they failed to act. So we acted."

The protesters called for the Durham County Commissioners, the Durham Sheriff's office and District Attorney's office to drop the charges on all protesters involved with the Durham incident and also called on the City of Charlottesville to drop charges against anti-racist protesters from August 12.

Durham County officials called for a "respectful and productive" dialogue on race issues Tuesday following the destruction of a Confederate monument outside the old courthouse in downtown Durham.

On Tuesday, Durham city council member Jillian Johnson responded to Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews' call for city and county leaders to help create guidelines for peaceful demonstrations.

"I'm unlikely to support any city or county regulations that restrict the rights of free speech and free assembly for demonstrators," Johnson said.

At a news conference, Durham County manager Wendell Davis called pulling the statue down "unlawful and inappropriate."

As the state has a law mandating the protection of Confederate monuments, Davis said county officials will be consulting with state officials about what to do with the heavily damaged monument.

The statue was pulled down by a group of demonstrators Monday evening. A woman climbed a ladder and put a nylon rope around it while others pulled.

Thompson, in an interview with ABC11 on Tuesday, admitted her involvement.

"I feel like it's important to tear down these vestiges of white supremacy," Thompson.

Congressman GK Butterfield said though he didn't condone the actions of the protesters, but understood their motives.

"I don't condone the destruction of government property, but I understand the hurt and pain the continued existence of Confederate monuments cause to many in our communities, whether it is on the grounds of the US Capitol, state capitals, or any other locations," Butterfield said.

Also at Tuesday's news conference, Andrews addressed criticism that his officers did not intervene as the statue was pulled down. He said using pepper spray was considered, but leaders decided on restraint to avoid injuries and further chaos.

"Don't mistake restraint for inaction. If I had my deputies to engage a hostile crowd, there would have been injuries," he said.

He also said people seen in the video will be arrested.

"Last night we witnessed a blatant violation of the law. No one is getting away with damaging the Confederate statue. We will pursue felony charges," he said.

The monument of a Confederate soldier holding a rifle was erected in 1924 and inscribed on it are the words "in memory of the boys who wore the gray."

The statue is one of dozens across North Carolina and one of about 1,500 public displays across the country dedicated to the Confederacy.

Ta da! Just like I said. Perpetrators would be punished by law and there were no riots or fights or tasers or clubbing or shootings. I am getting tired of being right all the damn time

I would like some credit as well since I agreed. In fact, I went so far as to say we don't need any police. Instead of preventing crimes, we'll just punish the perp after the fact.

Woot!

More arrested in toppling of Confederate statue in North Carolina

Three more protesters were arrested Wednesday for participating in the toppling of a nearly century-old statue of a Confederate soldier in North Carolina.

Dante Strobino, 35, and Ngoc Loan Tran, 24, were arrested when they attended a court hearing for another woman who was charged Tuesday for climbing a ladder to attach a rope to the bronze soldier. Peter Gilbert, 39, was arrested later Wednesday afternoon.

The Durham County Sheriff’s office said the three arrested Wednesday were charged with two felonies related to inciting and participating in a riot that damaged property.

The woman who climbed the ladder, Takiyah Thompson, was charged with the same counts a day before. She is a student at historically black North Carolina Central University.

The three are affiliated with the Workers World Party, which helped organize the Durham protest in response to deadly violence over the weekend during a white nationalist rally Charlottesville, Virginia.

The North Carolina statue, which was dedicated in 1924, was brought down after Thompson allegedly climbed up and attached a rope. Demonstrators then pulled down it down.

Seconds after the monument fell, protesters began kicking the crumpled bronze monument.

"I’m tired of white supremacy keeping its foot on my neck and the necks of people who look like me," Thompson said at a news conference. "That statue glorifies the conditions that oppressed people live in, and it had to go."

The Durham protest was in response to a white nationalist rally held in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend, which lead to three deaths. Although the violence in Virginia has prompted fresh talk by government officials about bringing down symbols of the Confederacy around the South, North Carolina has a law protecting them, according to The Associated Press. The 2015 law prevents removing such monuments on public property without permission from state officials.

Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said Tuesday that his deputies were working to identify others involved in the incident and plan to pursue felony charges against them.

Late Tuesday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper called for the removal of any remaining Confederate monuments on state property, directing state officials to study the cost and logistics of moving them to historical sites or museums.

"We cannot continue to glorify a war against the United States of America fought in the defense of slavery," Cooper said in a statement. "These monuments should come down."

Looks like the idiots that pulled down the Durham statue are getting off without any charges... So if you don't like something, destroy it, you won't get prosecuted...

http://www.wral.com/durham-da-drops-charges-in-confederate-monument-toppling-case/17357447/

One day after a judge tossed charges against two suspects accused of toppling a Confederate monument last summer and found a third defendant not guilty, Durham County prosecutors on Tuesday announced that they were dropping all charges against the remaining five suspects.

District Attorney Roger Echols did not take questions after a terse statement in which he essentially said it did not make sense to pursue charges against the remaining suspects given that District Court Judge Frederick S. Battaglia Jr. on Monday found one suspect not guilty and dismissed charges against two others.

"I do believe the evidence supported the misdemeanor charges, and we proceeded on those charges," Echols said. "Acts of vandalism, regardless of noble intent, are still violations of law.

But Echols added that it would not be productive to pursue charges against the remaining five defendants given that prosecutors' evidence for them was similar to that presented during Monday's trials. The remaining defendants had been scheduled to return to court in April for their day in court. 2

"For my office to continue to take these cases to trial based on the same evidence would be a misuse of state resources," Echols said. "For that reason, I will dismiss the remaining charges against the remaining defendants."

On Monday, Battaglia dismissed charges against Dante Emmanuel Strobino, 35, and Peter Hull Gilbert, 39, saying prosecutors had not proven that they were among those involved in knocking the statue over. Another defendant, Raul Jimenez, was acquitted after a trial that lasted several hours and stretched into the evening.

The five remaining defendants in the case were: Takiyah Fatima Thompson, who climbed the statue and was the first to be arrested; Elena Everett, 36; Jessica Nicole Jude; Qasima Wideman; and Joseph Karlik

Echols added that charges would also be dropped against another defendant who had previously agreed to a plea deal.

"This concludes the criminal prosecution of the individuals charged in the Aug. 14 destruction of a Confederate monument in Durham County," said Echols, who declined to take questions from reporters after the news conference.

The Confederate statue was knocked down by protestors who said it represented a symbol of white supremacy.

The rally in Durham occurred on the heels of a violent clash in Charlottesville, Va., that generated national headlines when white nationalists and counterprotesters clashed over the removal of Confederate monuments. During that incident, a 32-year-old woman was killed and as many as 34 people were hurt.

The shock and grief from that protest migrated to Durham, when demonstrators toppled a longstanding shrine to fallen Confederate soldiers outside the former county courthouse.

Joe Rogan lol

I'm guessing you didn't listen. Joe Rogan barely talks, and it's not a pro-hillary hump fest. Jimmy Dore does most of the talking and makes some really good points about both the left and right.

But please, troll on as trolls do.
