wiffleball 4,631 Posted June 29, 2017 ...that Trump accuses Amazon of not paying? I mean, I've done this crap for a living. I have no idea WTF he's talking about. Can somebody fill me in on this? Best I can tell, he's pissed off that the WaPo outed his fake Time cover story and saw this as a way to 'get back' at Jeff Bezos? - Except, not paying 'internet taxes' is not a 'thing'. I mean, he literally created 'fake news' because he's mad that someone outed his other 'fake news'. - And that's real news. Too funny. But still, I'm happy to learn - PLEASE praytell, what exactly ARE these 'internet taxes' that Trump was referencing? Did Flocks of Friends mention something about this? I just hope Trump releases his tax returns so we can see if HE paid "internet taxes'. ETA: Just read Trump's latest tweet - Apparently the WaPo didn't pay their 'word taxes' either. Voltaire 4,552 Posted June 29, 2017 If I'm a Michigan resident, we have a 6% sales tax, and I buy something from a guy in Pennsylvania which has a 6% sales tax... well I owe Michigan nothing, but I am supposed to owe Pennsylvania a 6% sales tax. Local and Big Box chain retail stores lobby state governments to collect that money. They in turn pressure Amazon to collect it for them.

They're not internet taxes (obviously). That'd be sort of like calling sales taxes at a brick and mortar store - "register taxes". And for the record, you're talking about a term called "nexus" ,which would determine the situs of tax liability/collection. But still - that's not 'internet taxes'. I get the impression he was - gasp - just lashing out without being fully informed. Shocker, I know. He almost never always does that.

fandandy 3,311 Posted June 29, 2017 We recently just started paying these internet taxes on Amazon in Michigan. I guess if they have a distribution hub in your state then you need to pay sales tax. I never understood why they decided to give internet companies a leg up to begin with but it was nice while it lasted. Also, I used to enjoy the giantsfanesqueness of your threads. You have definitely lost that loving feeling though. It's all Trump all the time and it's focking getting old.

Bert 1,087 Posted June 29, 2017 Idiot has confused sales tax with "internet tax". Further, the fock chop doesn't understand that Amazon doesn't pay those taxes they simply collect the tax from their customers.

What's crazy is that Don will go ahead and publicly say this stuff despite not knowing it. That and my sense that he surrounds himself with sycophants and ass kissers, and does not particularly care about things like reality and facts.

The Supreme Court set the nexus standard for sales and use tax as physical presence. Technology changed and state laws, congress and the supreme court have not kept up. Also, they still have not fixed the problem. This also happened before the internet if you ordered items out of a catalog.
