One-third of Americans are paying for subscriptions without knowing it

Recommended Posts

Remember the last time you realized you were charged for something only after looking at your credit card bill? Well, you’re not alone.
Thirty-five percent of Americans say they signed up for a subscription or membership, such as a gym, that enrolled them in an automatic payment plan without even realizing it, according to a new survey of 1,002 adults by CreditCards.com.
Many businesses, from media to online retailers, offer free trials to people who provide their credit card information. But when the free lunch comes to an end, it’s easy for people to forget to cancel it in time even if they don’t want to continue the service.
The survey found that Gen-Xers (44%) and millennials (37%) were most likely to accidentally sign up for automatic payments. Meanwhile, the Silent Generation (age 72 and older) were more likely than any other age group to say they had never signed up for automatic payments without knowing it.

Scumbag companies that sneak in the recurring subscription.

Umm...I've never once signed up for something that took a payment method where I didn't understand the auto-renew and/or billing charge when the free trail expired.

A fool and his money...

A girl came to my door for the Sierra Club. She wanted me to get into a monthly auto-donate. I said I'll give you $50 right now. She looked at me like I was nuts.

I know for sure they get you on stuff like Telephone Reverse Lookup crap. I admit I fell victim to it.

But it wasn't so much I naively entered into the contract, I just simply forgot to cancel my subscription before the trial period ended - as I'm sure is the case with a lot of these... Got me for a $29.99 monthly fee.

In the early days of the internet I saw a trailer for bangbus and I had to see this big titted Latina get banged. I had to call my cc company to get it stopped.

What I got out of the article is that every generation of consumers are getting dumber and more complacent.

Is it our parents fault?

The Baby Boomer?

Bush?

Trump?

Now see? There is a guy that can admit the truth.

I too had to suck it up and proudly admit my shame and call one of those companies to stop charging me.

They don't make it easy and let you do it online :nono:

I had a subscription to Rodney Moore.

Was this ugly dude that paid chicks to fock him on camera. CHicks were no prizes really either.

I was like 21 or something. Not sure why I was infatuated by this dude. I think I used to say "if that ugly focker can get laid, so can I"

I've had it done. Hell had Starz and Cinemax charge my card recently when I don't even have subscriptions to them. Apparently my dad accidentally clicked on the app on the fire stick I gave him that has kodi on it so it's been charging my card monthly for them

When the cc company told me it wouldn't take affect till the next billing cycle I went on a downloading frenzy. Good thing I lived alone and was sans girlfriend at the time.

God the memories. Remember AdultPass or whatever it was called? You had to pay for a password to access a website with nudes. Almost all pics, cause we only had 14.4K modems back then.

EVERY successful business should have some kind of subscription based service. Easy money.

I have no problem with subscription for certain services.

But the "free trial that goes forever unless you call and cancel" bullshit is unethical.

About a year ago, I bought an app for writers. A kind of souped up word processor. Paid $30.

Now they are going to a subscription model. I told them to Fock off. Judging from the reviews on the App Store, so did most of their customers. Their competitor is non subscription based and can import your work no problem.

Oh I agree absolutely and I wasn't saying change the entire business model so it is subscription based. Where I work, I created a "VIP" section for our customers for $1 a month. All I do is give them the occasional discount code or some promo items. Just grabbing the low hanging fruit.

Hmm, just off the top of my head if you wanted to make it interesting and you would have to get the numbers right so you didn't lose profit. But you could charge $xxx.xx a month to whoever subscribes to this service and if the price of steel goes down or up the consumer would be locked into that months low or the 60 day low etcetera.
