A lot of more mainstream Christian fundie churches get bent out of shape, are unconvinced, or outright hostile on issues surrounding gay rights. In turn, liberal gay rights supporters will bash them regularly on it. A big cultural cat fight.

 

But then these same liberals willing to go to the mat with fundie Christians on each and every social issues will go out of their way to not appear Islamophobic. They offer Islam smiles and understanding and a big multicultural hug. In fact even mainstream Muslim mosques are way, way, significantly more conservative than most any Christian churches on pretty much all social issues, not just gay rights but abortion, women's rights, criminal rights, human rights etc.

 

Liberals are too inclusive and culturally sensitive to minority rights that they just STFU on all these other issues they care about, so they back off and leave the heavy lifting of criticizing Islam to the social conservatives.
