Ekeler a weekly flex starter?

Recommended Posts

Obviously he will be an automatic start if Gordon goes down, but has he already show enough to at least be a weekly flex start?

Ajayi and his bruised labia/back is requiring some roster shake up. Need some Charger homers to weigh in with their thoughts.

I mean...he's not garbage. He'll get you some points most weeks, probably a respectable floor, high ceiling only on rare occasions. But reliable for what he is. He's a lot like Sproles was back in his prime--not the starter, may not get TDs, but will be active. I have him in my main league. Not starting him over Hunt/Cook/Connor/Thompson for 3 spots. But I would if two of those guys went down, and I'd feel okay about it.

He's a flex play in ppr for sure. His targets say he's the new woodhead. My team is too deep to plug him in but most years I'd be using him moving forward.

Just think if Gordon can still play it’s hard for Me to trust starting a back up rb in a flex spot.

I don’t see myself even flexing him yet because I don’t see him catching a lot of passes or scoring many tds.

Even last week was something like 9points, which is less than my flex Golladay

Weekly?

I don't know if I would go that far just yet but week to week, yes

Do you remember when Woodhead was the backup to Gordon and ended the year as the #15 overall RB in PPR? Theres enough volume in this offense to produce two fantasy relevant RBs. Ive already been on record saying I think hell end the year as a top 20 RB in full point PPR -- so yes -- hes a weekly flex starter with RB2 upside imo.

I think that’s special.

Now I don’t see any where that the op said it is a ppr?

I play in a non ppr, so despite or display of arm flexing I’ll stick to my statement.

That I would have a tough time trusting him.

Thanks for your insite.

Kamara and Ingram were both top 10, its not crazy to support two talented RBs in ppr. Id worry about banking on a guy to get leftover and change of pace stats. But again, Ingram caught plenty of passes despite all world pass catcher Kamaras presence. As said already, Rivers himself has supported multiple ppr RBs on his team before with Woody.

Agreed. High powered offenses like the saints, chargers & falcons have shown that they can support two fantasy stud RBs. Elk is not getting the leftovers by the way. The coaches love his game and have made him a focal point of this offense. Im telling yall, his role is only going to grow. This kid is an absolute weapon and I think hes gonna start cutting in to Gordons touches.

Agree.

Also Evident That rivers trusts him and likes getting him involved often. That first game both Williams each dropped an important pass and I think he went to Ekeler right after both drops. I've seen different threads calling for all three NE RBs to be of starting value, I trust Ekeler way more in flex than I would any of those guys. I think the Kamara/Ingram is a good comparison, Ekeler won't breaking into the top 5 by any means, but top 30 should be easy and I think he'll be involved enough to be hitting lineups and as more than just bye week fill in.

Ekeler is the better RB and it shows in his yards per carry compared to Gordon. However, because Gordon catches a lot of passes and scores most of the tds, Ek is limited considerably. I hope they can grow into a 50-50 timeshare so Ek can get some tds and more catches.

Yards per carry is a bad stat to use as the base of a comparison most of the time. In this case, it really does not work out. Gordon gets a lot of 'tough assignment' plays called. Obvious runs in stacked boxes for instance. Ekeler often gets 'space' plays to take advantage of his quickness/shiftiness. So of course he will 'look better' and have better per carry stats often. Here is the bad news for those who feel the need to 'pick a side' with these two guys: they are both good players who are fulfilling roles and they will work together throughout the year if they both stay healthy. In PPR, Gordon is an RB1 and Ekeler is a fine RB3/Flex1. And yes, I'm all over Ekeler as a low RB1 if anything happens with Gordon's health.

Great post, great points.

I would agree.

I always have a tough time starting a rb2 from any team.

But like noted it worked out really good with Kamara and Ingram.

And I think even with the Falcons Freeman and Coleman.

But I still feel a little hesitant in doing so.

Thanks.

So, if they play the rams this weekend, who have great interior DL, and great corners, doesn't it bode well for Ekeler to be schemed into more of gameplay? Not sure who the LB corps is for rams but that's their thinnist part of their d I am guessing? Could be a sneaky start week.

No question you might get ( Lucky ) and it could work out.

Or he doesn’t.

Good luck.

The only reason I’m not playing Ekeler as my flex is because I feel I have someone better....it has nothing to do with Ek. I’m sure he would get me at least 10points in .5PPR, but I’m always looking to find a guy who can give me 20.

I hear ya. Tough to find a starting spot when Golladay is rockin your flex. Ek isnt quite as valuable in half point. I know .5 sounds insignificant and it is when it comes to RBs like A-Collins, M-Lynch & Crowell, but unlike them, Ek cuts his chops in the passing game. With that said, I still thinks hes worthy of weekly flex start consideration in half point and is a lock & loaded weekly flex start with RB2 upside in full point.

Like I said, I would have no problem starting him if I had to (bye weeks when one of my three WRs are on bye) or injury, but for now, I’m thinking bigger than 10 ppg.

Hes averaging 16 ppg in half PPR so Im not sure why you keep referencing 10 ppg?

He's not quite putting up enough points to make it into my starting lineup even as a flex play in PPR, but he's on the bubble.

Can I see your roster out of curiosity? As much of an Ekeler hype man as I am, I dont even own him, unfortunately.

List of RBs who Id start Ek over in PPR (off the top of my head)

M-Lynch

A-Collins

J-Williams

A-Peterson

L-Miller

D-Henry

Sure, we're a 1/2 PPR league. Start QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, FLEX, TE, K, DST

Starters in Bold, Flex in Red.

QB - Stafford, Ryan

RB - Kamara, A. Collins, Kerryon Johnson, A. Ekeler

WR - Hopkins, JuJu. S. Schuster, A. Robinson, Crabtree, K. Stills, D. Jackson

TE - Kelce

DST - Ravens, Panthers

K - Eliott

yep I easily start him over Collins, and consider it a matchup situation with Allen Robinson

although the way the Bucs are going and facing the Steelers, I am riding out that DJax Train

Heh. I have Ekeler and three of the replaceable backs you've listed.

Whether to start Lamar Miller or to replace him with Ekeler is the last decision i'm mulling over today. Whereas OAK threw a lot to their RBs vs LAR in week 1 and Jalen Richard had a nice 11-9-55 receiving line, ARI RBs had more subdued receiving lines against LAR in week 2. Edmonds was 5-5-15 and Johnson 2-1-3. I feel more comfortable with Miller's touch counts and Yeldon and Elliott turned in reasonable performances against NYG, whom Miller will be facing today.

But I tip my cap to Ekeler's other-worldly 9.3 yards-per-touch number. Miller comes in at only 4.84.
