I bought the Orbi package with the base and two satellites. Tried Luma and Linksys prior; had trouble with both systems recognizing nodes and seamlessly speaking back and forth, so I returned them both. I have ~6,300sq ft on three floors, and I have the main on the one side of the main floor (office), a satellite on the opposite side of the main floor, and the third in the lower level in the middle. My home is wider than it is deep, so the two on the main floor are ~70' apart I would guess, and the lower is right in the middle, but down a level. I was motivated to go this route because I was losing signal when mowing the lawn/snow-plowing - so my satellites are biased in the rear of my home and garage side. I also didn't know that my old WIFI extender wouldn't seamlessly hand off devices back and forth with the main router, so when I first added the _EXT, I was disappointed to find out I had to manually change my network to the _EXT in order to keep going. I don't know much about their mesh systems, but I've been trying to iron out problems with a WDS system I purchased from them for our RV park for a year without a lot of luck. It is a fairly involved system and I know just enough to be dangerous, but their customer service was the sh!ts. They gave me contradictory information which resulted in me ordering some wrong hardware, then they just punted me to a reseller but he didn't want to help me since I had already bought most of my hardware directly from Engenius. I had set up an older netgear or linksys router and 1 range extender in my parents house for them and they have very good coverage all over the house. they dont have a mansion, its a wealthy town in northern NJ with older, medium sized homes where all the neighboring homes are close together, so 1 extender was good enough. I guess my question would be what makes these "bundles" better than that type of setup? is it just a sleek design playing on the smart home fad because you can put an app on your phone? the idea that they all look the same and you can put cool little pods around the house and feel like youre gaining more wifi coverage even if you don't need any more? Even if they do communicate with each other in a more efficient manner, is it noticeable to someone whose had no issues with standard router and range extender? Our place is about 2500 sqft, but an older home where the walls can prohibit wifi. i have an extender that does not work well in this house. my speed tests have been clocking in around 175 vs the 45 pre-mesh. range is great.... no impact when i am outside. if someone can get by with and extender, or wiring their home go for it. this was not a huge cost, and i can take it with me hen i move and can add hubs (access points) in the future if needed. edit: if someone is not having issues, then there really is no need... but they can still get a significant boost. i have been flying while surfing tonight. i also wanted to ensure solid connections for work. also, our streaming was pretty crappy... very smooth now.
