How much is "too much" to pay for a steak

Recommended Posts

Depends on the quality of the restaurant. At a good steak house a $100 a head for dinner is normal. I probably wouldn't pay $200 but thats just due to the law of diminishing returns.

I don't only look like a jew.

when it comes to eating out, I'd never pay more than 25 for anything

I will order a 200 dollar steak someday, but not this year.

40-50 dollars once every few years is acceptable for a meal.

Lol you guys would pay over 25-30 for a steak? Insanity. I could serve you a sizzlers steak at a fancy place and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Whatever they cost at outback is the most I’d pay.

There's a place I'm going to for mine and my wife's anniversary tonight that has A5 Japanese wagyu steaks. The marbling on them looks AMAZING. It's $125 for 9oz of it though. Won't be getting it tonight cause it's a NY strip. If it was a ribeye I prob would end up getting it.

Shouldn't it be called a Tokyo Strip?

No. Taint has rarely "hit" in food threads.

Edit: that being said, steakhouse pricing is one the worst food values out there.

Not only am I not trolling but I could also serve you a bottle of Trader Joes 3$ wine in an expensive bottle and you would commend me on the fine quality.

Also Bier says I dont hit then makes my point for me. Win.

Yea, around $65 would be my limit, and it better come with a big-assed baked potato and some fresh veggies.

Of course it isn't a good value.

But to say a great steak at a real steakhouse is no different than a focking sizzler or outback steak... that's just ignorant

There is a difference in how we come the same conclusion. Steakhouses actually bring in higher quality meat and often place a high priority on how they treat it (wet and dry aging), and have a huge disparity inhow they invest in labor to ensure proper technique. Steaks from sizzler and outback are not going to match a Peter Luger or Smith & wolinsky. While terribly inflated, I am sometimes in a position to go to one of them. Never a bad meal.

While you seem to believe that they are interchangeable (along with wine choices), people with moderate food knowledge do know the difference. In advance, spare me the gotcha blind tastings that only reflect the researcher's confirmation bias.

It’s better, just not what I would pay in comparison to the diminishing returns of taste and enjoyment. I would enjoy it a little more and pay a lot more.

I can’t spare you from those because placebo is so relevant in our food. At a fancy place you are more likely to praise the superb quality of meat and wine due to the ambiance and price. Even if it’s just me swapping your meal for outback and two buck chuck wine. Our brains can’t help it. The quality to price does not scale well. So I won’t pay 100 for a steak that’s marginally better (more butter is all they are doing different) than a decent cut at outback.

You're out of your mind if you think you could pass off sizzler steak as Morton's, Del Frisco's or any of the other top notch steak houses around the country.

Some of their prices are definitely outlandish, but sizzler isn't even in the same stratosphere as a high quality aged steak.

Here is the steak on talking about. This is one of their A5 Japanese wagyu steaks (uncut of course). Trust me, you'll be able to tell the difference in the meat. The marbling on this thing makes it obvious

how sexy is it to publish research which reinforces that high grade beef is better than lower grade beef? it's much more fun to pull up a study where smirnoff beats stoli. our brains can't help it. some people want to prove their bias and will ignore objective criteria to do so.

Well that's just a matter of taste.

I'm not getting a $70 steak every time I eat out but every now and then I consider it a worthwhile treat.

I agree completely with this statement and the placebo affect.

Wait, we are talking about the 200 dollar moto 5g verse the new iphone, correct?

Either way the statement holds true.

Well to be honest, I’m basing this on their new Mac n cheese which is the bomb. For that alone I’ll take the 15$ steak special over a 70$ fancy meal.

I'd be dumpster diving long before I'd pay that amount.
