Question for Geek Parents

Recommended Posts

Hey geek parents. So, we got my 7 y/o her first library card yesterday. Shes always been an avid reader, but checked out books under our card, prior to today. As part of this milestone, we let her pick whatever book she wanted from the youth section. Well, she went and picked The Diary of Anne Frank, because she wanted to read a true story. Shes already 30 pages deep in one day. A part of me is very proud that she can read at this level, but Im also concerned the subject matter is a bit too much for her. Shes asking lots of questions about WW2, why people didnt like the Jews, etc. What do you guys think about this?

I think its fine. You should read it along with her and talk to her about it, like a dad daughter book club.

This.

Think thats great for her and you for her to read and discuss. The moments you have things you can share andn talk through are too few and far between.

And then convince her it never happened so she can be one of those people. :)

MDCs idea is great. Or just talk to her each day or every couple of days about it and see how she is handling the topic and what is coming my up.

Only you can really knownof she can handle it all. Can be a great teaching moment.

If you really want to teach her about the horrors of the world, and introduce her to some of the worlds worst human beings.....just get her a handle on here and turn her loose.

MDCs idea is great. And just reaffirm for her to come to you with any questions that might come up and not trust what her schoolmates tell her.

Thats a great idea. Thanks MDC. Im going to grab a copy this afternoon. Ive actually never read it myself. She got her love of reading from my wife. I read maybe one or two books a year. My wife and daughter read for a couple hours every day.

Like one of my favorite things in the summer to do is to sit outside on the porch with my daughter while she reads.

I read for a little bit and then I watch violent hardcore rape pornography.

Together time is the best

Slip in a beasto porn once in a while. Not enough to become dependent on it of course.

You might have a prodigy on your hands if she is reading and comprehending that at 7 years old. That's remarkable.

Never too young to instill lessons of reality and history in a youth. If she can read it and comprehend it, she should learn about it.

you may want to try to be a chapter or two ahead of her to see where the content is going and if she needs any filtration or screening. Holocaust is not peter rabbit.

might create a distrust for authority (which may be somewhat healthy in the future)

Especially when she finds out that the Holocaust is a hoax

Thats a good idea. And thats my concern. Learning about history is important, but the subject matter is so heavy. Im pretty sure she just picked it because it was a diary, and she has her own, as any young girl would. We briefly explained it was a serious book about a girl who lived through a war, but Im not sure if she can properly comprehend it. Shes already reading it, so I want to make it a valuable learning experience.

so you have a little mobb. her country of origin blames millions of legal mobbs for the problems of the country and wants to take all of their possession, not just want them out of their country, but to exterminate them. little mobb and family go into hiding while many friends and family are trained off never to be seen or heard from again....at the hands of current police and army.

Be sure to let her know the diary is made up by her Jew father to make money.

I heard this when it originally aired. I had to pull my car over to the side of the road; I was laughing so hard I was a danger to myself and other drivers.

As I recall from when we read it in school, there are a couple of sexy scenes in there. Fantasies and such mostly. Might want to look into that. She may have questions you dont anticipate.

That stuff will go over her head anyway. Just like how we would watch movies as kids and not get the jokes til years later.

7 years old is too young in my opinion. Anyone advocating for a 7 year old to read this has never read it themselves. Or is warped.

Ive been thumbing through it and I agree. Ive ordered her an abridged version. Shes too young for some of this content.

That seems like a decent compromise.

I'd be fine with it as long as she is able to comprehend it. Which is your job, not a teachers to determine at such a young age. I'm guessing she's in second grade? Do you bring her to museums or read her higher level literature? Who's her influence? You? A librarian that sees her comprehensive ability?

The great thing about young kids is they ask a lot of questions about everything. And the greatest thing about raising kids who think about the answers they get understand.

The Newberry award winning books is where she should start. The 70's ones in my opinion. The Black Pearl is a great one. There are many others. Go that route.

I must have read Where the Red Fern Grows 30 times as a kid. That bested me up everytime.

Spoiler

Of course, that was about two really great dogs dying. Not a bunch of fictional whiny Jews.

It is worth noting that I cried at the end of Marley and Me but not at Schindler's List. I'm just saying.
