At what point with a high temp. do you go to the ER?

Recommended Posts

Been sick since last night now got a fever of about 102.5 up from 101 this morning. Was just curling up on the couch and watching TV and ride it out ... but fock this is starting to actually scare me a little now as I never had a fever this high before. I hate going to the doctors and hospitals more - but might not have a choice... Is Peanut or the infamous Med Student around who are at least pretend interweb doctors. I just took a cold shower and feel a little better and still thinking of just riding it out and let it pass as once a year I usually get some sort of bug that knocks me on my ass for a bit from my kids :( thoughts?

I'd wait till it hit 106 if I were you. Tylenol is bad for you, don't take it.

Tylenol lowers fever.

Ummm yeah I have taken several and they do help for an hour or 2. It's likely nothing - just never had a fever like this at least not since I was a kid

104 and above is when I would worry, or if Tylenol wasn't keeping it below 103. Just my two cents.

Okay well I'm not even a pretend doctor but I can tell you the few times my son has had a high fever (104 or more) the doctors tell me 1. you can't die from a high fever, 2. unless it's heat stroke related the fever is a symptom of your body fighting off infection and 3. Tylenol and staying hydrated is all you can do.

Kids have a better tolerance for high fever than adults but unless you're running one higher than 103/4 I wouldn't bother with the ER but you may as well try urgent care or a pharmacy minute clinic if you're worried.

If the fever is uncontrollable with meds and running in 104's, I would start to be concerned a bit. 103's and lower and meds can reduce the fever, I wouldn't worry unless it lasts a few days....and no pain involved.

This morning it was 101 now even after meds it has gone up to over 102.5. Like folks have said here likely nothing.

Pretty much this.

102? Pansy...my kids have hit that many times and never complained this much about it.

It isn't that simple as a single number. While isolated temps of 104 or greater do pose risk of frying you brain (heat stroke), accompanying symptoms are also important in determining who needs medical attention. What you are trying to figure out is the likelihood of bacterial infection, which can kill you quickly and responds to antibiotics, as opposed to viral infection, which typically runs its course and is treated symptomatically with meds like Tylenol. One common exception is influenza (flu), a virus which responds to antivirals, if given within the first couple days of symptoms.

"Viral" symptoms include runny nose, diffuse muscle aches and sometimes cough, rash, sore throat or diarrhea. But any of those things can be associated with bacterial infection as well. Symptoms suggestive of more severe infection include bad headaches, bloody diarrhea, confusion, rash draining pus, and cough with shortness of breath/chest pain.

Finally you have to factor in the host's immune system and exposures. Do you have any other medical problems? Risk factors for HIV? Travel to Sierra Leone?

If you are concerned and don't have a doctor you can see quickly, urgent care clinics are a good place to start. If you have to go to the ER, go between 3 and 10am, when they are typically less busy. Wait later and prepare for a several hour visit.

I've hit 104 a couple of times. That's when you need somebody around to monitor your temp. If it goes higher, call an ambalance and try to catch a leprechaun.

Don't go with a temp in the 103's unless it's been a few days or unless you are having pain with the fever, or uncontrollable diarrhea and vomiting.

Hop in a tepid bath, if it doesnt drop with meds aka tylenol motrin...you need medical attention. Also. Most thermos are off a degree or so.

You don't go to the ER for a fever. You go to urgent care. Much much cheaper and much less wait time. ER is only for life threatening stuff like stroke, heart attack, brain injury, complex fractures, unstoppable bleeding.

when my daughter was younger i was told to only bring her to the hospital for a temperature over 103 or if she maintains a fever near 103 for more than 3 days.

as someone who has been to the ER more times than i care to remember, i would not go if i didn't have to.

the wait is long as hell and it's an expensive trip for them to only prescribe you tylenol.

For a fever? Never. Only a broken bone or severe gash could make me go to the hospital and walk out oweing more money than I make in a year. There's very few things I can't just YouTube how to fix. Haven't been to a doctor in 20years or so. They charge you 5k minimum and like Peenie said, you end up with a Tylenol prescription and advice you could have googled.

I think 103 - 104 is a goog point to check into something. I know West Nile can raise your temperature rapidly to dangeroud levels. I think you can take a mixture of Tylenol and Advil, Advil maybe every four hours, tylenol every six, to manage the fever.

call the triage line to get a nurse, its on your health insurance card. Free call, your insurance encourages you to use it to avoid an ER visit if it isn't considered serious

Well I am in the hospital. Went to the ER this Morning when my fever was still at around 103.5 - 104. I got an infection when I was water skiing on Labor day. I knew I got a cut on my back and it was hurting a little but couldn't really see it as it was in a awkward place (middle upper back). Apparently thats what was causing the fever, cramps, and I guess what felt like Hallucinations last night. Had a friend take me to the doc this morning. Doc says I might be there maybe untill Friday. Starting to feel a little better though. Good thing I didn't wait any longer though ...
