I go back and forth of par 5s whether I blast the 3w and have a half shot wedge or I lay up to a distance. More often than not I blast away, but when you muff the chip it drives you nuts

It's pretty rare for me to muff a chip. In all 3 cases, I think I was flustered by what had just happened. It was lame.

When I'm not playing confident I'll decelerate on chips which is the worst thing you can do

Shot 81 over the weekend. I have been playing well on the front then just giving it away on the back. Well we played the back first that day and I shot 44. I make the turn and shoot 37 on the front. So maybe it isn't choking and maybe it is just that the back side is tougher and I do not play it well.

75% of the time I'll put it closer with a full wedge yardage and at times I'll top or pull the 3w into trouble. I've resigned myself that unless it's sitting up with little or no trouble, I'll lay up.

When I'm not playing confident I'll decelerate on chips which is the worst thing you can do

I try and picture the face of a clock while I'm chipping. If I take it back to 7 oclock, I must go through to at least 5 oclock. Back to 8 through to at least 4 and so forth. Helps making sure you'll accelerate through the ball.

I generally take out a long iron and lay up. Unless it is a really short par 5, as of now I am more likely to knock it up in front of the green and try to assure a birdie putt and a routine par. I carry a 5 wood and no hybrids. The likelihood that I hit it correct and then find and stay on the green are slim. Most of the greens I play are tough if you are over the green. So I just see no reason to go for it.

As for trying to get it up close or lay up to a distance....I would much rather be as close as possible. I like 100-105 yards. I'm not bad from there. But there is no way on earth that I on average hit it closer from 100 than say 40. No chance. 40 yards is a little pitch. I really never understood why those types shots were so tough for ams. It is pitch shots you would hit in your backyard. Those are the most fun shots to hit in golf IMO

The dreaded "hit my buddies driver" curse.. I've been tinkering with the idea of getting a new one - my gamer is just too erratic and hook friendly.. Hit and played (for 9 holes) my buddies Titleist D17 D2, 9.5* - damn, what a club. It wasn't so much the club itself as it was the shaft: Oban Devotion HB, 4 flex... What a great combination for my swing.. Although it's about 10 yards shorter than my gamer, it's totally dialed in for consistency and fairways - not to mention it all but rids the hook snap for me.

And I'll be damn if the shaft alone isn't $190.

I have the Oban Kiyoshi (purple) on my ping G30... the shaft is [lisp] amazing [/lisp]... IMO the head doesn't matter nearly as much as the right shaft. G30 isn't the longest, but it has to be right up there as the most forgiving driver on the market. Superb off center. I got fitted for it, and the driver cost more than the rest of my bag....

No doubt I'm the only one watching the women's British Open...... But if you get a chance, stop down for a few holes this weekend - just to see the golf course.

They are playing Kingsbarns - an absolute stunning layout right along the Eastern coast of Fife, about 20 miles dow the road from the Old Course.

Opened in 2000, it's a newborn compared to the storied layouts surrounding her - but incredible all the same.

I played Eastward Ho yesterday. Incredible course on the cape in Chatham right on pleasant bay. May be the toughest course I've played. Just brutal with the elevation changes and the wind. Played the back nine 41, front 9 we started on hole 6 and I was 7 over by the turn, ended up with a 46 on that one. First hole we played was blind shots and I was trying hero approaches out of thick fescue, got in my head for a few holes before I settled down.

Happy to break 90 there

It's the nicest golf course on cape cod, real blue blood stuff. Everyone walking out of the clubhouse looks like Donald trump and they drive up their rolls royce's and classic cars and park them out front. I'm not a big fan of snobbery or elitism, it's a little bit of an eye roll and the braggart stuff

Says it's a links course but there are very few holes without elevated greens and false fronts. Greens are like concrete, breathe too hard on a putt and it will roll right off the green

Damn, that's incredible.. Do you know a member? I bet that initiation is out the ass.

Ya, I played in a member guest tourney. I'm guessing initiation is 6 figures, but the waiting list is so long, wouldn't find out

Shot 76 (Par 70) ON U.S. Open qualifier course. Small, elevated and slick greens.

Played from members tees at around 6000 yrs.

The slope was 123. Been playing for 40 yrs and have no idea what the slope rating as measurement of difficulty means.

Played below my 7 hdcp vs my home courses 116 slope.

After testing several drivers, bought a new stick: Ping G, LS Tech, 9* (I cut down to 44.5")

Played all of 2 rounds with it and a few range sessions - have mixed emotions... The LS Tech is one of 3 drivers in the G series, this is the low spinning model. Ping achieved this by moving the CG a mm or so towards the face. In theory this is supposed to lower your spin rate, the trade off being a lack of forgiveness.

Pros

* One of the most forgiving drivers I've ever hit. I know this is supposed to be the least of the 3, but even still - this thing comes off like butter.

* This thing is hot.. The ball explodes off the face - way more so than the Titleist 917 and TM M1 I hit and way more than the TM Aeroburner I was playing.

* At 9* my all flight was noticeable lower, which makes sense. I'm actually playing it at 9.6* which I adjusted it to with the wrench.

* Did I already mention? This thing is long.. I hit it 290 right down gut Sunday on #1. Even with 25 yards of roll, that's not my normal game... More impressive to me, I hit a couple 250 into the wind the day before.

Cons

* The LS Tech's face is 1* open at address.. Why? I have no idea other than to promote a fade bias.. I have actually been searching for a fade tee ball and this ultimately could be a good thing. But for the time being, it's really playing mind games with my head. I'm basically learning all over again - which is sort of fun.. More than anything, when nutted, you get a gentle soft butter fade, almost straight.

* See above, I simply have not been able to draw this driver - which was my normal ball flight. I find myself not even sure how to set up at times... From reviews I've read, others have had the same problem drawing this stick.

* Ping did say by adjusting my loft +.6* that I closed my face a smidge.. I'm not feeling it, but that did come from them.

* Stock shaft... Got the Alta 55, Stiff.. Which is nice for a stock shaft, but I will be looking to replace it.

* If you don't' have a swing speed over a 100, this model is not for you. Mine ranges between 101-105, so I generate enough lift on my own... Get the regular G model if yours is slower (bcoz you need spin for lift).

Going to give it a month or so.. Just on the feel and distance alone, I'm eager to work with it and see how it goes.

I'd look into swapping the shaft. I didn't like the stock stiff shafts in the g30 driver and G 3W... however i really like the stiff shaft in the G 3H... won't change that one, but went oban kiyoshi purple in the driver and Tour AD-DI for the 3W, both work great with my swing.

Thing about testing in places like this though, you are at the mercy of stock shafts. So you're not exactly getting fitted, but you do get to test the clubs and you can use their simulators for data readings... There are places you can go to get shaft fitted. I have a pretty good grasp on that end of it, so I've never actually been.

Besides matching the flex to my swing speed and cutting the length down, I've never ventured away from the stock shafts. I'm likely a year away from Driver shopping, but when it comes to finding a shaft optimized for my game, I wouldn't even know where to start.

...but when it comes to finding a shaft optimized for my game, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Things about stock shafts, there's no 1 universal, specification system in the industry.... Aldila specs for a Stiff shaft may differ greatly from Diamana. A Fujikura Regular shaft may be a Senior flex in Matrix Ozik shafts... Then there's the disparity within the different model shafts of a company... Graphite Design has a gazillion shafts on the market, each with their own varying characteristics.

4 most important things to know about a shaft:

* Kick/bend point

* Weight

* Torque rating

* Flex (and really, this is by far the least important of the bunch)

All I care about is that it is stiff and has the correct kick point. Weight doesnt matter much too me as long as it isnt extreme either way.

Still experimenting for a new shaft.. Came across this article over the weekend... Never actually thought about this part of it, but damn good advice - doesn't have to be rocket science.

If you have a nice arcing trajectory and the angle of descent of your drives is under 40 degrees, you are golden and never have to look at a spin number on a launch monitor ever again.”

My decent angle averages about 37 - was happy to find that out.

Shot a smooth 88 yesterday and by smooth I mean I had 1 birdie, 6 pars, 3 doubles and a quad.

Never played the course before. Lots of undulation on fairways. Beautiful but some strange holes lot of blind shots. Super slow uphill putts, super slick downhill.

We just had ours.. I couldn't make it, but yea they are a blast for sure.

You can really cash in the Calcutta too.. We had 1 guy buy his entire team, won the Championship flight and won damn near all the Day money - he raked about $11k. :o

Played Tour 18 this weekend. For those that don't know, they take 18 famous holes and mimic them......I feel like the round really fell off track when I made a 10 on the 4th (Crooked Stick #15). I birdied the same hole 2 weeks ago. :dunno: Parred Sawgrass #17. Went bogey, bogey, par on Amen Corner......and other stuff.

I've actually been hitting the irons very well, but I've been popping up my driver. I slowly half fixed it throughout the day by working on shallowing out my angle of attack, but need to work on it a bit more. Found some drills online last night that will help.

Played Tour 18 this weekend.

What kind of shape is it in? W/all this rain, it ought to be in prefect shape.. I always found the hardest hole out there to be #3, the replica 18th hole at Doral.. Always dead into the wind too - a real biatch.

I played Cross Timbers Saturday.. If you've not been out there lately, I highly recommend it.. The fairways are out of this world, like you're hitting off hitting mats - it was mind blowing. The entire course is in freakish shape - to only pay $44 was a steal... Played the Blues, seemed shorter than I remember though - managed a 74 w/only 1 birdie.

Shot a ho hum 84 Saturday. 43/41. Front nine was looking like bogey golf or worse until I rattled off 3 pars to close. Back 9 I missed 3 2-3' putts was awful

Tour 18 was ridiculously lush. Fairways and greens were a bit slow due to not being able to mow much with all the rain, but it was like hitting off carpet.

And I'll 100% agree on Doral #18 playing the toughest. We usually play the whites, and I'd have sworn to you that it plays 420 yards or so, yet the scorecard says 360. I guess i hit really bad drives on the hole these last 2 rounds, as I laid up just short of the bunker both times instead of challenging it.

#2 (Baltusrol #8) absolutely owns me and I can't really explain why. My bunker game sucks lately, but that shouldn't prevent me from hitting that green. Yet I have no hope there it seems........#10 (Oakmont #3) gives me trouble as well with the long blind uphill approach.

Cross Timbers is probably what I'd call my home course these days, although it's been a couple months. With the shape they keep it in, I consider it possibly the best deal in the metroplex.

Anyone watch the US Amateur Championship yesterday? @ Riviera

Doug Ghim vs Doc Redman?

Ghim was 2 up going into 35

Redman hits a 50 foot Eagle on 35 to go 1 dn

Redman birdies 36 to square it up, 10 foot putt.

On to extra holes #10 (driveable par 4)

Ghim hit a miserable drive, had nothing, hit it into the bunker, didn't get out of the bunker.

Redman won it with a par.

It's been a few years since I have been out there, stupid of me.. I was actually a Starter/Marshal out there for a year or so, think it was back around 2004... I guess the Roadrunners have totally acclimated to humans now. We were right up next to them all day long, hardly flinched.
