Tennessee Titans Draft Class

Recommended Posts

I have spent much of the draft over at a Titans message bored. Right now, about 40% of the fans there are giving us an A, and 40% an F, with the rest in between.

I am in the A camp. I know the experts will disagree, but I am thrilled. This team has in two days shown that the days of Fisherball are long gone.

______

Kendall Wright - A homerun hitter. Great in space. A perfect compliment to Kenny Britt. Love it.

Zach Brown - A linebacker who runs a 4.4, covers great, and can rush the passer. Nice. Somebody's gotta cover the freak TE's of the modern NFL.

Mike Martin - A tough, big, strong, gritty DT with a wrestling pedigree. Someone's gotta put Foster and MJD on their ass four times a year in the AFC south.

Coty Sensebaugh - A cornerback who runs in the 4.3's.

Taylor Thompson - The steal of the whole damn draft. A TE that is six foot six, 275 lbs, and oh, runs in the 4.5's, has great hands, and can block. Mark me down now... do yourself a favor and take this guy in your dynasty leagues now. He will be a Gronk in a year or two.

_____

For WAY too long, the Titans have been about run the football, and play good D. That is a ticket to mediocrity in today's NFL. Look at this offense now...

Britt, Washington, Wright, Cook, Thompson, and CJ2k.

Oh, and if you get to worried about those cats and how you cover them, Locker can always break a 40 yard run on your ass.

I'm telling you... If Locker is what we think he is, this offense is going to be the most dynamic in football in a couple years.

Our FO has killed this draft. Every single player in it has all pro talent. Now let's coach em up.

What do you think Titans fans?

1.20 - Kendall Wright

:wall:

Omg, all that talent on the board and you guys take a 5'10" wr??? Wow.

I saw K. Wright play a few times in person - 5'10" with 4.6 speed, I don't get it. Sure he's alright, but 1st round material? No.

What changed your mind on K. Wright?

What changed your mind on K. Wright?

I was in full fledged lemming "FILL NEEDS!" mode. I calmed down, thought about it, and watched a lot of video of the guy, and decided he will make the offense much more dangerous.

Titans & Bucs was bouncing his head against the brick wall with the 1st pick of Kendall Wright. I was like damn, hell ya, another offensive weapon. But why this guy when you had some big bodied WR's still on the board? What's the difference between Nate Washington, Damian Williams, and our new pick of Kendall Wright? First of all, Nate Washington has been very productive and has definitely beaten opposing defenses often. Does he catch the ball every time - NO, which p!sses me off. Non the less, he can hurt a defense, but his time is coming to an end. I didn't say every time, but once you fall asleep and worry about CJ2k or Britt(when he was healty), he's a sneaky player. Damian Williams showed some nice flashes during the end of last year. I think if a perfect passer like Manning/Brady/Rodgers was throwing the rock, this guy would've put up bigger numbers. Now insert Wright. He's explosive and seemed to be on the receiving end of the Heisman trophy QB who had nice scrambling abilities. Locker can and will do that as well, but perhaps not as well as RGIII.

Here come quoted comments via the "professionals" on each Titans player drafted...Jocstrap is excited about the pure speed this recruiting class has brought to the table...

Kendall Wright #20 - WR - Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "For people who think he's just a high-level outside guy, I think he's special with the ball in his hands. ... He's built like a running back, a little thicker than wide receivers typically are. He's also got potential as a return specialist."

Zach Brown #52 -OLB -Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "There's good news and bad news with this pick. This is one of the most gifted athletes in this draft. He's the fastest linebacker, he flies all over. That's the good news. The bad news is that he's somewhat allergic to contact. He's a great Will linebacker to rush the passer, but he struggles at the point of attack."

Mike Martin #82 - DT - Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "This is a pass-rushing interior threat. Martin comes in, and he'll be explosive for them. This is a defensive tackle who is active and can stop the run, as well as pass rush from the inside."

Cody Sensabaugh - #115 - CB - Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Sensabaugh flashed exceptional athletic ability during workouts. He will compete for playing time in the Titans' sub packages and certainly make contributions as a special teamer.

Taylor Thompson - #145 - TE - Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Thompson is an intriguing athlete who could make an immediate impact as a pass-catching tight end. His combination of size and athleticism makes him a difficult matchup on the edge.

Markelle Martin - #190 - FS - Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Martin is a talented safety with good ball skills. He has been downgraded a bit for his inconsistency, but could turn out to be a good pro in the Titans' system.

Scott Solomon - #211 - DE - Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Solomon is a high-motor edge player with the quickness to create pressure off the edges. If he can find a way to generate consistent production as a situational rusher, Solomon could crack the Titans' eight-man rotation along the defensive line.

All and all, I'm very excited about this draft for the Titan's. I thought is was going to be ho-hum about addressing the dline's pass rush, cb production/depth, and maybe something along the o-line. Instead, we've added 2 possibly dynamic offese weapons in Wright(WR) and Thompson(TE). Speed speed and more speed to match with CJ2K, Washington, Williams, and Cook. This offense will be able to keep opposing defenses off balance with a rushing or passing attack. Nice and balanced where both can hit you in the face with a huge gain or long TD! I love it!

Defense - so we sucked at sacks last year and went 9-7. Indy blows, Jax blows, and Houston is very good. What have we done to keep up with Houston in the division? I think our offense can compete and win the T.O.P. clock. What about the defense? 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th round picks went in this direction. Do I keep up with defensive players - no, not really. But I'll trust management on these picks. Love what just happened for the Titans this draft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW on a side note before you view this video - Daammnn RGIII throws a very very nice ball

I hope K. Wright turns out to be a solid player. But based on history - 1st round wr's under 6 feet tall do not fair well.......... Since 1990, there have been 16 wr's taken in the 1st who are under 6 foot. Of those, and of all those collective played years, only 4 Pro Bowl seasons have ever come out of that group (d.howard 1, t.glenn 1, s.moss 1, p.harvin 1). Pulling for another Texas kid though.

True enough.

But I bet most of those guys were drafted to extremely WR needy teams and expected to be THE guy right away, facing #1 corners.

Wright will start as the #3 guy in the slot for us, with Washington and Britt outside, and Cook at TE. Pretty good situation for a rookie to come in to. He won't be the focus of the defense.

I guess this is kind of my point - and I see it alot with Clowny here, why draft slot wr's (or part time players) in the 1st round? Can't you get that type of player later down the draft?

I'm sure they think he CAN be the guy outside at some point. He will just start off in the slot as a rookie.

From everything I read and see, they think he is special with the ball in his hands. Thinks he runs like a running back.

The thing that impresses me most about Wright is how effortlessly he changes direction at full speed. I think that probably, the slot is his natural position, as it enables him to break in and out more.

If you look at the class as a whole, a philosophical change is evident. The first round pick on offense. The second round pick is a LB made to cover TE's in this league. The Thompson kid in the Fifth has a shot to be our version of Gronk and Graham. He is bigger than Gronk AND faster than Gronk.

I'm just thrilled to see the days of Fisherball are apparently over. We are going to give Locker EVERY chance to succeed. With Washington, Wright, Cook, Britt, CJ, on the field, SOMEONE will either be open, or there will be a country mile of room for Locker to run in.

Hey Titans - Do you think Locker wins the starter job right out of camp?

If not, when looking at their schedual, when do you think he could be starting by?

Integrating a new qb and new o line etc takes times. IMO none of it works unless chris j is given some room to accelerate

I dunno. Munch is saying that it will be an open competition. I fully expect that Locker will win handily, as he damn near did last year as a rookie with no offseason.

But, seeing as how the first four games are NE, SD, DET, HOU, there is a lot of fear that Munch will puss out and start hass, let him take the kick to the teeth that schedule may provide, and then let Locker come riding in on a white horse.

We'll see.

There are some changes coming.

Obviously, Hutch will start at LG, which is a large upgrade. Munch has said Amano, the worst center in the world, will compete with the rookie UDFA and two players we already have on roster for center. I expect one of them will beat him out and we will cut him unless he agrees to a massive trimming of his 8 mil salary for the year.

Interestingly, at this point, we don't really have a fullback. There is speculation that we are going to not use one. Oddly, CJ has always gotten better yardage without one. The coaching staff mentioned that they may use some three tight end sets this year, since we have four on the roster (Cook, Stevens, Graham, and the new bohemouth Thompson), three of which we think can block (Cook we know can't).

I would hope that the changes to the line, minus a fullback, and the addition of Wright as a threat, and Locker's running ability would help CJ return to form. He always did better when VY was there to threaten the defense with his feet than with Collins. Hopefully Locker can bring the same mojo.

I also expect to see more spread formations, and more passing in early downs. Hopefully this will help open up the box for CJ.

Also, CJ seems to have bulked up quite a bit this offeseason. Looks much more stout in the shoulders. Will this cost him speed, or help him shed contact? Guess we'll see.

In limited action do you think Locker favors TEs or WRs? I look for Cook to have a pretty huge year, ala flirting with 1k yards and sixty grabs. Lotta weapons on that Titans offense, only question mark is o-line.

Hard to say, since Britt and Locker were never on the field at the same time. He seemed to really be dialed in with Washington more than anyone as I recall.

Locker likes to throw on the run, which would make you think the TE and slot guys would be favored targets, but it remains to be seen. I'd ask that over in the Seahags thread, as they all probably watched him in college, and have thus seen much more of him than I have.

Sure. Here's a link.

Taylor Thompson Profile

40 time of 4.56 37" vertical, 22 reps on the bench. BEAST!

Keep in mind, he was a DE in college, as they don't use a tight end at SMU. He will also lose weight to play TE. He said it was very hard for him to maintain that 287. I dunno if that will gain him some speed or not.

If you play in a very deep dynasty league, I'd take a flier on him in the rookie draft. I will be.

I play in a 2-year keeper league & was lucky enough to draft Gronkowski in the 13th round last year. Always looking for a steal in the 14th-15th rounds so he might be a candidate for my last pick. I'll keep tabs on him in pre-season for sure, thanks for the link.

I wouldn't expect much this season, but if he shows promise, and Cook continues to disappoint, Cook is in a contract year, so Thompson could become the main TE threat.
