Kaepernick chooses activism over NFL

Recommended Posts

As if he had a lot of options  https://www.yahoo.com/sports/colin-kaepernick-making-choice-activism-nfl-172340525.html

In a flurry of tweets and retweets Monday night, Colin Kaepernick used his sizable social media platform (1.1 million-plus followers) to comment and promote issues concerning police violence involving minorities and the prison-industrial complex, notably the use of inmate labor.

This isn’t new. His Twitter feed is a near daily display of activist messages and arguments. Last weekend he retweeted a couple images that compared modern police officers to slave catchers of the past. To some it was a history lesson. To others who see the many honest and fair members of law enforcement that are trying to build a better future, it was an insult.

What Kaepernick hasn’t been tweeting about, or speaking about, or granting interviews about is that he remains an unsigned free agent as NFL training camps creep closer and available jobs are being filled. Kaepernick, who once started in a Super Bowl but is most famous for taking a knee during the national anthem last year, is unemployed.

No one says he should replace Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers or even be slotted in as a starter. He is undoubtedly better, however, than some of these third-stringers with camp invites.

As team after team passes him by, the obvious conclusion is that his high-profile political stances have made him, in the minds of NFL decision-makers, a liability greater than the perceived value he would bring to the team. Make no mistake, if Kaepernick completed 69.9 percent of his passes for 38 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions last season (MVP Matt Ryan numbers), he could tweet whatever he wanted.

After all, there are plenty of other players who joined him on one knee during the anthem who will be suiting up next season.

When your perceived-negatives outweigh your perceived-positives though, you’re done. This is pretty much how it works in every profession, let alone one as cutthroat as the NFL. Kaepernick completed just 59.2 percent of his passes while starting for a 2-14 team. He’s a back-up at this point. So here we are.

Yet he doesn’t seem to care … or at least care enough to change his behavior in an effort to ease fears from clearly skittish teams who tend to like quiet, compliant back-ups. The simplest advice for Kaepernick if he wants to play in the NFL next season is to just be quiet.

He won’t be quiet. He won’t back down.

Whether you agree with his stances, disagree with his stances or find some reasonable and some not, it’s worth offering at least a nod of respect for a guy willing to risk so much for what he believes in.

Kaepernick will someday run for office in a very very very black district. Bank it.

...Where he will get destroyed for not growing up in a very very black district and not being 'black enough'.

Bank it.

Iknow we've had this discussion before, but F it:

the NFL has proven repeatedly that it will hire: Rapists, Murderers, Thugs, Child Abusers, Woman Beaters, Cheaters, Liars, Drug Abusers, Lushes, Thieves - even Methodists - As long as they can help bring a championship.

But yeah, somehow, all 32 teams got together to draw the line at fluffy hair and kneeling.

Well, ya GOT to have SOME kind of standards....

this. Ever see 8 mile? The scene that Eminem finds out the black guy went to a private prep school? Some real black dude will destroy him using his own background

Kaepernick would absolutely be on a roster if he didn't make waves. This article is right on: the perceived negatives of a team distraction and bad PR outweigh the positives for an NFL team.

Kids a total punk. I will chuckle when he blows all his money, which shouldn't be long.

I dunno. He's not a gangsta thug type ready to blow it all on hookers and booze and parties. He's got the brainz of a movement leader.

I disagree. He's had chances, he won't accept the pay a backup QB from a horrible team gets offered.

Are you kidding me? Have you heard this moron talk? He's borderline retarded.

In truth no. Being overseas, I don't watch the news, I read it. To actually take the time to listen to an interview requires more rats' asses than I want to give him. But what I read indicates he's no more stoopid than anybody else in his delusional alternate reality movement.

Pretty much this.

I may be wrong, but didn't his GF radicalize him?

Both of these points are valid, but I think the real reason is the fact that he's not really that talented anymore. The media circus that follows him just makes it worse for his cause of playing again.

It's not just that he's not talented. The NFL changed the way the read option was used THE YEAR after his Superbowl run. Without that. He's not a good qb.

I guess what I'm saying is he's talented enough for a backup gig but no team wants a backup with that kind of baggage. Kaep talked his way out of the league. If he was either better or more quiet he may be employed.

Totally agree. I knew what you meant with your statement.

eta: Also, I hope he never finds another job in the NFL.

Even though I just got done admitting that I've never heard him speak, just how bad can it be? If you sold haircare products to the black community, would you hire him as a pitchman? I'd think you'd have to give serious consideration.

Not me. I want him to get picked up by the Bills, Cleveland - Jets - something like that.

Then just absolutely SHIIT the bed on the field.

But sure enough, there'd still be people making excuses for him.

No. He comes off as an airhead. Has a confused look on his face as he labors to make a non-sensical statement.

Well, at least we are equal haters of him and his act.

Trust me, it's worse where I live. 1 hour away from the ghey bay. Stupid 9ers fans run rampant near here

You got me curious enough to search out an interview, give him an ear and see what's going on. I had to restart my computer to do it too since the VPN was being problematic. I found this interview here where he gives his ideas on Fidel Castro. Putting aside what he says, the way he says it isn't so bad. He's not making false claims, even Castro has good points to admire: heath care, education, apartheid . Pointing those out while papering over the bad though isn't going to fool anyone. He's definately drinking the loony left kool-aid.

Overall, about what I expected, not nearly so bad as you'd made it out to be.

See end-of-career Barry Bonds. Simply no longer good enough to warrant the distraction. Could he be a third-stringer? Is he one of the best 96 quarterbacks the world? Absolutely to both. But he's not one of the best 32, and no one wants to bring media circus that this idiot brings to have a guy holding a clipboard in the sidelines.

Even the black coached and run teams don't want him because of the PR? Odd to me.

Let m ask this. Would you as an owner rather Tebow or Kaep? Must pick one.

From a pure football standpoint, I doubt anyone would choose Tebow. Mix in the PR issues with both of them, most probably choose Tebow

ETA: actually, I'm not so sure now that I think about it. Tebows career is over. Kaep still has a shot.

You get the athletic ability along with the PR.

They don't want him because he's not good enough to start AND causes a distraction. In other words he's just not valuable enough to the team to warrant the potential headache.

I guess I'd rather have Kaep but only because I think he can play a little. Tebow is done.

This is what I have been saying all along. He WILL file a lawsuit against the nfl for collusion. He WILL lose because to prove collusion you have to prove that the teams worked together. Which they are obviously not.

Sure as heck won't be signed as a backup. What would be the point of that? :dunno:

His only shot is a starter goes down to injury in the preseason. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Ray Rice would disagree with you!

No one is getting raped or murdered on the field by someone in an NFL uniform. If he had keep this off the field he would be working today.

Is this that hard to understand?
