I had him stashed on two dynasty rosters just in case he landed in a spot like this. Will the Pats keep Lewis, White and Rex?

I would try to use him in the role White and Lewis are in and see if he can be even better.

Rex is a great swiss army type player for the Pats. 2 te sets, quick slants to cooks/edelman, gronk up the seam or rex in the flat.

I still don't get why the Bengals used him so little when his hands seem pretty good, and he is good enough of an athlete.

Time to get really excited? I acquired Burkhead in one league as a complete throw in. If I were you (unless you are in my league ) I would go get Burkhead cheap if you can. Maybe it turns into nothing, but how much can he cost right now for the upside?

Rex Burkhead's one-year, $3.15 million deal makes him the highest-paid Patriots running back since Fred Taylor in 2010.
The Patriots haven't paid a running back $2-plus million in over a half-decade. Some Patriots fans apparently assumed Burkhead would be a special teams-only replacement for Brandon Bolden. According to ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss, Burkhead is "viewed as a key cog, both offensively and on special teams" by the Patriots, while the Providence Journal's Mark Daniels believes Burkhead "is coming to the Patriots with a chance to be their starting running back."

Yeah that's what I was thinking, he would be the Rb to take the role that Blount held.

I agree... UNLESS... he truly takes Blount's role as the GL/short yardage RB. Is he that guy? I didn't think so, but there is talk that he could fill that role.

that was Blount's downfall - no disguise whatsoever when he was in there... either smashmouth run or play action... Blount didn't provide that extra dimension chip blocking and then becoming a pass target.

Well at least I know who won't be trying to get Burkhead off me for cheap in Dyno. I have too many players on that team. It's going to be tough as hell cutting down for the vet draft.

The Pats are going to pay Burkhead the most money they have paid any rb in 5 years for 1 season. Special teamer extraordinaire seems unlikely. But I will gladly capitalize on the low value

I think guys could be thinking about this in the wrong way. For a team that embraces specialists, Burkhead's versatility is extremely valuable in terms of what it allows the Pats to do on game day rosters which is an underarated issue for teams on a weekly basis. I would argue it makes perfect sense to pay him more than any recent Pats RB because he is a going to be a great deal more valuable than any has been individually by filling 4 down role. Too valuable, in fact, to pigeon hole him down to starting role most weeks unless due to injury of another.

 

Burkhead on game days can back up the starting 1st and 2nd down down pounder role, the 3rd down RB role, and play special teams. The Pats don't have to worry about activating Lewis and White both for instance but will have a strong option if one gets hurt in-game, neither of them can back up the early down guy and now they don't have to carry a backup for the early down RB. And the special teams role is big because most teams would prefer as few offensive-defensive starters on ST as possible while still not carrying a ton of game day ST only specialists. For BB, getting a guy who could be above average in each area and being able to carry an extra DL or TE, especially as the season wears on and injuries start to pile up is a heavenly thought I'm sure.

 

Its like the top quality utility guy in baseball that can step in and play any position, you don't want that guy to play 2nd base every week instead, they're too valuable in their utility role. That's just my opinion of how they see it right now, doesn't mean Rex won't change their mind at some point.

I am not saying he won't be used on special teams. But for it to be his primary function seems unlikely. He is really versatile imo, so yeah he won't be pigeon holed into one position. I am still sticking by my stance that most people are going to dismiss his ffball potential, and as long as they do I will be buying at that discount price, hoping that his versatility translates into points.

I think the Pats will end up being sorry they let Blount go, just my opinion. I know they always find guys to plug them in and play like studs. When you win SB's as they have guys wanna go their, work hard, give 110% & hopefully get a ring.

Blount was pretty ineffective in the SB and even lost a fumble. I don't think they will miss him much.

It does appear so. I wasn't expecting the Pats to have zero power running backs on the roster, I just thought that Blount wasn't good at all when they needed him the most.

the big bonus I think here tho is they get a guy with experience who has a lot left on the tyres due to how little he was used with the Bengals, which is still a wonder considering when they did play him he exploded every time, I know they have two good backs but he was every bit as good if not better all round than them.

 yeah is isn't blount sized but he isn't small either and the I think he is the biggest they have signed at the moment so he may be that goal line guy just down to what they have. but with the money they are paying him I think he will be playing 1st and 2nd downs more he is a solid rb who can make ppl miss and pick up chunks of yardage not just the hard short stuff. I think he gets the most 1st and 2snd downs but white etc will see their fair share to ensure they all have enough left in the tank for the playoffs.

Per Ian Rapoport, the Patriots extended an offer to RFA Mike Gillislee. A 2 year deal that would pay $6.4 million. $4 million in the first year. Buffalo should have a chance to match I believe, but...

NE RB situation will remain the usual cluster**** going forward, and for the foreseeable future. I don't think one can now assume Blount's production will go to any single individual.
