2013 ROOKIE SKILL POSITION FANTASY PROSPECTS

On Lattimore, I don't mean to speculate on his actual value here, but my feeling is that he'll be a late 1st or early 2nd in most dynasty leagues. Call it hype or whatever, but the name value and upside of a healthy Lattimore will drive his draft spot. While it will be difficult for dynasty owners to be patient on Lattimore, I think owners will dream of a 2014 where he is starting or contributing heavily for an NFL team... and that will make the injury stuff fade to the background. Whether or not Lattimore is actually worthy of being a late 1st or early 2nd dynasty pick is another debate, I suppose, but that is the ballpark where I see him landing. But I'm largely just guessing.

Leshoure is one I debated internally for a while, and despite my overall stance, there are definitely some things to like about him. However, I ultimately ranked him where I did due to what I see as a somewhat limited skill set along with my belief that he probably isn’t the long-term answer at RB in Detroit. I do concede that he should be a solid stop-gap producer for the Lions in the short run. One thing that sort of colors my analysis… Detroit’s opposition has to really focus on stopping their air attack, yet with that as the backdrop, Leshoure only averaged 3.71 yards per carry. Out of the 23 RBs with 200+ rushing attempts in 2012, he ranked 20th in yards per carry. I’m assuming he wasn’t seeing teams stack the box very often, so I’d generally expect a better average. Perhaps another year removed from his Achilles injury will benefit him and Leshoure will show more explosiveness? That very well could be the case.

2013 ROOKIE SKILL POSITION FANTASY PROSPECTS

Yeah, I am one that always cringes when workout warriors that dominate the combine get talked about (or even drafted) as something far better than their game tape shows. Knile Davis seems to be a different story though (as you pointed out)... since he has produced exceptionally well against major competition when fully healthy. -I think the combine may have potentially boosted his NFL (and dynasty) draft stock considerably.

2013 ROOKIE SKILL POSITION FANTASY PROSPECTS

Yeah, Austin and Patterson are now firmly in the mix as the top WR prospect (fantasy/dynasty), along with Allen. It is interesting that Allen has the size and polish to his game but maybe lacks that elite speed. Austin has the elite speed and enough polish to his game but is small. And Patterson has the size and speed you want to see but lacks polish right now. -They all have two out of three of size, speed and polish. Landing spot might be the deciding factor ultimately, even though I am usually a talent over situation guy.

If the 2013 Draft were today...

Tavon Austin having a big combine. Climbing the NFL draft board as well as dynasty boards.

    Dwayne Bowe

Andy Reid could have a nice impact on Bowe's fantasy value (if he stays in KC/is franchised). Alex Smith to KC would probably make me rethink things. Obviously, KC needs QB help in a major way. And Smith would be an upgrade there. I just look at how Crabtree has emerged with Smith on the bench and it makes me think that Bowe might not see the volume of looks he deserves... let alone anything down the field (if Smith was trade to the Chiefs).

    Giants release Ahmad Bradshaw

IMO, Bradshaw could really help a lot of teams. However, it may be hard for him to secure a gig as the clear starter or lead back in a committee. He is a solid-yet-unspectacular runner that is very good in pass protection, so that will be very appealing. Plus, he isn't that old yet. However, the foot issues have to be a major concern for any potential suitors. He wasn't missing games for NYG, but he missed a lot of practice and a new team might not be so willing to commit to a someone missing so much time Mon-Thurs. -I worry that he may not get a lot of interest until he gets a clean bill of health and the preseason is approaching. Bradshaw owners may have to be patient with him in order to see where he ultimately lands this season.

Thanks mobb_deep, I appreciate it. -Regarding Britt, I may be too optimistic about him currently, but this being a contract year and a season where he is further removed from his major knee injury makes me think we could see something special. Of course, his knucklehead factor is a major concern, so I always keep that in mind when analyzing Britt. -Matt

    Doug Martin

I know their physical build is different, but his skill set and overall production as a rookie is reminding me a lot of Matt Forte (and his rookie production). Martin seems to have a well-balanced skill set for his position. Might not have blazing speed, but he can do everything asked of a RB, and does it well.

    Denarius Moore is Da Bomb

He’s got good speed and great playmaking ability. Palmer and the Raiders should be finding ways to get him the ball consistently throughout the game. Aside from DMC, he is the only difference maker Oakland has at the skill positions. –Now that Moore is healthy and largely on the same page with Palmer (after missing camp and the preseason) things are really heating up for the young wideout.

    A. Morris-Let's Discuss

It can be hard to get a good read on Shanahan and what he does at RB. However, Morris is proving capable and hasn’t been coughing up the ball. He’s seemingly a good fit for the ZBS and doesn’t have to have dazzling moves or blazing speed to produce in it. I like his odds of continuing to produce this season, though his value is obviously better in non PPR leagues. I think one poster commented on him being a low-end RB1 or high-end RB2 this year… and I tend to agree.

    Wilson or Brown

Wilson's issues have been ball-security and pass-blocking. However, I believe pass-blocking hasn't been a big strength for Brown either. If Bradshaw were to go down for the season, I think whichever of these guys can make Coughlin most comfortable that they are able to protect Manning when called upon in the blocking scheme will see the field the most (and mabye by a good margin). That said, I would expect them both to be used in some capacity. -Even now, with Bradshaw still in the mix, I think Wilson is making a bid to see a handful of carries per game (due to his explosiveness).

quickie: josh gordon or mike williams

It’s pretty close, but I’d personally give the edge to Williams here. Over his last three games, his production (and targets) has been solid. Plus, while both WRs in question have good matchups, there is a distinct possibility that NO puts TB in a positions where they must pass a lot late in the game (good for Williams).

    Washington Defense

Great info here. Thanks. I play a wwdbc (waiver wire d by committee) in one redraft league most years and habe decent success with it playing the matchups. WAS already was one of my top options for this week without knowing the full state of the STL o line. Now with this info I feel better about them. Thanks again, OP.

    Matt Ryan

I think most of us that are in the camp of Ryan not being a “value” selection are not necessarily calling him a bad pick at his current ADP. We’re just saying he isn’t so much of a sleeper or a value pick. As I mentioned before, I think his upside is already starting to be priced into his cost/ADP. I don’t see him as a wasted pick at this point; it seems near to fair market value, imo. An example: You can go into a store with $20 and get what looks like exactly $20 worth of quality goods or services. You did just fine with your transaction. You got what you paid for. On the other hand, if you see the opportunity to spend only $15 to get what looks like $18 worth of goods or services, you would get better value for your money (a better Return on Investment). While you’re a touch worse off with this particular good or service (a QB maybe?) you still have $5 left over to spend elsewhere (maybe on an improved RB or WR in the world of FF). With all of that said, if Ryan is a guy you really want this year… go out and get him. Absolutely. I have no qualm with that at all. And I do agree with the point made that not every selection in your draft has to be a value pick. However, I would say that making several quality value picks is often a key ingredient to a successful draft.
