Blacks still have it tough per USA Today

Recommended Posts

People have to leave the ghetto.

It's an isolated dead zone.

I'm black and doing well.

My daughter and her friends are all successful.

Actually....I don't know anyone that is struggling that doesn't have a physical or mental impediment. Everyone is working.

Not sure I believe that article has all the facts.

It's not just financial benefits realized by moving out of the ghettos.

Here's another article concerning how other minorities have fared since 2000:

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-african-american-income-20170915-story.html

African Americans were worse off financially in 2016 than they were in 2000.
The median income for an African American household was $39,490 last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released this week. It was $41,363 in 2000. (Both figures are in 2016 dollars, so they have been adjusted for inflation).
African Americans are the only racial group the Census Bureau identifies that has been left behind. White, Asian and Latino households have all seen at least modest income gains since 2000.

Big series of articles in the Boston Globe this week on race. One stat that was interesting:

Only 4% of households making over $75k in the region are black. :o

My former boss paid me 20k less than what he paid the person who had my job previously.

I'd argue that I'm a classic example of the income discrepancy.

ETA,

Moving from NJ to GA meant less pay and no unions to prevent being paid less than men and getting less because you're a minority and getting yearly raises for work well done. During the recession they let go of everyone in my lab and my work increased while my income did not. At the time I was told to be grateful I still had a job. Once I left that job my income increased remarkably.

Same education and experience as the previous person in the position had?

How long had that person been doing that job? Did you expect to walk in as as a new hire and make the same as the previous, experienced person? Maybe they decided, right after that person left, that they couldnt afford to fund that position as they did previously. Maybe a potential pay cut is why that person left.

Its hard to believe that they said "oh we are hiring Peenie, lets slash the salary by 20k cuz shes a black female"

Sounds like whoever was in your position, regardless of race or gender, was gonna get the shaft.

My boss was a male Pakistani and didn't respect me.

He valued white men then white women.

Just answer the aforementioned questions.

Did you have the same experience and education as the previous person to hold that job?

Yes and no. I had the education and title but I didn't have the exact experience because they worked together for so many years and she knew things I didn't know, wouldn't reveal them to me so I was out of the circle. He never trusted me. I was simply a work horse.

That happens to everyone and it's not based on your skin color. You come in as an unproven commodity and only through experience should you expect raises.

I dont understand why you would categorically dismiss the experiences of another person.

Shes lived it; you havent.

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe shes got more insight on these particular topics than you?

I don't understand why you can't read her statements and comprehend what actually occurred.

"My former boss paid me 20k less than what he paid the person who had my job previously.

I'd argue that I'm a classic example of the income discrepancy."

If she felt the initial job offer wasn't fair based on her experience and knowledge, she shouldn't have taken the job. She acknowledged the other woman had more knowledge and experience with her statement "I had the education and title but I didn't have the exact experience because they worked together for so many years and she knew things I didn't know"

The cherry on top was her mentioning he was Pakistani. Why is his race important unless she believes that Pakistanis are somehow biased against blacks (which then makes her statement kind of racist). But we already know from her previous statement that blacks can't be racist. Silly me...........

Maybe it was simply my flaws. Okay. I was just noting that it seems easy to underpay black workers.

I didn't even know he was from Pakistan until many years later. I thought he was Indian. My most radical, woke, non-racist, pro-feminist friend I've have is from Pakistan.

I am judging him based on my experience not stereotypes. He's very American, former military in fact. He's not racist because he hired me, promoted me and kept me for years. But he wasn't fair. He was biased for whatever reason. Maybe it was simply my flaws. Okay. I was just noting that it seems easy to underpay black workers.

Maybe you weren't underpaid but rather the other woman was 'providing' something you didn't? And I mean that in every sense of the word.

What's up with using the term 'woke'? From your perspective, what does that mean?

Peenie, I only asked the question to find out if there was justification for the compensation difference. We hired a purchasing person about 1 year ago. New person makes $40k less than the prior purchasing person. Prior worked for the company for 40 years. Was probably overpaid. New had no experience. Fresh out of college.

Personal example - I received an offer from a company a few years ago. Had no experience in private at that time. Now that I have experience with another company, the same company has appeoached me with an offer twice the original. Granted, its for a higher level position, but the point is that experience can have a huge impact on comp.

Hopefully thats all it was for you. Glad to hear youre doing well now and seem to be happy. 🍻

Woke means like understanding things that may not be obvious. Sometimes unlearning what you've been taught when it conflicts with the truth of matters. Just being culturally aware and intellectually open. Well, that's what it means to me.

She was Michael Jordan and I was Scottie Pippen. I don't watch basketball but I think it might be a good comparison. She was good but I helped make her better and without me they wouldn't have been great.

Well chit, I wouldnt be too worried about making $19,980,000 compared to her $20,000,000 then. 😜

I guess you never heard the story about the guy who learned how to steal and learned how to fight in the ghetto

Then one night in desperation

The young man breaks away

He buys a gun, he steals a car

He tries to run, but he don't get far

And his mama cries

As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man

Face down on the street with a gun in his hand

In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

Black people are like pepper on mashed potatoes. Just the right amount looks nice, adds flavor. Dump the whole pepper shaker on the potatoes and they are ruined.

Are you saying white people are like mashed potatoes? What are we too bland for you? Do you want to peel our skin off and then mash us all up? Or are you saying the "Pepper" should do it? Just the right amount of them. Not too many so raise suspicion. You monster!

This is a great post! :first:

Reflects my feelings and thoughts perfectly.

Also, working for an a##hole (haven't we all at some point) actually makes you a better, stronger person. I worked under a MAJOR a##hole for two years. I look back on those years as the catalyst that helped make me who I am today. So in a way, I wouldn't change it for the world even though it was the worst two years of my life.

Agreed.

The worst boss in my life taught me to CYA no matter what and the importance of documentation. As I was leaving that job (circa 1996) I rolled a hand grenade into his world then walked out. Big HR investigation that muted his career quite a bit.

What I never understood about black people is their willingness to stay in the ghetto. Atlanta, Detroit,Baltimore,Chicago. You could not pay me a salary to live in these places. Like if you said here's 50k I would never take my son to these places. Ever.

If they are poor, then how do they move? Where would they go? I think it's a lot easier said than done.

Didnt you see the Diff'rent Strokes episode where Willis' friends come visit him at Mr Drummonds place? They told Willis and Arnold were losing their blackness by assimilating to mainstream society. Thats quite the insult for blacks. I guess it comes from the days of slavery where all they had to cling onto was their culture. Ive been told by many blacks that detaching from the black culture is a huge no no.

I work with numerous guys who grew up in the projects. Most were teens during the mid 90s crack epidemic when the projects were having shootings everyday. Some cant detach themselves and have been fired for running with gangs etc. One if the most successful cut all ghetto ties and never goes back now that he moved his mom outta the hood too. He makes about 80k between 2 jobs now. He says hes never allowed back since hes cut ties.

This is America. Everyone in it has the opportunity to achieve mediocrity with minimal effort. You see it everyday, everywhere, from every type of person.

But if you have no money, how far can you go? I get that they have do SOMETHING to improve their position, but simply saying "Why don't you move?" seems a bit simplistic.

It is simple. Get a job and don't spend all your money on junk. Easy enough. Now go get em!

We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things (accomplishments and aspirations), not because they are easy, but because they are hard - JFK

This is an America most of us never knew.
