Song Lyrics that move you

Recommended Posts

Plus the opening guitar riff kicks ass :headbanger:

My two favorite guitar solos (the ones that just fit the song and sound the coolest to me) are from this and Eyes of a Stranger (Queensryche).

Like what I've heard of Steve Earle. Big fan of "Guitar Town"

Well I gotta get crackin'

while I still can

Got a two-pack habit

and a motel tan

I think it's "keep rockin'" not "get crackin'"

Guitar Town is a great song, and a very good album. More pure country than a lot of his later stuff. The second track "Goodbye is all we got left to say" is also one of my favorite Earle tunes.

Even though my handle is based off being a 'Parrothead', Earle is probably my favorite musician. Of course I'm not one of the self-proclaimed 'experts' around here.

You're probably right. Not a song I've heard more than a few times, and my biggest exposure to it was from a cover band a buddy played in.

Wasn't he on The Wire as well?

Yep. The drug counselor Waylon. I always wondered if he came up with that name.

Earle was a pretty hard-core addict in the early 90's and actually spent some time in jail for it.

"Shakin'"

Rosanna's daddy had a car she loved to drive

Stole the keys one night and took me for a ride

Turned up the music just as loud as it could go

Blew out the speakers in her daddy's radio

She was shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

Snappin' her fingers (oh oh ooo oh)

She was movin' round and round (oh oh ooo oh)

That girl was shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

We started drinkin' wasn't thinkin' too straight

She was doin' 80 and she slammed on the brakes

Got so high we had to pull to the side

Her +!+s were shakin' 'til the middle of the night

Shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

Snappin' her fingers (oh oh ooo oh)

She was up and down and round and round

Shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

Shakin' (oh oh ooo oh) (oh oh ooo oh)

(oh oh ooo oh) (oh oh ooo oh)

I got a little nervous

When she took her coat off

She looked so pretty

Ahh yeah

I'm always talkin' baby talkin' too much

I love that little girl and I just can't get enough

It takes a lonely night with nowhere to go

Just call Rosanna, it's a hell of a show

And she's shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

Snappin' her fingers (oh oh ooo oh)

She'll be movin' round and round (oh oh ooo oh)

Oh she's shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

Shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

Snappin' her fingers (oh oh ooo oh)

She'll be movin' up and down (oh oh oo oh)

Round and round and round (oh oh ooo oh)

And shakin' (oh oh ooo oh)

Sha sha sha sha sha she was shakin'

Sha sha sha sha sha she was shakin'

Sha sha sha sha sha she was shakin'

Sha sha sha sha sha she was shakin'

Also pretty much all Tool lyrics are badass. To name a few:

Right in Two

Vicarious

Lateralus

Reflection

I have come curiously close to the end, down

Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole,

Defeated, I concede and

Move closer

I may find comfort here

I may find peace within the emptiness

How pitiful

It's calling me

And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping

The moon tells me a secret, my confidant

As full and bright as I am

This light is not my own and

A million light reflections pass over me

Its source is bright and endless

She resuscitates the hopeless

Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting

And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt

Don't want to be down here feeding my narcissism.

I must crucify the ego before it's far too late

I pray the light lifts me out

Before I pine away.

So crucify the ego, before it's far too late

To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical,

And you will come to find that we are all one mind

Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.

Just let the light touch you

And let the words spill through

And let them pass right through

Bringing out our hope and reason

Before we pine away.

One of my favorite lyrics is The Greatest Discovery by Elton John. Anyone with a little sibling should absolutely listen to it. I was || close to playing and singing it at my little brother's wedding, but luckily I remembered I'm not very good at either. I did play it a bazillion times for my kids as more were added to the family.

Peering out of tiny eyes
The grubby hands that gripped the rail
Wiped the window clean of frost
As the morning air laid on the latch

A whistle awakened someone there
Next door to the nursery just down the hall
A strange new sound you never heard before
A strange new sound that makes boys explore

Tread neat so small those little feet
Amid the morning his small heart beats
So much excitement yesterday
That must be rewarded must be displayed

Large hands lift him through the air
Excited eyes contain him there
The eyes of those he loves and knows
But what's this extra bed just here

His puzzled head tipped to one side
Amazement swims in those bright green eyes
Glancing down upon this thing
That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing

In those silent happy seconds
That surround the sound of this event
A parent smile is made in moments
They have made for you a friend

And all you ever learned from them
Until you grew much older
Did not compare with when they said
This is your brand new brother
This is your brand new brother
This is your brand new brother

We could totally re-write Frosty the Snowman to something like Laquisha the crack wh0re very easily.

come to think of it, that's a damn good idea for a thread.

One of you more talented people should get this started.

These moved me:

He'll come flying out of this town
A resignation superman
And today the bad guys win
'Cause he turned his cape in
Now, he says

Yes, I'll turn my back on this world
Yes, I'll turn my eyes from this world
Oh well...

Yes, he's tired of fighting in this town
All the suffering and vice
He wants to fall in love and
Maybe settle in and live a life

Now I'll turn my back on this world
Yes, I'll turn my eyes from this world

Oh Lord, I need to believe in you now that I'm suffering
Oh Lord, I need to receive your hand in my heart

And he keeps an eye out on this town
The resignation superman
He'll keep himself amused
With the evening news
Oh... he said

Yet I'll turn my back on this world
Yes, I'll turn my eyes from this world
Now I broke my back on this world
Now I'll wash my hands of this world

This eye looks with love
This eye looks with judgment
Free me take the sight out of this eye

- Edie Brickell

The world is a bad place
A bad place, a terrible place to live
Oh, but I don't wanna die

- Junior Campbell

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

- Bob Dylan

But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have

- Dewey Bunnell

The memories of a man in his old age

Are the deeds of a man in his prime.

- Roger Waters

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds
hush their singing,
- C Austin Miles

Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the 'and of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
This songs of freedom
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fullfil the book.

Won't you help to sing
This songs of freedom-
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Changes by Bowie: "And these children that you spit on, as they try and change their world are immune to your consultation; they're quite aware of what they're going through."

John Denver and Jim Croce: Almost every song they ever wrote gives me chills.

The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel: "Asking only workman's wages, I come looking for a job but I get no offers; Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue. I do declare there were times when I was so lonesome I took some comfort there" "Lie la Lie"

Too many to name. But I wlll finish with my favorite- "And in the end.....the love you take....is equal to the love....you make"

THese always make me think of oldmaid.

I ain't, I ain't, I ain't
A buyin' into your apathy
I'm gonna learn ya my philosophy
You wanna know about atrocity, atrocity?

I know you want what's on my mind
I know you like what's on my mind
I know it eats you up inside
I know, you know, you know, you know

I am a man, a man
I'll give ya somethin' that ya won't forget
I said ya shouldn't have worn that dress
I said ya shouldn't have worn that dress

I know you want what's on my mind
I know you like what's on my mind
I know it eats you up inside
I know, you know, you know, you know

This song is one of my favorites from Dwight Yoakam. I don't know if he wrote it about the break up with Bridgette Fonda or the death of his good friend Buck Owens. Both happened around the same time.

It's never alright

It comes and it goes

Oh it's always around

Even when it don't show

They say it gets better

Well I guess that it might

But even when it's better

It's never alright

It's never ok

Lonely moves here and there

Sometimes it stays

In one place and just stares

They say that the darkest

Is just before light

Each day may get brighter

But it's never alright

I try real hard to remember

As good as it gets

But the harder and harder I try

All I can do is forget

They say it gets better

Well I guess that it might

But even when it's better

It's never alright

It's never been mine

To win or to lose

No it's always been yours

To pick or to choose

They say love lives better

When set free not held tight

But even when it's better

It's never alright

Yeah even if it gets better

It won't be alright

Sometimes, you just hear a song lyric, and it moves you. Maybe it gives you chills. Maybe it takes you back to a good time and place. Maybe it reminds you of a person you lost along the way. Maybe it gives you insight into the human condition. Maybe it just creates a beautiful picture in your mind.

What are some of your favorite lines in songs?

Here are a few of my favorites...

"Are you there? Say a prayer, for the Pretender. Who started out so young and strong, only to surrender."

From The Pretender, by Jackson Browne

This is a line that gives me chills. Depending on my mood, its either a cautionary tale, or, I really identify with that line.

_____

"Remember when, I moved in you, and the Holy Dove was moving too, and every breath we drew was Hallelujah?"

From Hellelujah, by Leonard Cohen

This song is amazing, this line in particular. The weaving back and forth between sexual and religious imagery is interesting. I once heard this song played in a church, by someone who doesn't listen to lyrics very closely.

______

"The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face."

From Visions of Johanna, Bob Dylan

I don't know why, but I've always liked this line. Just a vibrant picture I guess.

______

"Lemon yellow custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye."

From I Am The Walrus" by the Beatles

Its not an appealing image, but it sure is vibrant.

________

"And the people danced and prayed, to the neon god they'd made"

From the Sound of Silence, by Simon and Garfunkel

A pretty accurate depiction of our society's worship of technology and media.

________

Anyway, I could go on and on. Whatch got?

greta post!
