So my town is expected to have hurricane winds (100+ mph not tropical storm winds). More than likely my power will be out and its gonna flood here since it did last time. My sisters house was an option but Ill be dammed if their generator isnt working which is pissing both my sister and BIL off cause he paid $50K for this thing and to have it wired to the whole house. Didnt work once before when their power went out due to a storm, guy came back and said he fixed it, and now its not working again. They are trying to get a part in tonight but if they dont then they are evacuating and going to Atlanta or somewhere. So looks like Ill prob just have to stay here.

Nah its not a made up number. I thought I posted a picture of me in front of their house with my wife once before. With a house that big, getting a generator that will run the whole house, and wiring the entire house its gonna be expensive.

 

And we are staying not leaving as of right now. Ill find out tomorrow what my sister and her family did. Guess it depends on if they get that part.

They dont. A typical whole house generator runs off your existing natural gas hook ups and powers your homes exiting circuits.

 

There are limits on how many circuits can be wired based on the size of the generator. Most critical systems these days are on dedicated circuits so those are prioritized.

it could be a diesel generator for a commercial application. For firehouses, we usually have a 50-80kw. I could see that for a big house. You can 30-40k on those. Especially if you need 3 phase.

Im barebones. I have a 10kw portable generator. But all you need is a 5-6kw to run fridges, freezer, lights, cieling fans etc. Pretty much everything but range, heat pump, electric water heater.

 

Again, im not a licensed electrician and dont recommend this. Readers digest version...cost is about $200 plus generator.

 

First,install a double pole breaker in your panel at the bottom, away from other breakers (30amp good for a 5-6kw generator).This is your generator breaker. Then wire that breaker to the exterior of your house to an appropriate 30 or 50 amp outlet. Use 10/3 wiring for 30amp. This allows you to use the 240V twist lock outlet on your generator to get full power. When you want to use the generator, you plug it into this exterior outlet and turn on your generator breaker. This allows your entire panel to be energized. Obviously you cant run it all, so u just cut on what you need. You have to turn off your main breaker too. If not, you generator will energize your power companies grid. A worker may assume a line is dead, but it would be energized by your generator. He would not be happy.

 

My summer plan: run all but heat pump and cool with cieling fans.

 

Winter: run all but heat pump and use fireplace and blankets.

My parents house has two generators. They are connected to natural gas lines. It comes on automatically when the power fails. One powers vital systems (refrigerator, kitchen in general, heat pump) the other powers the rest, and can be turned off if you wish (for example, if it is above freezing, you can lose the pool pump to conserve gas. If it is below freezing, you need to keep that water moving.)

 

They live out in the woods, and it often takes days for power to come back out there. So they just live as always and have a mofo of a gas bill when that happens.

 

I can buy $50k. Im sure their system costs near that. The generators are huge, and its 9k sq ft, so its a b!tch to heat and cool.

You get to know generators really well in the Army going in the field all the focking time, doubly so when you're the parts clerk responsible for ordering repair parts and triply so when the generator mechanics are your friends.

 

Now, I forget so much but it's imprinted on me how big and noisy they were and how frequently they'd break down.
