Movie review - Left Behind

Recommended Posts

Read the books a few years ago and thought they were great. Even taking the religious stuff out of it, a ton of drama and action.

This weekend was the release of the movie reboot with Nicolas Cage. All I can say is holy f'ing horrible. The wife and I walked after 45 min. This movie lapped my previous worst of Showgirls. I knew Cage was struggling, but he should lose sleep after associating himself with this turd. The acting was so horribly cheesy that I thought it was an after school special from my youth. Even the score and effects were sh1t.

Got home and googled the reviews to verify. Yep, 2% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reading the books now, shame the movie sucks. Saw the trilogy with Kirk Cameron years ago, they just missed being pretty decent.

rapture fanatics make Muslim fanatics look like Ellen DeGeneres

How do they compare to atheist fanatics?

I cringed when I saw Cage was starring in this.

Also...just too hard to fit all of what is in the books into one movie...or even a few (especially with the first one sucking so bad).

Every review I read classified the Cameron flicks as epics compared to this one.

An adaptation of an evangelical Christian book starring Nicolas Cage sucks??? Color me surprised! :shocking:

There's only one good rapture movie. It's called The Rapture, a 90s movie starring Mimi Rogers and David duchoveny. Tons of nudity and sex, murder and wacko religious BS at the end. Great flick.

I enjoyed the books as well. They would be better represented in an epic a la ten commandments or a week long minimseries a la Roots/ Shogun

Bible verses related to the rapture. Some direct, some indirectly. It's better to know the wider context of each of those passages.

The concept of people being 'left behind' is in the gospels, the record of Jesus' words.

From Matthew 24:

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these (aforementioned) things be fulfilled.

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

This one I find interesting because of the insight about the natural world (but the two men in bed, and two women 'grinding' together will probably take attention here...) that I don't think was known/observed sufficiently (if at all?) yet:

Luke 17:

34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.

Night and day happening simultaneously.

do you have to be a simple minded person that relies on the crutch of religion to enjoy this movie or is it just an added bonus?

Nope, you can be simple minded any way you like.

Naomi's post is completely wrong. It belongs in the say something stupid thread. and Jesus never said anything about the rapture.

Continuing to promote any thread not started and overrun by the a-holes that have ruined what's left of this place.

I read the out of the teen version of the books when I was younger. I think these books have a lot to do with my obsession with a post-apocalyptic world. After reading, I just remember thinking how awesome it would be to be left behind.

i went to see this movie, based soley upon this thread. it is difficult subject matter to deal with in a movie. i thought this particular version of telling the story wasn't good. "in the blink of an eye" is a similar, better effort, only in a boating situation instead of an airplane.

as referred to in the post above, the real difficulty will come after the leaving behind. unless one is being taught the need for a savior, they all just come off as poorly acted, hokey attempts. with today's computerized theatrical technologies, maybe what comes next is the better story to tell.

it is grace that teaches a heart to fear a wrathful God; and the grace of a substitute for the penalty, then, relieves that fear. (they should make a song about that :).

Okay, just watched the movie. The director should be taken behind the studio and flogged for this piece of crap. They cover a small part of the beginning of the first book, and still mess it up completely. Bad script, bad acting, just bad.
