NFL overtime rules. What would happen if...

Recommended Posts

....the team with 1st possession works the clock down far enough to kick a field goal as time runs out? :dunno:

I think the other team would get a possession and the game ends when they score or lose the ball.

So they would play with 00:00 on the clock?

I would say team A would have to kickoff and, if returned, the game would end. If not returned, they get one play.

If the clock ran out, the team with the higher score would win.

As per the overtime rules, each team is guaranteed at least one possession as long as a TD isn't scored.

The longest time of possession has been 12:53 seconds.

Non-issue.

Edit a different site says 13:27, unsure which one is correct. Not researching it.

Overtime periods these days are only 10 minutes.

According to this, the answer is that the team controlling the ball for the entire period and kicks a field goal would win.

“If a team receives the ball on the opening kick of overtime and has a drive that lasts [the full overtime period] and kicks a field goal as time expires, do they win? The other team never had the opportunity to possess the ball.”

Weird quirk of the rules, Garthonk. Yes, the first team would win if it got the ball at the start of overtime and never allowed the other team a chance to possess. From Rule 16, Article 4 of the 2018 NFL Digest of Rules: “There shall be a maximum of one 10-minute [overtime] period, even if the second team has not had an opportunity to possess the ball or if its initial possession has not ended.” The NFL was determined to have one overtime period last 10 minutes in the 256 regular-season games.

I was wondering the same thing watching the end of the Saints/Falcons game yesterday

Saints/Balt. Didn't the Saints control the ball almost the entire first quarter?

When there’s no time on the clock, the team with the higher score wins.

Lawd give me strength...

How is that a non issue for a 10 minute long overtime?

This seemed like a pretty obvious answer before I even read it.

Well, considering that they changed the rule a couple of years back to "ensure" that each team had a chance at possession unless the first team scored a TD, it was not quite that clear. :dunno:
