How often have you called in sick to your job?

Recommended Posts

Few of us were having this discussion in the office the other day. I've been at my job for 18 years now and have called in 3 days total. 2 for when I severely sprained my ankle playing basketball and couldn't even walk and 1 when I was violently ill with the stomach flu. I never like to fock over my co-workers by not being there. How many of you puzzies call in when you have the sniffles?

I've been at my current job for 5 years and I would guess I have called out 5 times max? Once for two days when I had strep throat. When my son was first in daycare he constantly brought bugs home and I had the stomach bug a few times and called out.

Usually if I'm sick I just work from home. I need to be pretty bad off to just not work.

If I'm feeling sick, I'm not coming into work. Working in close quarters with others, I'd rather not get them sick. That's the whole point of sick time.

Only when I broke my finger, or had a ceramic pot thrown out of a window on my head, or got spat on, or got my teeth knocked out, or got stitches in my face because the guy I was fighting had rings on all his fingers. Some concussions. Probably more. But I didn't call in much. A few hangover days though. Broken elbow too. We had unlimited sick.

I call in a few times a year and work from home. I work in close proximity with 60% of the team that works for me and inevitably if I come in sick I have two or three of them call off the next week.

I very rarely take the day off work for being sick. A couple years ago I had ankle surgery and couldn't walk for a week or so. I took 2 days off (day of, and after surgery) and then worked from home for the rest of the week. I have taken days off as sick days when my kid has had to have procedures done (nothing to major but he had to be put under a couple times).

I don't get sick days. We just call off. Depending on the job, it could be enough to get me layed off. Usually one day is not a big deal, unless its a really small job. Like a two man job, then yeah it's pretty important to come in. If the job is big enough and long enough it goes the opposite direction for allowable days off. I worked with guys who would take off every single Thursday, or every Friday. Some guys would go on benders for a few weeks getting all fvked up on booze or drugs, then come back and it was forgiven. There isn't nearly as much of this going on now. It seems our union is getting cleaned up as far as the extreme users are getting older.

10 times maybe in 25 years. Or roughly the same number my wife does in a year. I cut her slack because she works in a school.

For me, the work goes nowhere until I do it, so there is little benefit to taking off for any reason.

This is the wrong group of people to ask. Given how much work time that is spent here.

I have called in sick probably 3 times in 20 years.

That's an idea for another thread... how much time/year do you spend on the geek club?

I work from home when sick. No point in getting other people sick.

Same.

If I do call in, maybe once every 2 years it's because... I'm hungover af.

Some guys I don't know how they do it. They go from work to the bar, get sloshed until after midnight, and then come back to work. They do the same thing the next night. I would be a puddle of worthless ooze if I did that.

I can work from home so I "call in" about 2 times a month and just do that.

Before my current job very rarely. Maybe once every year or two. But for some reason with this job I get sick. I worked from home my previous 8 years so part of it may have been my immune system not being used to all the germs in an office environment but I've used up all my sick time and then some for the last 4 years since I started here. This job is also very demanding and sometimes stressful so that may also contribute.

None.

There have 2-3 times when I've come in to get the place open and rolling, then head to my office to lay down.

I really love my current job, so never... Though I have not felt well, I have WFH instead of calling in sick...

I've missed one day of school or work in my life, when I had chickenpox as a child. My coworkers also sent me home early last year the day I euthanized my cat.

I've worked when sick too many times to remember, including a period after I broke my leg and saw patients on crutches. Even though we should know better, it's pretty common for doctors to work while sick - my ex once saw patients while receiving IV fluids for severe dehydration. Nurses, on the other hand, call in sick at the drop of a hat.

4 days in the last 6 years. 2 days this year breaking my streak that began in 2011, can't remember the time before that though.

Oh god, is this the new geek club ego stroke? The old "Iv never missed a day of hard work in my life." Act? Focking puke.

Days off? Donno, few times a year maybe. When actually sick? Maybe couple times ever, that shiz is reserved for when I'm not sick and just want to do something fun. I rarely get sick anyway.

Slacker. If you aren't going into work and getting your co workers or patients sick, it means you are lazy

Why does "call in" mean the same thing as "call out"? Who are these people? :dunno:

I dunno either, but the guy I really wouldn't wanna meet in a dark alley is the guy who "calls off".
