Patriots trade Jimmy Garoppolo to 49ers

Recommended Posts

Per Adam Schefter...

Major QB shakeup: 49ers trading 2018 2nd-round draft pick to New England for Patriots’ QB Jimmy Garoppolo, sources tell ESPN.

:shocking: I guess Kirk Cousins just lost his 2018 home.

Jets or Browns will make room for him.

That will basically be a 1st round pick

well no, it will be mid-way between a 1st and 2nd round pick.

I thought next year was supposed to be a good QB draft? No? Aren't the 49ers probably going to pick top 2 or 3? Of course, I think they are the best of the worst this year. Maybe they just want to work on grooming their new QB for next year's offense. See if he is an actual future starter, then pick O-Line in the draft if they like him. Who is NEs backup now?

Bet there was a wink-wink nod-nod for 49ers to cut Hoyer and Pats sign him for vet minimum.

2nd round pick doesn't have a 5th year option.

That matters to teams.

Brady will play until he is at least 50. Don’t need no stinking backup. I think rumor is Jeff George is waiting by his phone if needed.

Wait. The Pats literally have no other QB's on roster besides Brady now, right? :shocking: :dunno:

Only Brady matter for the organization anyway, since their aspiration is Champion only. If they need a backup for fillin, they could just sign someone like Hoyer.

you know they are on a bye? Hoyer will be in town this week you can count on that, or maybe someone off a practice squad

Meh. He was drafted in the second round, pick 62, and has 3 years of maturation, but he's only started ALL OF TWO games! In three years! And people wet themselves over him because he's associated with Brady and the Pats and even Romo. Whatever.

The Pats used pick 62, sat on it for 3 years, and got back a high second next year. Good for the Pats. Could be good for the Niners. Could also be Matt Flynn 2.0.

He's not a huge guy - 6-2, 225 - and doesn't have much NFL game experience and came from a small school. That's a lot of unknown. But, I guess SF has a lot of picks so what's a dart throw, right?

Hes played very well when given the chance. In real games (not preseason crap).

But he did get hurt quickly. Id say thats the major red flag right now. Of course it couldve just been chance. With such a small sample size we cant really know.

Broncos need a QB too. (Kirk Cousins)

Don't forget the Giants. There are a bunch of teams that could use him.

Cap situation is going to limit which teams are in the running. I don't know every teams, but I'd assume Denver and the giants have too much tied in their ds to be top contenders

Another fleecing for a patriots hyped backup, another fail coming. Patriots laugh all the way to the bank whenever this happens. Not one has been anything of note.

it's not a fleecing when they invested a 2nd rd pick in the guy.

turning 7th rd pick cassel into a trade is fleecing, but they essentially just traded their 2014 2nd rd pick for a 2018 2nd rd pick. not that exciting, especially considering they could have just taken Jarvis Landry or Preston Brown with the same pick, and gotten 4 years of production from them.

Well they traded in their 2014 Sedan and got the same as they paid for it, so its a good deal.

I don't choose to look at it that way, but to each his own.

Just imagine Jarvis Landry on NE; that's what they could have had the past 4 years. But instead they tried to get cute in my opinion.

Not a very good analogy.

Garropolo spent three years learning from the best.

A three year old sedan is just three years old with more miles on it and that much closer to major servicing.

So did Hundley and we see how thats working out. Learning amounts to a hill of beans compared to playing. But he has made some starts, I see your point, I can get behind that.

I think all he's saying is a lot of us thought Kirk Cousins would be signed by the 49ers next offseason, but with the trade for Garropollo, Kirk Cousins to the 49ers is now very unlikely.

Hmmm, will there be an offer on the table with Martavis for a NE *first rounder next year?

* they have 2 seconds and they don't like to pay first round prices

You think he would have helped them win a super bowl or two?

He would have been just another wr that post a few really good games a season like the other wr on the Patriots not named R Moss.

God no. I mean literally no chance in hell. Pats wouldn't take him for free.

feel free to swap out another player for Landry if you want; it was a very deep draft in 2014. I just happen to think Landry on the Pats could be one of the best in the league, but they have done a good job of making due with WRs.

But that pick also could have been Preston Brown, CJ Fiedorowicz, Morgan Moses, Charles Sims, Christian Kirksey, Jay Bromley, Travis Swanson, Chris Borland, Gabe Jackson...all those guys would be key contributors.

I just don't agree with this narrative that NE makes great value on these QB trades, because they've wasted alot of draft capital trying to recreate Matt Cassel. Since Brady was drafted, they've spent

*2nd rd pick on Garappolo

*3rd rd picks on Ryan Mallett, Jacoby Brissett and Kevin O'Connell

*4th rd pick on Rohan Davey

*6th rd pick on Kliff Kingsbury

It's not good value for a guy that is just sitting on your bench, and even if you can trade them years down the line you never even get remotely good value in comparison to what you could have just taken with the pick anyway.

Plus the best options they've had other than Brady have been 7th rd pick Matt Cassel and UDFA Brian Hoyer, so why spend top draft capital if you've shown ability to develop lesser prospects?

Incidentally, they never won a super bowl with randy. Despite winning a bunch before and after him

Nailed it :D

Free agent QB Brian Hoyer is visiting the Patriots on Wednesday.

Hoyer, of course, began his career in New England as a Tom Brady backup. New England traded No. 2 QB Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers on Monday, costing Hoyer his job. Hoyer was actually originally part of the trade coming back to the Patriots, but the money was an issue. He's fully expected to sign with the Patriots on Wednesday and slide in as Brady's rest-of-season backup.
