Daughter brag (11 years old):

This is her second year of playing lacrosse. I am the coach. She had a fine first season last year, but was still learning the game. The first half of the year the team was inconsistent. The second half they all seemed to get it and we finished very strong. We had our pre-season tournament the last weekend in feb. The girls went 4-0 and heartily won the games. They looked pretty sharp after not playing full game since last year. everyone, including the 4-5 new girls are using their off-hands. it is very rewarding as a coach to see this happening. We are currently 12-0 and and now have goalie depth. the girls are playing amazing ball. we often have to coach them to either only take left handed shots or complete 3 passes before shooting in the second halves. my daughter plays attack. she does a lot of things well, but was having difficultly scoring (she was hitting the goalie and the post a bit). she was getting a little bummed about it. she was starting to pout, play more lethargically, and malinger. a couple of weeks ago we were talking about it and i asked if she was having fun and if she wanted to continue. she said YES! I asked her to be more aggressive on ground balls and to attack the goal.... the next day she racked up 2 goals and 3 assists. she was glowing. I had my stick stolen and took her with me to buy a new one. I gave it to her. with it her cradling, ground balls, passing and shooting accuracy has greatly improved. her first game with it she scored 4 goals in the 1st half. We had to pull her to give some others some scoring opportunities. She has been on fire, and while she is not our best player, she is very involved in the offense. so cool to see her build her confidence.

Oh... generally speaking the league very constructive and positive. i it is fun to chat with the other coaches. there is 1 team from southern marin i cannot stand. last year he was instructing his girls to check in ways that illegal in the men's game (where there is protective gear). checking is not legal until the U12 level, and only modified. we played them twice last year. once in the first weekend (they killed us 15-3), then again closer to the end of the season (lost 6-8) one of the best games the girls played. we just played them last weekend. i was very pleased to beat them 12-3. my asst coach and i decided not to pump the break with them. while the game was pretty much done at half time, we did not go to the "left only", or "3 passes before a shot." We did work on our set offense and slowed it down a bit...but "if you have a shot, take it." this coach is a major dbag.

 

 

update from last weekend:

girls are 15-1. 2nd in northern california out of 35 for their level. daughter had 5 goals and 2 assists in the two games today. we played that southern marin team again sunday and got them 6-0. he does not seem to be coaching the same aggressive behavior as last year. better sportsmanship.

Here's what I got from it:

The coach thing doesn't surprise me (see: USA Gymnastics), but the DAD thiing is a little.... off-putting.

sports should be strictly about the kids.  Not the parent-child relationship.  its really creepy to read this. 

I'm not saying parents should teach their kids.  At all.  But kids desperately need a HUGE place to just figure out things with their peers without parental supervision.  When they grow up without that, they become dysfunctional as adults.  Sports is an awesome arena for that and you're robbing your daughter of that essential experience when you think you are helping her. 

I hate to be harsh, but this is one of the big things dragging the US downhill.  We are creating infantile adults.

One of the BIGGEST things kid learn in a group without parents is how to handle bullies and other crappy people.  A kid in your peer group is being a diick?  Beat the crap out of them.  Teaches your kid to stand up for themselves.  Teaches the diick to behave.  None of that can happen when parents are around.  The decent kid learns to cower and be afraid.  The diick learns he or she is protected.  You create a wussy society, quick to kneel to bullies.

He coached his 11 Y.O's team a few years ago. She just made the varsity team as a freshman. Pretty sure she has a different coach now.

Yes... I kept my distance when she decided to try out. Told her I would help her if she wanted.  She asked for defensive techniques.

 

I had contact with coach for the first time last night.  He told me he knew of my background and asked me if I wanted to help coach.  I declined for 2 reasons:

- I want her to be coached by other coaches. It is good for her development to learn how to work with different styles and philosophies.

- my work day changes frequently, making it hard to commit to much of anything
