A prominent civil rights attorney whose organization sued the Trump administration claims U.S. Customs’ personnel profiled him earlier this month when he was detained and questioned about his passport at Logan International Airport.
“I have no doubt that this happened to me because of my race and ethnicity. There was no reason other than racial profiling to single me out for additional screening,” said Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal, executive director of the Boston-based Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice.
Espinoza, a Costa Rica-born naturalized U.S. citizen, said on March 12 he returned to Logan after a vacation in Portugal. He was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, who first questioned him about his passport, scanning it against their database, before escorting him into a room for additional vetting.
Espinoza acknowledges the entire incident took about 15 minutes, but said it was mortifying.
“It was treating me, not even like a second-class citizen. It was treating me like I wasn’t a citizen,” he said. “I was being treated like a suspect in a country I called home for over three decades. ... This is a country I know and love. I have American in my DNA.”
CBP officials said privacy laws prohibit them from commenting on individual cases. However, a CBP official said: “Arriving travelers ... often require additional verification of things ranging from confirmation of their identity and proper travel documents, to clarification of declared items or travel details. These issues are typically rectified in a matter of minutes, which was the case in this instance.”
Espinoza’s group sued Trump this year on behalf of the cities of Lawrence and Chelsea over the president’s executive order defunding sanctuary cities.
Espinoza became a U.S. citizen in 1996. He said he wasn't told why his passport was questioned. He said he was asked for proof of his Boston residency — he showed his driver’s license — and held in a room with other minorities for additional vetting. Espinoza never told federal officials he’s a lawyer and they never indicated they knew who he was, he said.

I want to laugh, I really do.

He's got to be one of thousands that have sued him. Probably lose like most of them. Why are libtards constantly fighting for illegal aliens and not American citizens?

His family only needs 300 more years in this country to feel like I do when I take off my shoes to get on a plane.
